Former Partners with better jobs: what is one time you realized Starbucks really messed you up? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by roseshrub
**Throwing this one into this subreddit as well because I genuinely want to hear your stories**

I’ll start: I work in a café now, Café/Restaurant I should say, and on my first day when it was about my lunchtime I clocked out before ordering food and beverage. When my food was about ready and I picked up my order: the owner of the restaurant approached me and apologizes profusely to me.
I had no idea what on earth he was talking about at first, and didn’t really know what to say, until he explains that employees clock out after they receive their free food because it takes time out of their earned lunch periods to wait for it.

And from here the conversation goes:

Me: “Wait, that’s a thing here??”

*O*: “Of course it is! Wasn’t that a thing at your last job?!”

Me: “At my last job we clocked out before we marked out food and beverages.”

*O*:”WHAT?!”

Me: “Yeah, it’s so that partners get their lunches on time to avoid a violation.”

*O*: “but that makes no sense! what is the point of a lunch if most of it is spent waiting for your food and drink?!”

Me: 🤷🏾‍♀️

*O*: “Nonono, we don’t do that here.”

welp, I got coached for being sick and having to call out, even though I followed protocol from the Starbucks guidelines page- and my manager tried to give me a corrective action form and tried to gaslight me by saying “oh this isn’t a corrective action form” when the paper literally said “corrective action” up on-top

I quit and feel respected and appreciated at new job 👏🏼
roseshrub [OP] 20 points 1y ago
I’ve gone through the same thing!
Technically, it’s not even YOUR responsibility to get your shift covered in an emergency. They just say that to take the work off their shoulders and they can use it against you if you couldn’t find any coverage.
When my manager came for me for a call out, despite having a perfect attendance record and never calling out except for the **one time I needed to** she insinuated writing me up and I challenged her to because I was going to take her to upper management and she ended up backing down.

That was actually the last straw amongst many other reasons why I left.

I’m so glad to hear you’re being treated with respect at your new job. May you never have to deal with that kind of lunacy again 💚
CommitteeJazzlike185 16 points 1y ago
I refused to sign the write up. I even reported her- She was not happy about that and gave me a cold shoulder. Glad we both stood up for ourselves! We deserve so much better ♥️
roseshrub [OP] 11 points 1y ago
That’s some serious queen energy, friend. Glad to find us on better ground 🥰
OkFunny9774 1 points 1y ago
Okay but yes. Why do so many managers do this at Starbucks? I called off for an emergency with my child because I had to stay overnight at the hospital and months later I called off one week because of my child was sick and the next because I was sick and she straight up told me there’s an issue with my attendance it’s my responsibility to find a cover even if I use my sick days and then proceeded to take away my hours TO THIS DAY when this was months ago 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
roseshrub [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Starbucks managers are a different breed of human, I swear 🤦🏾‍♀️
Loose_Bumblebee 25 points 1y ago
omg i had no idea we were supposed to clock out before marking out stuff to eat/drink for breaks, ive been here a month and i always clock out when i sit down and have everything with me lol
shxtfxced -20 points 1y ago
that messes with the timing of the rest of the partners getting breaks. it sucks but thats the way it is :/ especially if youre the first to get one, you gotta clock out or start your ten whenever they tell you to, then get your stuff, or else it pushes breaks back
edit : im not saying its right. i hate it. at my store we’re allowed to make our own drinks/food on our breaks so there isnt much wait, idk about other stores. its the way we do breaks though, so downvote me ig?
thefoolwitch 26 points 1y ago
“That’s the way it is” isn’t good reasoning, though…… like, do you realize that they shouldn’t be doing it this way in the first place? It only hurts other partners because they’ve *chosen* to make it hurt other partners. This is something we can change.
roseshrub [OP] 12 points 1y ago
I wholeheartedly agree. that line of reasoning is used so commonly we unconsciously justify toxic behaviors and actions.

