I had called out, explaining i tried to find coverage already and that i physically can’t get to work (better explained in comments)(reddit.com)

My car unexpectedly did not turn on today, so i called, 3 hours before my shift, and said Me- “i can’t come in since this happened and i already asked everyone and no one can cover” SM- “well can you get like a taxi or uber?” me- “i used the money i had to get my car towed to the shop and to pay for the repairs, i asked family for help and i’m just really unable to get to work.” SM- “Well it’s still early so your going to have to find a way to get here” Ready to quit ✨ and now he’s telling me that this is “not ok” and i “need to keep them updated” on what? and situation i already broke down for you? And the reason i didn’t answer is cuz i don’t want him to make me feel bad for physically not being able to show up cuz he does it often when i decline to pick up a shift. THIS IS ALSO MY 2ND TIME IN ALMOST A YEAR CALLING OUT
UPDATE!! I got written up for a final warning :) and he said i should “just not call out anymore since it leaves us short staffed and ruins the shift for everyone else” He marked both of my call outs as no call no shows 🧍♀️ Then proceed to say that he told our DM all about what happened like damn i’ll walk next time
cringeqween13152 points1y ago
If they want or need you there that badly why didn't they offer to give you a ride or pay for an taxi for you
GoDieInTheWeeds30 points1y ago
That's big facts, I've sent baristas, and actually gone myself as a SSV before to go pick up people to help them get to work. People need to work to live, calling out doesn't mean you don't wanna work, there are just circumstances that are sometimes unavoidable
KairiFlame56 points1y ago
A similar situation happened to me. I was the opening shift and my car would not start. I ended up calling my boss to inform them that I had no way of getting to work. They demanded for me to find a way to still get there. I used up the rest of my money on an Uber to work but they sent me home due to how emotionally distraught I was over my car. That day I had to walk home.
SnooShortcuts857013 points1y ago
i can’t believe they had the audacity.
Dance_partyzone43 points1y ago
ive had manager pay for my ubers before, that is worth reporting, they aren’t allowed to verbally harass you for being unable to show up. in the handbooks, if you are unable to get to your shift and you’ve done everything you can, it is in your SM’s responsibility. he could potentially get fired for that tbh….
CommanderWar648 points1y ago
More managers need to have a “shit happens” approach to people calling in sick/off. Shit happens, there’s not much you can do except make life easier for the people who are currently working. If getting coverage isn’t possible, try closing early to get everything done, turn mobiles off, etc…
Binx_da_gay_cat4 points1y ago
Idk if you know this but there is Lyft to work free with SBux if your store allows it. It has some limitations, but it's there. There's also some cases in cities with busses and metro systems that SBux will cover some of the costs for that.
imeanitpeanut3 points1y ago
Give your manager as little information as possible. The more information you give them the more they will try to problem solve the situation instead of accept it. “I’m sorry, I can’t make it in because of a personal emergency” doesn’t give them anything to pick apart and try to solve.
lechatsombre3 points1y ago
They 100% should have offered to buy you an Uber.
gemi-high1 points1y ago
as a shift that has and will continue giving baristas rides when they need it, if you do end up quitting, id be vert happy for you to tell your boss there are other partners who think his behavior is ridiculous and he should have and could have done better, and treated you with respect and dignity.
Ok_Reflection_97931 points1y ago
This is why I do everything by text message. That way you have proof that you talked to your manager about the situation.
caspi31 points1y ago
My store has a policy where you aren’t allowed to use text as a form of communication with the manager and that if you need something you must call or you could get a write up
dthomp08062 points1y ago
That's not your store. That's a company policy. Some sms chose to follow it, some don't.
