Are all trainers like this?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by sleepystarr347
This is my first day working and my trainer is kind of harsh. She was going over the ice chest and warned my to hold it cause it would hit my head and I was getting ice and she was clearly holding it while I was getting it and she dropped it and it hit me on the head and she said “remember to hold it so it doesn’t do that” 😭
pranasoup102 points1y ago
wow, i’m so sorry. that is not okay. please let your manager know or call PCC.
sleepystarr347 [OP]34 points1y ago
I don’t know if It was on accident or not tho. I don’t want to make a big deal cause she was right😭 it’s just now my head hurts and my lesson is learned. She said we’re gonna make a bad espresso and I’m going to try it with her so I know what not to make, wish me luck.
pranasoup47 points1y ago
the espresso thing is real- the ice bin is not. maybe it’s worth mentioning to her?
FearlessSentence966726 points1y ago
if it was an accident she should have apologized or given any indicator that it was. so even if it was an accident she went about it completely the wrong way.
Comfortable-Plane94421 points1y ago
Yes please let your manager know or pcc. seriously that’s not okay
Dzfranken13 points1y ago
Goodness gracious do not call PCC before you talk to the person that it happened with and/or talk to a supervisor and/or your manager. Nothing like jumping over 4 ducks to talk to the goose.
Kambina_Smoke47 points1y ago
Saying "remember to hold it" and telling you what to do afterwards like it was your fault or something after you got a fucking injury
I would have lost my job
Responsible_Snow710920 points1y ago
Well OP said that the trainer was clearly holding it while OP was grabbing the ice and then the flap door hits OP in the head and the trainer says "u need to make sure u hold it so that doesnt happen"...so it seems like the trainer purposely did it
Kambina_Smoke6 points1y ago
We are in agreement
Responsible_Snow71093 points1y ago
Yea i too would have probably lost my job lol just cuz its so blatant that the trainer purposely dropped the ice bin flap door purposely just to show what would happen as if OP cant already tell just by the trainer stating it. It makes me mad that people think its ok to act like that especially with new people that are training

It sounds bad but I might. The managers sweet and the job doesn’t seem that hard but I struggle with sensory issues and I think she knew that cause kept being extra with the airate and grinder. She’s really hot and cold. I have an interview for another job and if they accept I might either do both or just quit 😭 she has the same shifts as me so I’m always gonna see her. The other coworkers were nice enough tho it’s hard to decide
sleepystarr347 [OP]8 points1y ago
Also she kept getting pissy with me that I understood most of the stuff and trying to make me nervous or making me mess up like with steaming milk she told me we were doing a grande cup but then when I made she told me I made too much and it was supposed to be a tall. I’m her first trainee and I think she’s on a powertrip or somthing lol

Some people have issues where they have to be correct, esp. in an authoritative position, otherwise they feel incompetent. Hence they changing sizes to be the correct one. They should’ve be a guiding or leading anyone if they can’t be responsible for their actions and be empathetic to a new trainee.
I’m sorry this is your experience. Talk to your SM about her for sure. You do have the right to ask for a new trainer. If you do accept the other job offer, please talk to your SM if you decide to quit for the next trainees.
Kambina_Smoke4 points1y ago
Excuse me that is textbook bullying