Besides, it’s the poor time management on the leads behalf that also hurts the partners breaks and lunches. I can’t tell you how many times they’ve had me work a near 5 hours straight before the very last moment where they’ll rush me to clock out for a lunch.
For me, who’s exhausted, irritable and hungry by the time I get it, that’s horrible, and sometimes it’s a mental battle to decide between actually getting my full lunch but I mark nothing out so I can sit down and relax, or I do mark out and cut down my lunch just to eat.
persona-2 2 points 1y ago
I haven’t always been in the food industry. Everywhere else you clock out and go on break. If you brought food, are buying food, aren’t eating, whatever, it’s up to you and done on your time. It’s nice we get free food, but odd we think we should get longer breaks because we get free food. I do like the put your order in a couple minutes before your break.
cookiemonstah87 6 points 1y ago
I prefer my breaks happening later, anyway. Haha

Really though, this is the first job I've ever had where we get 10s, not 15s, and the first job I've had where breaks are supposed to start the second we're told, not when we get off the floor. Sometimes it takes the whole 10 minutes just to get food/drink if our breaks happen during peak. This is also the most physically exhausting job I've had, and I've worked in warehouses.

As for going right when we're told, that's not always possible, especially if we're slammed.

Someone else mentioned this, but if Starbucks doesn't want one partner's break being late to push everyone else's breaks back, they could be less stingy with hours. One extra person on the floor per day would solve that.
canidieyet_ 2 points 1y ago
tbf this is the first job where i’ve gotten a 10, so i’m grateful for it regardless
roseshrub [OP] 1 points 1y ago
E-xac-tly 👏🏾
shxtfxced -1 points 1y ago
im not saying its right, i hate it, ive just seen people get in trouble for not going before getting their drinks/food. at my store they let us make it ourselves idk about other stores tho
roseshrub [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Yeah, you’re right to say each store is different, because it’s true. But some are worst off than others.

thankfully, your a lucky one in that regard and they’re doing you good for that.
Loose_Bumblebee 1 points 1y ago
i’m usually like 2nd to last to go on break but easily having an extra person on the floor could solve this. it’s stupid that they think people want to spend half their break getting food or drinks. and half the time you cant even use the bar if they’re making drinks for customers bc you’ll just be in the way. i have another job at a smaller business and sometimes we wouldn’t even be able to go on break until almost the end of the day, but we were still guaranteed having a full break regardless of picking up lunch for co workers
Electrical_Metal_106 22 points 1y ago
I usually give my team a five minute warning before their break so they can put their order in-especially if they only get a 10 and I know they are trying to eat. It is hard when people don’t start their break when I expect them to. It throws off every one else’s break. It’s a fine balance.
roseshrub [OP] 6 points 1y ago
I thank you on behalf of your team
You’re doing right for that. 💚
canidieyet_ 3 points 1y ago
i WISH my shifts would give me a 5 minute heads up. but i don’t think even that would work bc “hey your ten will be in 5 minutes” is translation for “your ten will be in 20 minutes”…so then i’d have a cold sandwich lol
Electrical_Metal_106 1 points 1y ago
It be like that sometimes 🤣 I try my best to make it work though.
Avuneon 17 points 1y ago
Recently a client was laying into me with complaints and issues that had nothing to do with me, and I just calmly dealt with it. Coworkers came up to me afterwards asking if I was okay, and I responded, "Yeah, that was nothing compared to the daily abuse from customers at Starbucks."
roseshrub [OP] 9 points 1y ago
And having to take it along with your managers scrutiny about the interaction afterwards.
Avuneon 7 points 1y ago
Yeah... At my new job, if someone uses slurs at us, they get fired as a client. Starbucks, we would just have to take it.
menthol-drops 16 points 1y ago
When i didn’t have to grovel for a day off for a medical appointment, and instead got immediate approval of my request. Oh and also when i realized in can just. Get up from my spot and go to the restroom
roseshrub [OP] 5 points 1y ago
It’s mind blowing, isn’t it?
Imagine having to beg for an opportunity to check on your health.
menthol-drops 7 points 1y ago
Absolutely wild. Mind you this was an appointment I’d had made since last year since it was a surgery follow-up, and before i switched jobs i was trying to figure out how to stack everything. Nobody should feel like they have to compromise between health and work
roseshrub [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Louder for the back, brother 👏🏾 health is wealth.
BluejayHefty202 14 points 1y ago
When a truck leaked diesel in our drive and the smell was so bad it was making me sick. As the ssv I called corporate who told us to get out of the building stop taking orders and call 911 while they called hazmat. My SM cancelled hazmat because she said it was too expensive and had the other employees clean it up with floor cleaner and reopen the store. I ended up with plurisy because of it. I left instead of cleaning and ended up in the emergency room the next day not being able to breathe
roseshrub [OP] 14 points 1y ago
**OH MY GOD.** What a psychopath! That’s grounds for a lawsuit! *ESPECALLY* when you were instructed by corporate to stop what you were doing and get out of there.
Did anyone suggest rallying up to sue your SM? Did your DM do anything about this??
muthafackin_g_420 10 points 1y ago
TW/CT: depression/self harm

