I hate asking for customers’ names. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by EarthLaser
It makes me uncomfortable; it makes them uncomfortable. Some people look taken aback when I ask, like they have no idea that we need to call a name so they get the right drink. I hate having to ask them to repeat it enough times that they snap at me. And some people refuse to tell me their name at all which ends the interaction on a sour note. Then you have to push the order through with no name on it and the bar/handoff person has to struggle to get their attention for two minutes to hand them their drink 🤦‍♂️

“This says Emily but my name is Emma-Lee? Is this my drink?” *is the only person waiting in the cafe*

Lmao yesterday i was on bar and some dude ordered an iced coffee with just a few things in there and i couldnt pronounce his name and didnt wana butcher it but i put the drink at handoff and he was sitting at a table right by the handoff area and when i put the drink down, we looked at eachother and i said "iced coffee" and he got up to look at the sticker and he sat back down. Then a few moments later, my coworker was fixing the mobile order area and asked the customer if thats his iced coffee and he grabbed it. It was obviously his. I think he scanned his phone because his name was spelled a specific way that had to be automatically put there from scanning the account on his app cuz i couldnt pronounce the name so theres no way the barista on register was able to get the right spelling. So he was literally the only one in the cafe and didnt grab his drink at first and then did once my coworker showed it to him

It kills me when people do this and just awkwardly don’t say anything for 10 min

Yea i mean if theyre the only ones in the cafe then like wat the hell? Even if the barista mis-typed ur name...its close to urs and ur the only one in the cafe. If the drink is similar to urs but theres a mistake on it and ur the only one in the cafe then its urs. Like speak up and say something cuz im busy and dont have the time to baby people around. The other day, i had this guy come up to the risers that the mobile order drinks sit on and he grabbed a drink and said "is this mine?" ....i dont even kno who the hell u are or wat u ordered. So i said theres a sticker on the cup that will tell u the name and the type of drink and he looked at it and said "oh ok yea this is mocha with nonfat, its mine". Then there was this lady that had apparently ordered a grande hot coffee with whole milk at the register and she wasn't even waiting 5 minutes and then she grabs a drink from the mobile order area and didn't even look at the cup to see what type of drink it was but she just grabbed it and luckily my coworker caught that and told the lady that she ordered a hot coffee in store and not the drink that she was holding. I don't know what people think sometimes or what is going on in their heads when they perform these actions but it's really beyond me

You could try "can I get a name for the order?"
TheRockWitch 9 points 1y ago
This. Any name, idc! And if they walk away or are rude I just put “Thank You” or “have a good day”

I love when ppl make up names too so I encourage it!

Yeah that’s what I say
ihateyousoymatcha 8 points 1y ago
I add it to the total.

"That'll be 34.95 and a name for the order?"

I also say A name and not YOUR name because I honestly don't care what name they pick as long as they remember it. Takes off some of the pressure

Registers at my store ate right by the bar so if i hear a customer unwilling to give their name to the barista on register, ill happily read off everything on the sticker at the handoff area cuz some people dont want others to kno exactly what theyre drinking...and its even better wen it has a ton of mods on their cuz it will make them wish they gave ANY name

“Alright, I’ve got [repeat back order]. What name should I put on this?” I never ask their name; Big Daddy, Batman, Her Royal Highness, Tina is Great. Any little bit of levity and buy-in I can get out of them. If they smile they tip better. And common names, I’ll ask how do they want that spelled. “With or without the H?” for Sara/Sarah/Sean/Shawn . If they balk at the question I go with, “Don’t want you to have to drink someone else’s drink if I can help it.”

“What name shall I use for the order?” “Your order will be ready at the end of this bar, what name would you like us to call out?” Instead of “what is YOUR name?” They’re more likely to give you whatever they feel comfortable giving.

Honestly I’m just super hard of hearing so I hate asking because I never actually hear it. Either I hear something close-but-not-right or I don’t understand them at all and then I have to ask them multiple times. I’m much better at taking orders since I know what the drinks generally sound like, no matter how muffled it is, but names are a complete mystery 99% of the time. Also the reason I hate trying to make small talk at the register or on bar, I can’t hear them!!

“Can I have a name for them to call when your orders ready?” I like that phrasing.. makes it seem like it’s not a personal thing just helpful in getting the right service.

I have social anxiety too and I just try to pretend that I’m acting in a play and we’re both reading lines from a script. I know my lines but I don’t know theirs. So I say my lines and act and then after a while it becomes habit and feels more like checking off a to-do list than having to act. I do it on DTO too. I have the same lines and the same act. Sometimes I have to improvise when small talking at the window and then I just let myself be weird and chatty because they’re kind of forced to put up with me until their drink comes