Brgnbo133 points1y ago
I remember this happened to me once like car broke down, no money, literally called the store sobbing saying I couldn’t come in and why and my shift literally sent someone to pick me up.. the store was dead that day smh I could’ve stayed home and figured out my car stuff
What1sgr3y [OP]68 points1y ago
i wasn’t even offered a ride
Brgnbo56 points1y ago
You had no reason to go in anyway especially if you already discussed it with them. My ride wasn’t a kind offer lmao I got to work and my shift gave me a lecture on how my problems didn’t matter compared to anyone else’s so
sammieduck6942020 points1y ago
And that’s when I ask if this job is my problem- shift admits this job is my problem after saying my problems don’t matter and say “alright, if my problems don’t matter, I quit and you can’t care” as I walk out to find any other cafe to work at. Because sometimes I think people forget that while I absolutely love my team and they’re the only reason I’m there, I can easily, easily get another job at another cafe….

So i've seen partners get fired in retaliation for something small and the reasoning is usually being a few min late everyday and not communicating about being late prior... queue story time... SO I decided to be so compliant it made my manager uncomfortable... I had to call out because I had bad sushi and woke up at 2am with stomach cramping and was stuck on the toilet and puking in a trash can all at once.... I called my manager at 3am.... No answer... I called her 5 more times within the next hour... 30 min before we open no response.... So I called her one last time she answered... Only thing I was still very sick while calling her I puked mid sentence she covered my shift for me that morning.... Once I was late because my cat who had surgery shat on my apron while I was cleaning her bum (she had a cone and couldn't) and I was waiting for it to finish drying... I called and told my SM exactly that... She also points out that the way I keep open lines of communication always "kept the team in mind" and "we could all take a lesson from.." I make it so very blunt and honest to the point she doesn't question it if im calling off theres probably a good reason she doenst wanna argue because she knows I will become even more honest... lmao its a win win they think youre awesome for always communicating you get the day off without an argument in your situation start off fine sounding but then halfway through your 2nd sentence start breakdown crying and they will give you the day off
cringeqween1338 points1y ago
One of the things I hated about working opening shifts is not being able to call directly to the store if I had to call out
eatass420vorelord8 points1y ago
I just text the opening shift as soon as I know I won't be able to make it in. They're off the clock and they usually appreciate me not bothering them if they aren't getting paid.
moon_light5232 points1y ago
I called out and when they pressed me for more details I started to sob cause I was moving that day bc my family got evicted without warning. I said I had to go when I started to sob, and hung up cause to be frank I didn’t want to sob on the phone
the shift texted me later and was like “you hurt my feelings” and I never responded cause I had to transfer stores anyways lol
Mission-Accident-9172 points1y ago
I cant wait to promote myself to partner ngl I hate this company with a passion
moon_light5231 points1y ago
yeah I agree lol
Upstairs_Raise745023 points1y ago
Was the person who called you a shift or the sm? If it was a shift, I'd get in touch with your sm and show them this too.
What1sgr3y [OP]14 points1y ago
i replied to the post breaking down what happened in the first call but it was the sm
Upstairs_Raise745014 points1y ago
Oh gotcha, must not have loaded yet. Wasn't any other comments. Since it was your sm, you could call or email your dm and explain to them what happened.
What1sgr3y [OP]10 points1y ago
how would i find the dm’s contact info? I don’t want to get in trouble for something i can’t control
Upstairs_Raise745010 points1y ago
If you feel comfortable, you can reach out to a shift and ask for their info that way. Or like at my store for instance, we have a board in the back with different weekly happenings and info stuff, one of which is actually an email from our dm with his info at the top.
