the story of the time i got to yell back at a customer (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Dance_partyzone
So i’m finally quitting starbucks after three years off looking for a better job, (AT LONG LAST) and i thought i would share one of my favorite stories about the only time i’ve had to yell at a customer.
To set the scene, my home store is a cafe store in the downtown area of my city (i’m now on my third store since the pandemic) our whole crew had consisted of my manager, 4 shifts and 10 baristas. not a whole lot, right? well, we used to have this thing we used to call Crappy Hour, bc it was a “bogo” starbucks did on frappes once upon a time. i’m sure some older/former partners have been through that hell too… either way it was my first ever Crappy Hour with another newer partner. to give a brief idea how quickly it got busy; me and this partner were making one frap together, then she turned around and said “uh i think we need to work a little faster” in the time it took for us to make that ONE frap, we had 15 mobile fraps come in……

fast forwards a little bit of time and our lobby is a SEA of people, probably exceeding max capacity for the store AND the line was out the door. everyone is working as fast at they can, we have three people on frap bars (one for prep, one for blending and one for lidding and handing out) and two on hot bar when suddenly we hear
“hello? um, hi? hello? you? you right there? heyyyyy?” she was doing this to every partner who got within arms reach of her. My shift was getting annoyed and same with all my other partners who were stuck in their positions. It only took two more minutes of this for me to whip around and say “yes ma’am what is so important?”
she says, “hi, it’s been 10 minutes since i placed my order and i still don’t have my drinks” the fact that this is what she tried to stop anybody she could for, infuriated me and i could see that my other partners were also annoyed/angered by this.
i just look her in the eyes and go “do you not see the crowd of people around you?? we have frap drinks lined down the bar and just you stopping me right now has probably put your drink behind for another 5 minutes bc i had to stop what i was doing to help you. you and everyone else here are all still waiting for their drinks, you aren’t special!”
she gawks at me and decides she’s gonna keep going and says “i’m gonna be late for work is there a way you could skip the line for me.”
“no, it’s not my fault you have poor time management skills, you saw a crowd of people and still decided to place an order,”
“then i need a refund!” she was raising her voice now so i simply raised mine back 🥰
“you are MORE than welcome to get in the back of the line, i would LOVE to get you that refund!!” (can you taste the sarcasm) she looked absolutely appalled at me.
“but i need to be at work in 5 minutes!!!”
“then you better START WALKING, i’ll be more than happy to give you a refund later if you come back, but no one here is going to do anything for you”
and with that she was red in the face and then left.

thats all but it’s my favorite story bc it’s the only time i’ve been able to do that!

TL;DR: A karen got upset that she didnt get her drinks fast enough midst one of the busiest days at our store that year, and i got to be the one to yell at her :)

My dream customer fight
Dance_partyzone [OP] 12 points 1y ago
thank you!!! I felt like they were appropriate ☺️ i didn’t get in any sort of trouble for it either which was the best part. nothing beats yelling at a customer and getting away with it 😎

Lol “what’s so important?!” 😂😂😂

If u late for work… don’t order. Is she dumb?
aspiringgrandpa 24 points 1y ago
the amount of people who order at peak then tell you they’re late for work really makes me lose hope for humanity 😭
uwumoment 6 points 1y ago
it used to make me upset/angry. now im like uhmmm ok…? and laugh it off bc seriously that’s not my problem and i feel bad for letting my past self think it was
Necessary_Low939 7 points 1y ago
Make sure u make their drinks slower for them because I do ha
uwumoment 5 points 1y ago
aw i do the same lol
aspiringgrandpa 3 points 1y ago
LMAO same i will put their sticker last if they keep bothering me 30 seconds after they ordered
Necessary_Low939 6 points 1y ago
No ima be like don’t order then. If u know ure gonna be late then take the L and don’t bitch about it. When im late to work ima buy something. Im late anyways. If I know I can make it to work on time, I won’t order. People set themselves up for failure like wtf

