so…my store filed to unionize. everything went down today (today was my day off so i have no idea how things went).
my coworkers who are leading the whole thing told me we should expect a lot of one on ones with corporate + our sm. i truthfully don’t know a lot about unions, and i don’t know what i’ll do or say when i get stuck in a 1 on 1 with my dm. i’m not a confrontational person, and if they demand an explanation i’ll literally break down.
so…anyone else who is going through the union process rn please give me advice. i truthfully want to just lay low and help out where i can without having to talk to corporate/sm/dm directly.

First things first, it's nothing to be scared of bc they can not fire you for wanting to unionize. If I were you I would just be open and honest and talk about the things you're unhappy with that a union would solve. There's a lot of articles about the starbucks union and you can be educated on it before making a decision. Hope that helps.

Honestly if you don’t know a whole lot just tell them that. Be prepared for them to say a bunch of misleading info to you and try to persuade you though. The leaders should have a connect with information on common misconceptions & what have you. I’m not gonna put but so much on here but feel free to DM me about it & remember that y’all do have rights as workers whether you want the union or not, but they’re honestly really gunning for the public leaders vs just staff who happen to work there.

Write out your statement ahead of time along with a talking point or two of your feelings on some of the common points they try to make and questions they ask.
Especially your grievances, not just a general soliloquy going over your thoughts on unions in general.

Hey! So I'm a partner in Buffalo, and went through a lot of these things. I would just say you don't have to say anything other than ok, and thank you so much. I treat union busters like I treat Karen's in my cafe: we can't have an honest conversation, but I can get you to go away with a smile.

thank you!!! my SSV told me to “play dumb and say there’s nothing they can do to change my vote” so…we’ll see 🤞

If you want to be super confrontational, that's cool too! But the fact is the company takes advantage of partners with anxiety when they do things like this because they hope the stress alone will get them to vote no.

During the 1:1 meeting, simply listen to them, say you're open to hearing them explain their perspective if they want, but say that you don't want to explain your opinion or debate the issue with them and refuse all attempts of being baited into doing so. According to US law, your employer cannot force you to disclose your opinion on unions, or to answer any question about it, or to debate it. The company is stressing you out, manipulating you into meetings you don't want, trying to get you to hate unions, they do **not** want an honest debate; if you say any reason why you like unions they will use the information as a tool for them to manipulate you more and pressure you more on certain issues; refuse to answer any questions, do not debate anything with them, simply listen.
After this is done, vote yes to the union for better pay and benefits (your vote is secret) and to finally end this sort of bad treatment for your company; it'd be even better if you convince all your coworkers to also support it.

dang sounds like a lot… best of luck to you. i don’t know much about unionizing either but from what i heard i don’t think it’s a good choice. but i could be totally wrong since i don’t know a whole lot.
hope everything goes well! best of luck!

It’s a great choice. It’s going to be worth it for sure. We’ll have a say over hours, wages, ect because we’ll have had a discussion with corporate instead of them dictating what they are

yeah that does sound pretty great. i’d definitely have to do a lot more research on that stuff to have more of an opinion on the subject. so i guess for now i should just say i’m neutral on it :)
but thank you for clarifying, i didn’t know that’s what it was like at all. everything i’ve heard about it was from dumb tv shows lol.

The culture in the US is that unionization is bad but that comes from capitalism that is trying to make profits. This company wants nothing but profit, anything that cuts into that is classified as bad. They will try to dissuade you against it. Do your own research and get informed. Stay strong!