Upstairs_Raise74507 points1y ago
If they don't have that info or you aren't comfortable with talking to them, you can login into the partner hub and search for your dm by searching their name or your district number.
permanently_anxious16 points1y ago
They used to do this to one of my partners all the time who dealt with mental illnesses and they wound up firing her. The last day she was there she said to my manager stuff like "do you get off on making 20 something year old cry" and I was gone by then but I was so proud.
thatswackrhi12 points1y ago
I had my car literally broken into and was robbed. When I called my SM i was literally on the phone after just seeing my car had been broken into (it was 30 minutes before my shift, I live 15 minutes away from my work (i like to be a bit early)) and was asked if I could still come in and when I said (paraphrased, i was nicer but panicked) No because my car had just been ROBBED and that I needed to call the police. I was met with a sigh and was told that I was being “an inconvenience.” and that “two people already called out with car troubles.” As If I was lying. As If I was just having causal “car troubles.”
pretiburdi9 points1y ago
My apartment burned down last year and my principal texted me like “so you’re not coming in tomorrow? Let me know so I can get a sub for you” Bruh. My apartment burned down. I have no clothes, no things. You want me to show up to work and teach kids like this? C’mon
edreesmiraki11 points1y ago
istg for some reason every sm is a dickhead
idkcassie10 points1y ago
reminder I will tell everyone bc manager’s suck: if you absolutely cannot go in, tell them you’re throwing up. i don’t care if you are or not. family emergency? you’re throwing up. car troubles? you’re throwing up. They will give you shit for things out of your control, but they cannot tell you to come in if you’ve recently thrown up, it’s against health code and you can call the partner resources whatever if they try.
RosyHue8 points1y ago
I came to say this too. You are not allowed to work if you’ve thrown up in 24 hours. I have had several personal reasons for callouts in my 3 years, and I say I’ve thrown up. They cannot ask you to come in, they have to find a cover and you have a day to figure out your situation before making decisions regarding future shifts. I think I maybe called out 10 times in 3 years, they can’t ask why once you mentioned throwing up. Remind them of our health and safety training, and thank them for helping you while you “recover”, and don’t stress.
Responsible_Snow710910 points1y ago
My store has the DMs cards by the condiment bar area with his contact info on it. Maybe see if ur store has that too or check any postings on the fridges, freezers or any boards in the back room for his contact info
Litfitness7 points1y ago
If you tried to find coverage and no one could work for you it comes down to the store manger to help you find coverage. If you live close enough to another store maybe they can pull someone from another store. Honestly after working for the company for 4 years and having been gone for 2 years it makes me sad that Starbucks still expects so much of partners. They should be lucky you made an effort to get it covered. Most of my partners (I was ASM when I left) would wait until 30 minutes or less to call so for you to call 3+ hours before is honorable and good. Your SM should have made a better effort to help you find coverage
CardiographicDuck6 points1y ago
My boss did this to me one day and I told her if she wanted me to come in, she was going to have to come and get me herself.
Rita_Rossweisse6 points1y ago
Hey, so I’m gonna sound like a SUPER shitty person saying this, but as per company policy, your store manager basically did everything they were supposed to do. I’M NOT SAYING ITS RIGHT OR CONDONING THAT THIS IS COOL, but shift managers have callouts procedures that they’re technically supposed to follow.
$1 is a link to a post that shows the procedures in r/antiwork. It’s pretty fucked up.
However, I am TOTALLY on your side with this. This shit happens sometimes, and we don’t get paid enough for me to even buy good bread, how the fuck am I gonna have money for an UBER?
Edit:
Also, make sure that you keep record of calling early. You gave fair warning, you tried finding coverage, you even tried to get a ride to work. That’s the most important part, you tried all that you could, so you still shouldn’t be written up for any of it. But just in case, keep records!
cookiemonstah8710 points1y ago
Lol. Even if I had money for an Uber, I ain't taking an Uber at 4 am!!! I live in a sketchy area and waiting outside for my ride at that time isn't wise. Plus Ubers make me nervous even midday... I'm probably paranoid, but there are way too many horror stories for my liking.
I once had to call out for an opening shift for car trouble. The only option I had to get to work at all was a cab that couldn't pick me up until over an hour into my shift, and would end up costing twice what I would have made that day. Fuck that.
sheep_heavenly5 points1y ago
Bro that's not actual policy. It's obvious from the verbiage: mental health days only allowed if schedule can support (what schedule ever supports someone calling off?), Under school "is it something that could be fixed by maybe coming in a little later?" 3 callouts in 3 months = irregular attendance? None of that is written or structured like an official policy.