i was working six day weeks, 40 hours a week, busted my ass for my store, i was constantly bullied by another shift supervisor and sexually harassed by my manager, which led to really bad depression and i ended up self harming really bad at work. then they FIRED ME two months later after literally winning POQ. i reported everything to ethics and they didn’t do much. this company is gross and doesn’t treat their employees with any care or respect. especially the DM’s but that’s just my opinion. extreme story i know, but them firing me was a blessing in disguise because now i have a really good job with people who are nice and actually respect and care about me

edit: typo
roseshrub [OP] 7 points 1y ago
**That’s absolutely disgusting!** I’m so sorry to hear about this.
You had every right and reason to take legal action against the company and those involved.
There’s a special place in a pit for bastard scum like them. It sickening of them to take advantage of you like this.

I hope you’re doing better now 💚
guavalemonades 9 points 1y ago
I work full time in an office now. I had to take my cat to the vet to be euthanized today and because she's been so sick I've been in late a few times. I apologized profusely to my boss for missing so much work and he told me thanks for keeping the office in my thoughts but that I didn't need to apologize, just take whatever time I need.

I could barely call in sick at my Starbucks store and they paid me half what I make now. I had to start telling them that I was throwing up any time I needed to be off on short notice or they'd act like I was personally ruining everything by having human needs (and make no mistake, they still did, just behind my back).

Start job hunting, babes. It gets better.
roseshrub [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Seriously, they act like the fucking world ended because you’re a human being with needs and an actual life that doesn’t revolve around a corporation that treats us like disposable numbers. Oh, the travesty! What a bunch of clowns.

So happy to find you out of that crap.
We deserve so much better, friend.
Also, I’m so sorry to hear about your child. May she Rest In Peace 🥺💚

roseshrub [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Let me start off by saying your boss sounds absolutely amazing and I hope he’s getting nothing but the best of life because he deserves that. ✨

It’s almost shocking when you find your honor actually being defended by your superiors after being so accustomed to taking all the abuse and harassment from customers along with the added scrutiny and belittlement from managers for doing absolutely nothing in the first place.

There are only two managers I can honestly say who carried this beauty about them when I covered their stores and had they not worked so far I would certainly have stayed with the company and laid out all my life for those two because they were true examples of managers who cared about their partners and protected them like they were their own children.

I’m so glad you’re in such a healthy environment where you’re protected and treated with the respect you deserve. 💚

Edit: Your SM did **what**⁉️ Did you throw the bastard in response? because I would’ve.
Strange-Ad421 7 points 1y ago
we dont have to start our breaks until we get our food and drink BUT that’s store to store and whatever the manager decides on THE THING THAT MESSED ME UP THE MOST SO FAR WHILE INTERVIEWING FOR OTHER POSITIONS IS ive been asked “what’s a time you faced an ethical dilemma between yourself and a supervisor and how did you resolve it” ONLY STORIES I COULD THINK OF WHERE STARBUCKS
roseshrub [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Yeah, my former manager wouldn’t allow us to get our food/drink beforehand but she would make the exception for her favorites. Each store is different though.

I can’t imagine being able to answer that question if I were in your shoes considering you could easily be accused of insubordination depending on how power tripped your SSVs and manager are. But that also depends on the kind of store you’re in as well.
TylerJ716 7 points 1y ago
Getting only a 10 minutes break instead of a 15 minute one as compared to literally every other job in the past. And every manager is different with when you're supposed to get your food for that
roseshrub [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Most certainly.