Doesn’t matter. Right, wrong, meant to or not. Any injury has to be reported as it can mean your covered under workers comp or not. Esp. any head bumps as even a mild thump can be a mild concussion. If you feel it anything after a minute or two, it’s because of an inflammatory response.
Tbh, it sounds intentional and these kind of people were raised with that same kinda of “examples.” Please let your manager or PCC know and file an incident report on the store iPad within 48hrs. If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for the next dozen baristas who’ll be treated as such.
If that’s okay, then what’s next? Nothing is more important than your health and safety.
roovols7 points1y ago
Somewhat similar experience. Except during training it was fine, and then afterwards she got very clearly irritated at my mistakes. Saying stuff like “What are we doing?“ as I was very clearly making a drink, but was doing it the wrong way. Felt like shit after those shifts.
board-certified4 points1y ago
your trainer sucks ass…. otherwise sneak in some velcro for the ice bin and make it seem like it appeared out of nowhere and everyone will be so happy
here_forthefun4 points1y ago
Definitely would report it to the manager
Vivid-Cheetah-76933 points1y ago
……am i the only one who thought this was funny… like this is something my coworkers would do to me and we’d laugh about it🧍♀️
sleepystarr347 [OP]2 points1y ago
I get that but we just met less than an hour ago 🧍🏻♀️
Vivid-Cheetah-76931 points1y ago
did she like, laugh after? or was it malicious? cause if it’s the latter then yeah talk to your manager but if she was just trying to joke around and you’re not concussed then i personally wouldn’t be upset
sleepystarr347 [OP]1 points1y ago
She was smirking so maybe she was joking? But that still hurt and she started to laughingly ask if I was okay after she saw I was trying to hold back tears cause man it hurt
Vivid-Cheetah-76931 points1y ago
they hurt so bad. i let it fall on my head once when i was rushing to get ice, haven’t forgotten since. i’m guessing she was just trying to be funny, which, hurting someone on their first day of work isn’t REALLY funny, but it’s your call if you wanna tell your manager or whatever
sleepystarr347 [OP]1 points1y ago
And then after that she reminded me to hold it
uwumoment3 points1y ago
omg nooo i would never let it fall on a trainee
SeparateAd34732 points1y ago
No that’s not normal I would have been mortified if I did that! I also don’t trail around partners to watch them get ice because they don’t need my help/ guidance there. A good trainer/leader knows how to guide someone and teach them without violent incidents to connect the pain to the lesson.
_circuts2 points1y ago
I literally got a concussion from that. Your trainer sucks. Send that one back and get a new one.
Druid_of_Twilight2 points1y ago
I'm sorry that's so funny I would just laugh
Business_Custard70562 points1y ago
Uuuuh no. Trainers should NOT do that. I would be pissed 😂
vinylcollector242 points1y ago
i promise you that this is not okay and not all trainers are like this!! please tell your manager so this doesn’t happen again. i’m so sorry!
cookiemonstah872 points1y ago
It sounds like she knew you weren't holding it and either expected you to grab it before she let go without actually telling you that's what she meant, or wanted you to learn the hard way. Either way, that's definitely not ok! Head injuries can be really serious!
Canadiansbux2 points1y ago
No that is not the norm.
Necessary_Low9392 points1y ago
… wtf lol she’s horrible
Zealousideal-Star4482 points1y ago
Yikes yea talk to your manager about it
modest_champagne1 points1y ago
Head injuries are not a joke at all. And if anything, imagine if that was your hand. Idk about talking to that shift, I’d say talk to your manager
Elliotisnotokay1 points1y ago
In your two weeks notice make sure to mention it. You won't have to deal with her after anyway. By not saying anything it'll happen to someone else. It doesn't matter the trainers intentions, how it felt to you is more important. Especially if you're leaving anyway
Assiqtaq1 points1y ago
No, that is clearly wrong and borderline abusive. This is not okay.
realnewtgeiszler1 points1y ago
That's actually insane and she needs to be written up for that fr, she could have hurt you doing that bc those fucking things come down HARD
Kryrieonn1 points1y ago
Not going to lie I've had that ice door drop on my head more than I can admit. It hurts so much when youre rushing during peak to get ice.
Lost_Treat_62960 points1y ago
Not all trainers. But some people teach in very unconventional ways.
Don't report something that small as getting bonked on the head tho, especially because you're new. You gotta get used to getting roughed around a little bit, otherwise you ain't gonna survive. If you're considering quitting over the ice bin falling on u, then just do it. I promise u that worse things will happen in every job you have then an ice bin falling on your head.
going to your SM or DM over them not holding an ice bin lid is something that will make u seem oversensitive and unable to handle the job. Unless u got hurt, it's not worth bothering for something that happened once.
sleepystarr347 [OP]1 points1y ago
That’s what I was thinking. It did leave a bump on my head tho and I’ve been having headaches two days after the fact
Lost_Treat_62960 points1y ago
If you're hurt, file a report on the iPad and go to the hospital.