This is some micromanaging SM who wants their SSVs to grill baristas calling out. Fuck that lmao. Give me a reason, I'll pass it on to my SM, it's not my job to interrogate baristas over the phone.
blubber1143 points1y ago
Okay but the partner handbook says to call “as soon as you know”. Op did this. They also looked for coverage as per procedure and did not find any. At this point it defaults to the SM. You are not right here per Starbucks but every SM uses this logic to be a d*ck when they are in fact not living up to their responsibilities as per the handbook.
dthomp08061 points1y ago
Also your car breaking down is an emergency, it's not your job, at starbucks, to find coverage. It's the shifts job. It's in the handbook and on the thing our schedules are hung up on.
dthomp08061 points1y ago
That's not for starbucks
[deleted]6 points1y ago
You can also find your DM’s info online. When I transferred states, it was incredibly difficult to contact the SM and I saw somewhere how to contact the DM. Give me like two seconds and I’ll edit this or reply to this comment with how to do it
[deleted]4 points1y ago
In case you need to do it online. If you go to the partner website (partner . starbucks . com) what I did was search my manager’s name and then looked at all her people through the submenu and my DM was the only one without a partner number next to her
Necessary_Low9395 points1y ago
Lol u have screenshots to prove so u good
Prudent_Preparation13 points1y ago
id say try to go online and find the DM’s number but that may be hard. i do know getting in contact with another stbx near by if you ask them for the DM’s info (which is likely the same if its close by) you may be able to find help. i hate people like that smh
lilcox14192 points1y ago
Sounds like it's time to transfer or leave the company. Bad leadership causes stress and you don't need that on top of what you're dealing with already.
What1sgr3y [OP]3 points1y ago
i’m hopefully moving soon and will be transferring to a store closer
dthomp08062 points1y ago
Next time just say you have a personal emergency. You don't owe them any details nor should they be asking.
thatswackrhi1 points1y ago
this!!! this this this! Know your boundaries. Work is employment, not a best friend. They dont get to know your personal details!!

When I was a partner, my vehicle’s transmission was going so I couldn’t reverse the car some mornings to get out of my driveway. I told my SM this and she kind of laughed it off and thought I was lying, but later told me she understood. One morning, I couldn’t get the vehicle out of park; drive and reverse were also out of the question. I called my SSV and told her what was going on. She was kind enough to come get me but we were 5 mins late to open the store. The SM was there, she screamed at us and threatened that she would write us up on the spot. She never did but from that day forward, I could never trust my SM & I started seeing right through her. She was insane…the same issue happened to another coworker and she said “oh my, I’m so sorry that happened” and she never threatened or wrote her up…..
Moral of the story: some SM’s wonder why employee turnover for their store is so high… they’re the problem.
himynametopher2 points1y ago
This right here is why I’m so glad so many stores are starting to unionize.
Total_Bookkeeper42372 points1y ago
I’m curious regarding upvote/downvote ratio, so here it goes lol r/AntiWork
biggestsaddest1 points1y ago
Shoutout to the time I called out to evacuate early for a hurricane and my manager tried to guilt me into driving back into town after I was already over 2 hours away
sodakinq1 points1y ago
Yeah I basically had to “figure it out “ when my car broke down and it took like a week to get a new one.
lonclefemelle1 points1y ago
i had to walk over a mile in the rain the other day because my car got a flat. fuck this place.
sir_ramen1 points1y ago
That was hard to read lol.
RinnTheOtter1 points1y ago
You guys are silly, we have a sick policy, and if you’re not being supported call the PRSC. They will breathe down whichever neck they need to, but they’ll get the situation handled
pretiburdi2 points1y ago
At the very least it will be documented through PRSC that you said this was a problem!