Yeah, you have to be lucky enough to have a manager who’s alright with you getting your foods first.
Each store runs differently.
Internal-Ad-8820 6 points 1y ago
When I found out that, despite being keyholders and the ones in charge most of the time, shift supervisors only have as much or as little authority as upper management allows them on any given day. And God forbid you should make a decision without their approval even when that decision is related to the health and stability of the store
roseshrub [OP] 3 points 1y ago
That is exactly why I never promoted.
Internal-Ad-8820 1 points 1y ago
My first mistake lol, but I was really desperate for management experience at the time, and Starbucks was the available stepping stone 😣
roseshrub [OP] 2 points 1y ago
It be like that man.
I had been considered to promote a number a times before but it’s seriously not worth it.
Internal-Ad-8820 1 points 1y ago
It's definitely awesome you were able to see that and be like nOPE LOL, but I will say that even though I wasn't shift for a super long time, it did give me enough experience to be able to find another job as a supervisor so that I wouldn't go backwards in my goals. That was the one thing Starbucks did for me LOL
Sisyphus291 5 points 1y ago
When I wanted to be a trainer and got constantly picked over for cute young bubbly girls. Was at a time I took a chance on a major career change to get another degree and was only available for nights work. Mid-age male, previous teacher with years of experience, now with a company where I’m a preferred trainer with safety critical challenges. Making x10 more too.

I sometimes met my old manager and coworkers passing by my old store. I like to remind the manager that she deemed me not able to teach making coffee. Silliness.
roseshrub [OP] 2 points 1y ago
It’s heartwarming to hear you’re in such a better position now 💚
Appearances and age should not be contributing factors in your eligibility to train others. It’s superficial and absolutely unprofessional on your old SM’s behalf.
Shame on them.

You go, king 👏🏾
Unlikely_Ad2324 4 points 1y ago
I work in a family local coffee shop. I used to try to be fast and make drinks out in less than a minute and my bosses would wonder why I’m rushing. When you work or go to a smaller more traditional/authentic coffee shop, it takes about 2-3 minutes to make one latte. My bosses would always reassure me that I should take my time. “This isn’t starbucks, don’t stress about time. It’s about the quality of the latte” as they would say. Customers would be patient anyway and it always made me feel better. Everyday I go to work, during rushes I would always tell myself “don’t stress, take your time, they’ll wait.”

Another thing is, when I worked at starbucks I would always get written up for not connecting with every single customer. Here at our cafe, while we do love having conversations with our customers, not all of them like to converse with you. They’re just there for their coffee and leave, but they always come back the next day. I just love and appreciate that I can work a good balance in the cafe that I work in now and not having starbucks down my throat about making drinks in 30 seconds and connecting with every customer.
roseshrub [OP] 4 points 1y ago
They really want to have their cake and eat it too, don’t they?
I haven’t met ANYONE who has been able to successfully connect quick enough while handing out a beverage without it being surface level.
And they seriously expected us to have “life changing connections” with people.
Bafoonery!

I love that I can actually have a conversation with someone without being reprimanded for taking too long. And the understanding that I don’t NEED to for myself on someone connect with them if they don’t wish to connect has made my life much more peaceful.

Glad to know you’re in a better place now 💚 I love local coffee joints.
Gemma_V 4 points 1y ago
I got written up for being late; despite telling my shift, manager and assistant manager I would be late- and trying to find coverage for that time - but i was 30 minutes away when my new job ended at the time my starbucks shift started
roseshrub [OP] 2 points 1y ago
That’s just unfair.
Shame on your leads.
Sdee1234 3 points 1y ago
I rage quit a few weeks back. The sheer weight that lifted off my shoulders when i turned in my 2 weeks is telling. Im still in the group chat and literally 6 people left within a month. Its falling apart dude. And the fact that i laughed when i read that is also telling of how awful that job made me feel. An interviewer asked why i left and was appalled at some of the things starbucks is doing to us. Refreshing for someone to actually be shocked by it rather than talk to partners who are all numb to it by now
roseshrub [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Dude that’s literally my new job too!
My supervisors jaw dropped at the things I told her and expressed serious concern about my mental health from how casually I said everything.
It was crazy.
happyzeb 3 points 1y ago
at a new job, i was given leave when a loved one died and was not questioned about every part of the ceremony to be sure i wasn't lying about it (at sbux, i had only called out once before this for being in the hospital)
roseshrub [OP] 3 points 1y ago
The fact that they questioned you in the first place during such a vulnerable time is a crime.
You deserve better, friend. Glad you found a place that treats you right 💚
FalconGENE 3 points 1y ago
I just recently resigned and I feel so much better not working for the Foods Industry anymore. My first and only Starbucks store that I worked at was nothing but a bunch of people gossiping about fellow partners. Absolute extreme was that they constantly rat everything out to the SM just to earn favoritism points.

