Okay so I’ve worked in restaurants my whole life[ive done EVERY single position of a kitchen besides manager] I had a kid so I decided to take it easier and move on to Starbucks as I’ve heard they’re more flexible with scheduling etc (which that was a PAIN to go through with). So my point is is that I’ve been around sanitizer buckets for years. I started work at Starbucks and started noticing my skin becoming very itchy and bumps EVERYWHERE. It’s been 5 months and they still haven’t gone away and the more I use the sani water the more my skin itches hours later. My coworkers are always saying that we need to wipe the counters down with water after using the sani buckets which I think is ridiculous considering the main point of using the sanitizer solution is to be able to quickly clean off your hands and counters and it’s safe for food environment. I’ve seen other posts where people have dealt with the same skin issues with the sani buckets at Starbucks. Is this something we can bring to cooperate (if they even care about us🙄) because I’m sick of being embarrassed of my arms now that the weathers getting nicer and I don’t know what to do anymore

Have you used the test strips to check concentration? Maybe yours is off.

the sani has to be at a certain concentration in order to sanitize properly. it sucks but it’s standard. it’s the same chemicals used in restaurants all around the country, not just the bux. I would invest in a good lotion and wash your hands more, as well as make sure the sani isn’t hot. it should be cool or at most lukewarm

I’ve never worked at a place that uses this brand / so I wonder if it’s that company in general. Maybe I’ll look into it more when I check what the label is at my store. I’ve been around many different brands - I used to clean at a restaurant for a side job and never got this type of breakout. There’s definitely something up with it I’ve used eczema lotion, regular, hypoallergenic soap & lotion. I’m legit going to make a doctors appointment over this

if its ecolab, like my store was, then it’s a brand used by most restaurants. panera, sbux, chipotle, etc.

Make sure you aren’t using hot Sanitizer and also you should be strip testing every bucket of sanitizer you fill, it should test at a ph of about 100
Edit: DEFINITELY DO NOT CLEAN SANI OFF COUNTER WITH WATER the whole point of sanitizer is it dries faster than water and after drying is food safe so washing it away with water just dirties your counter and makes it covered in unnecessary moisture.

This. Why sanitize if you have to still wipe with water? OP It sounds like your coworkers might need to be retrained as far as sanitizing solution goes. :/

That’s what I thought, I’m still ‘new’ at Starbucks so I wasn’t sure if it was just something that was a thing at Starbucks or what

It sounds like the concentration is too much. Definitely use the ph strips and if the concentration is fine (temp will affect the concentration also, it should be tepid) then perhaps you are allergic :(

i’ve heard some of my shifts say that if it’s too warm it’ll tear your skin up, no idea if that’s actually accurate but 🤷 i notice irritation from it some days but not all the time
