Anyone else working at additional jobs? Working about 70 hr work weeks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by mekayla96
Just had an interview with a local restaurant that I want to work for in addition to full time at Starbucks but I’m so nervous that it will be too much. However I’m 25, living with my parents, and Starbucks alone isn’t enough income to support myself fully so I don’t see another way around it! I guess I’m just looking for assurances that it can be done lol. As well as ASU because I’m wanting to do that too 😅

i opened at starbucks full time t-sa 4-1230p, worked at a juice bar 1-5p 4x/week and i went to school on campus full time in the evenings from 5:30-10 3-5x/week. it was honestly one of the hardest things i’ve ever done. it lasted about 6 months before i had to quit my part time job. i was sacrificing the 5 hours of sleep a night for homework/studying and that just wasn’t worth it. i had a day off like once a month and it was usually spent catching up on school. i wish i could say it was worth it, i’m just glad to be alive tbh haha.

Yeah I’m scared of getting too in over my head. And I don’t quit things easily because I’m afraid of letting people down so I think I would just run myself to dust before ever backing down at all

looking back, i was the worst partner i’d ever been- professionally and romantically- and i can honestly say i’ve never cried in the back room as much as i did and felt was “normal” in those 6 months haha

Choose yourself first. Any job is able to replace you so don’t sacrifice on behalf of the job if it is negatively impacting your life. They’ll manage without you and you can still go in and see your old coworkers whenever you want as a customer. We have an ex partner that still comes in with cookies and birthday cards

I was in your spot two years ago. Ready to move out, was only at starbucks and duh it’s not enough. For a year I killed myself doing a full-time job and starbucks and it’s not worth it if you are safe and comfortable at home
mekayla96 [OP]7 points1y ago
I’m safe at home but just so uncomfortable. My parents have such a small house and are so over baring. I know I should be grateful but all I want is to live on my own 😔
galaxyd1ngo1 points1y ago
I definitely know what you mean. I wish I had waited until I had an actual survivable job to move out because I was paycheck to paycheck until just about now. Do you have a friend you could move in with to make the financial part not hit so hard?
mekayla96 [OP]3 points1y ago
No 😭 all my friends are married or have better jobs than me lol. I’ve considered finding a roommate I just don’t know if I’d want to live with someone. I lived with roommates for a couple years before covid but it didn’t end well. It was an engaged couple though 🙄

big mood. I had only had bad roommate experience before now that I got an actual friend with me

If you want to do ASU, please note that each class takes about 18-20 hours a week of work (at least in my experience as an English major. I imagine something in the sciences is more taxing). I barely made 35 hrs and 2-3 classes per session work. Everyone's threshold is different, but consider either focusing on working 2 full time jobs or doing Starbucks and ASU before adding more work.

😅hahahahahahah
CoffeeChesirecat2 points1y ago
😅 yikes.
I wish you lots of luck. I totally get that living at home can be a drag, and it's tough to get started in life these days.
mekayla96 [OP]2 points1y ago
Thank you. I’m really at a loss at how to get ahead these days. It just seems so impossible!

I’ve had times where I was working that much and trying to do school and it was awful. My grades were terrible and I wasn’t even doing that well at work because I was exhausted. I really wouldn’t recommend it. It isn’t sustainable, your mental health and grades are going to take a nose dive.
What eventually put me in a good spot was working 30-40 hours a week while also transferring to ASU. The good thing with ASU is that you can take as little classes as you want and there’s a lot more flexibility since it’s online. I found online school a lot easier than in person, but that’s something that’s different for each person/major.
Ultimately it’s up to you and you can definitely try working that many hours and see how it goes. The good thing about food/retail jobs is that it’s easy to decrease your hours if you need to while taking a difficult class or something. If you want to go that route definitely look into and take advantage of any resources provided by starbucks or ASU, there’s a BUNCH and they’re all free.

Yeah I’m thinking of maybe just doing literally one class at a time so it’s not so much. But idk.
coffeenb12 points1y ago
It could be too much but honestly why don’t you just give it a try? Worst case scenario you make some extra money for a bit and save up and then end up quitting one of the jobs, whichever you like less. It CAN be done, but it really depends on a lot of things like the jobs, how easily you get burnt out, etc. Let me just say I’m in a very similar situation as you and I feel you 😭😭😭
mekayla96 [OP]6 points1y ago
Ugh it’s so hard. I literally hate living here in the United States. Living comfortably is impossible. I think that’s a good point though. I might as well try haha
coffeenb11 points1y ago
I’m in Canada and idk how it really compares but cost of living is insane 😭 it seriously fucking sucks and like you I’m grateful to be able to stay with my parents but I dream about moving out everyday lol but it seems so impossible
mekayla96 [OP]2 points1y ago
Yes! It is so impossible! The only way that seems somewhat feasible is if I have a roommate but then what’s the point 😭😭
coffeenb14 points1y ago
BAHAHA I KNOW 💀 like I don’t want to be around people that’s literally why I want to move out
kmoonster1 points1y ago
I did for about 5 or 8 years, with a 2 hour commute at two different points.
I could now (I need the $) but between the pandemic and the fact I'm now 50+ at one job and seasonal at another...yeah, no.

What I really want is for rent to choose where it will be. The one thing worse than high rent is climbing/unknown rent. We currently pay $\`16/m for a crummy 2-bed that was $850 in 2014 and overpriced even then, never the same not even close) one lease to another-- and I'm over it.

I got a new job, it’s a night 12/h a day but I work either 60 hours a week or 24. I’m still at Starbucks for 1 day a week and am putting in my two weeks soon enough.