So glad I left because the hours were not stable, felt like an expendable and was bullied because I was a green bean who cannot remember the drinks and wasn't even allowed to use the iPad to learn the drinks post-training.

My barista trainer tried her hardest and did a great job training me but urgh! This ONE SSV was so annoying and prepared a deck of drinks on us cards because she anticipated me screwing up. What did I do? I straight up resigned the moment I landed my current job as a Swiss Watch Specialist at a Luxury Jewelry Shop. Trust me on this but, I feel so much better working in that environment much more because I have passion for it and so does my clients.
roseshrub [OP] 4 points 1y ago
As a former barista trainer myself, this seriously pisses me off.
I never understood how tenured partners developed this sink-or-swim mentality when we’re supposed to be working as a team to uplift one another and treat new partners with patience and guidance, especially cause you guys are the ones who need it most.
There is literally no justification for that toxic shit.

I held myself to ensuring my baby beans felt safe to ask questions and left room for mistakes because I always told them that mistakes are part of the process and to never panic if a mistake was made.
And lord help anyone who tried me on my teaching.
All of them have become powerful brewed beans and I’m so proud of them.

Also, I loathed the gossiping.
The amount of drama that exists in Starbucks is ridiculous.
Why can’t these people just do their jobs and mind their own matters?
It’s just coffee. A life can’t be that boring for one to live off talking about others in such a nasty way.
Go touch grass or something.

Starbucks managers, I swear, are a whole different species 🤦🏾‍♀️

I’m so sorry you went through that, friend.
I’m glad you’re in a better place now 💚
ShaggysCumrag 2 points 1y ago
the milk pitchers destroyed my right wrist/thumb.
roseshrub [OP] 1 points 1y ago
How did that happen??!
ShaggysCumrag 1 points 1y ago
being rushed on drive thru bar and not thinking about how my body is moving. so my entire right side was basically doing all the work and it got to a point where i couldn’t bend or move my thumb for like 5 days
roseshrub [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Oh my god dude! I’m so sorry! How’s your hand now?
ShaggysCumrag 2 points 1y ago
i meann it works now but i never went to a dr. bc america + healthcare ≠ cheap
Nalytia 1 points 1y ago
I just started work at this new office building and anytime I have to call out because of health related issues (I'm still suffering from Long Covid as one of the first contractors of it pre vaccine periods), my boss is extrely understanding and once even told me to take more time to recover if I need it. I didn't even have to explicitly deeply explain what was wrong with me to be allowed to do so. He even mentioned something about being alright with mental health days.

Shocking contrast to missing a shift at Starbucks and the manager cutting your hours as a result, or trying to change availability to line up with the new job and having the manager wordlessly no explanation cancel the change request not once but TWICE??? I'm sorry ma'am but this job pays better and if I'm scheduled a shift overlapping with it because you refused my availability change I'm putting that shit up immediately 🤣
roseshrub [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Again, Starbucks managers are *a whole different species*.

What is it with them taking call outs so damn personally? My former SM went for my throat about the one callout I NEEDED to have and insinuated writing me up.

I was ready to bring the entire judicial system on her and challenged her to do it but she ended up backing down.
Guess she didn’t think I was going to.

*she really thought I was intimidated by her or something*
Hmph, biiitch.
Thee_Lizard_Head -11 points 1y ago
To argue that most people who take their lunch breaks at other jobs definitely have to wait on their break for their food. You work in an office? You clock out and then go get your food and wait for it. Not sure why thats so controversial. I just oder my stuff and enjoy my break, and halfway through go walk to pick it up. No point in waiting around wasting my break when I know I can just come pick it up part way through.
uwumoment 7 points 1y ago
do not compare an office job to a job where you’re constantly running around and standing
Thee_Lizard_Head -2 points 1y ago
I used a random example and never even said the jobs are the same. Basically any job makes you do this. You are deciding to eat something that needs to be personally prepared for you.

Using company time for yourself is not what it's supposed to be used for. Every service job I've ever worked has had me clock out to then enjoy my food and drink. If someone is so angry by this then bring in your own food from home.