Bravo 👌 lol i loved the story. I have too many of my own as well haha. Im quitting starbucks soon after a little over 2 years cuz u just found a compounding pharmacy technician job thru a regular that was coming to starbucks all the time. They pay more than Starbucks to start me off and will pay more after 3 months if they see im doing well. Its a full time position and they offer full benefits. The regular that was always coming in, her and her husband owned a mainly compounding pharmacy and they sold it to another chief operations officer and she was able to get me the job there knowing that my dream job is working in the pharmacy 🙂 congrats on ur upcoming promotion to customer
cookiemonstah87 6 points 1y ago
That's awesome! I've known a couple people who work in pharmacies over the years. They both say it's really solid/stable work, and have very few complaints! The only things they do complain about are customer-related, but it seems to be less frequent and less obnoxious than uncaffeinated starbucks karens
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 1y ago
Lmao uncaffeinated starbucks karens 🤣 yea ive worked at a pharmacy a few years back and we sure did get some rude people and people who weren't understanding. But yea the job itself is very nice. I feel sad and happy at the same time cuz i love my manager and some of my coworkers 😬

look at us moving up! There has been no better promotion than being promoted to customer, feels liberating! Share some stories on here once you’re out!!!!
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 1y ago

Beautiful. May starbucks never bring back crappy hour ever again 🙏

this is amazing.

For a while, my store was very understaffed, especially at night. We're not far from the hospital so we get lots of night nurses stopping by. One time, it was just me on the floor doing solo drive AND solo bar. It's chaotic. These girls start banging on the drive thru window and yelling st me to give them their drinks I was making because they were running late. I wish i could've yelled back at them
mewwissa 3 points 1y ago
I have NEVER understood the “I’m gonna be late for work” people. Like okay?? I’m here to make you coffee, not take care of your personal problems. If you can’t wait that’s your own fault.
todaytrip 3 points 1y ago
I’m always so casual and honest with customers who complain about wait times like that.

Them: “I ordered my drinks 15 minutes ago!”

Me: *gestures vaguely at the crowded cafe*

“Yes. So did everybody else”
Dance_partyzone [OP] 1 points 1y ago
LITERALLY MY STORY IS A FEW SENTENCES LMAO i don’t know how they can really think the world revolves around them and their schedules
natalie_____ 3 points 1y ago
as someone who works at a grocery store sbux right next to a big train station, i can understand the situation, people just don’t read the area!!! if you are in a rush do notttt except that your drink will be done in a snap, especially if it’s packed like your store was. i’m so sorry you had to deal with someone so inconsiderate 😔😔😔
Jaded_Fun_7133 2 points 1y ago
I felt relief reading this
easymachtdas 2 points 1y ago
Don’t know how you all do it, kudos to you for not having an absolute meltdown. I couldn’t do it.
Dance_partyzone [OP] 1 points 1y ago
you grow some pretty thick skin working at starbucks, prior to this experience ive had someone throw their COLD (thankfully) drink on me, ive had a customer stalk me, i’d been yelled at several times, at that point in this story, it felt like squashing an ant bc ive already had a lot worse. i pray some of these things don’t happen to you but the only reason i didn’t break down crying is bc i had exceeded the point where i was gonna cry, i wanted to fight LMAO
easymachtdas 1 points 1y ago
I’m luckily not a Starbucks employee. I’m here solely for these posts… I’ve been in customer service so I have an idea of how shitty people can be. Starbucks surely gets some of the worst of that >_< I wish you strength, I’m about to switch careers from food delivery to automotive work. At least I know what I’m in for with machines =|

I always thought I wanted to be a barista for a while for the experience and my love of coffee, I truly don’t believe I would last long after some of these tales in this sub @__@‘
mrcupcake18 2 points 1y ago
Omg duuuuuuude I actually clapped after reading this hahaha I’ve had a couple of those and I’m like wtf? The latest one I didn’t even say anything but booooooy was I trying to be subtle about my attitude but I was annoyed that this man kept staring at me and I messed up his drink because he made me nervous. Finally tuned him out and was able to concentrate on other drinks as well as remaking his at the same time and when he kept asking where his drink was oh man I wanted to throw that drink but all that came out was “I was just about to hand it to you, I was making four other drinks along with yours” and I was being kinda short with him and I just hear him go “what’s wrong with you man?” But I ignored him. Ugh it was even more annoying that I got talked to afterwards -___-
Dance_partyzone [OP] 2 points 1y ago
you got talked to about that?!? i’m at work all the time telling customers i only have two hands and two feet when they ask me where their drink is or when they ordered 11 friggin drinks and they’re not all out at the same time…
