I hate when people try tik tok “hacks” to save money. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Sad_Bar_6052
Ok I literally don’t know why, but I hate when people cheap out on drinks and expect the best quality…. I had a woman today try the tik tok hack where you order a doppio and have the baristas but extra milk in it so your getting a latte for the price of a doppio. She got extremely upset when she realized that we weren’t going to fill her venti cup as if it were a latte when she ordered a doppio….

As well as another person who ordered a pink drink with no ice and complained about how the coconut milk to strawberry açaí ratio was off?!? Like hello what do you want me to do about that when you mess up the ratio by taking the ice out?!

Anyone else?
geeg3131 113 points 1y ago
i totally get it, and i don’t know why it pisses me off so much. like i should be behind anyone scamming starbucks bc i hate my job, but it makes me so mad for some reason!!!
Sad_Bar_6052 [OP] 39 points 1y ago
I know!! I’m all for the people but idk why this irks me sm!
gabby24681 24 points 1y ago
It because they get so angy
permanently_anxious 35 points 1y ago
I bet you'd hate your job less if you worked for a company who didn't literally allow the customers to come in and take advantage of you as an employee lol. It's really crazy especially since the pandemic started the amount of shit that they get away with that we have to tolerate with when we're understaffed underpaid. People aren't tipping as much because they don't have any money but they have money to pay for a $5 coffee but they don't have money to tip you. Quitting the bux was the best thing I ever did.
katthekickass 35 points 1y ago
Gah I’m exactly the same way! Like, it’s not my money but if you’re gonna be cheap Starbucks isn’t exactly the place to go 😂
sheep_heavenly 20 points 1y ago
For me it's because they're usually unhappy regardless of if you help them with their hack (because a doppio extra milk is not a venti latte even if you do fill it up).

Also the fact that I've had it bashed over my head repeatedly to upsell to get more hours, some managers going as far as to say the baristas lack of upselling is the reason the labor is too low. So when someone makes our job more difficult to save a dollar for a drink they probably will be unhappy with, I remember that's one way we also lose income as workers.

It's whatever, I don't think about it much anymore, but it frustrates me when the annual "upsell or the lack of hours is on you guys uwu" comes around.
Assiqtaq 3 points 1y ago
They think they are getting one over on you. Like, no I totally see what you are doing. I also don't care.
thefoolwitch 100 points 1y ago
No yeah this also annoys the shit out of me.

It’s not that I don’t like people saving money or ripping off Sbux or whatever, it’s because the people who ask for it always seem to be weirdly smug and shitty about it the whole time + get absolutely bonkers pissed when it doesn’t work. Surprise surprise, Starbucks usually has rules in place to avoid this exact thing happening!

I am very short with people who can’t just laugh it off and say “it was worth a try!”.
Puddle_Duck88 51 points 1y ago
We get a lot of people asking for grande drinks and then getting to the window and saying “that’s supposed to be a venti” because they know if they wait to say something once they’ve paid then it’s more trouble to change it. I’m talking I repeated the order back to them before they pulled up, I had the drink in front of them when they got to the window, they go through the whole process of paying and then they say something about how it’s the wrong size. I even got yelled at because of it since it slows us down and one of my SSV’s loses her mind if we aren’t going at our fastest speed at all times
i_slipped- 17 points 1y ago
Bad ssv, I’m lucky enough my manager cares way more about customer connections then times.
Puddle_Duck88 13 points 1y ago
One of the other baristas mentioned our store reviews so I looked and there are several complaints about how the person at the window was unfriendly, they felt rushed, their food was practically thrown at them. I could tell instantly who they must have dealt with. She’s told us way too many times that we need to be throwing food out as fast as we can. If I’m waiting on food or a frappe or something and try to chat and then the food/drink shows up but the customer is still talking and not leaving she gets mad at me about it but our store manager is the opposite and she will remind you to be chatty if you aren’t and they’re there at the same time so you have one person telling you to talk and one person telling you to stop talking and so now you’re trying to take orders, take payment, get everything out to the right person, keep up the line, and be constantly watching to see who’s around so you don’t get fussed at
i_slipped- 5 points 1y ago
Ok you’re little avatar is adorable just noticed, anyways. Honestly, are you able to talk to your manager about it, I think I would if it was me but I’m not sure lol. That’s so horrible though, I understand needing the store to run smoothly but still that’s ridiculous.
Puddle_Duck88 3 points 1y ago
Yes. And yes it is. And it got another girl thinking she can yell at people and she’s not even a SSV. That girl got coached but I don’t know if our SSV ever did because she’s still snappy at certain people. She hasn’t yelled at me in a while but then I’ve also been avoiding working with her by swapping shifts when I can and staying out of her way as much as possible
sheep_heavenly 6 points 1y ago
SSVs tripping about the times makes me laugh, then get sad. We don't get any bonus for times, it's just making the baristas hate us so our manager gets a bigger bonus and a scapegoat if baristas fuss too loudly about the insane expectations.
cookiemonstah87 9 points 1y ago
We get this, and a lot of hot drinks that were actually supposed to be iced and vice versa after everyone in the store heard otherwise. If they're in drive-thru and we're busy, our manager actually won't let us remake the drinks anymore if they match what the sticker says, because our DTO people are REALLY good about going over the whole order as it's being ordered, and again at the end. If they want it bigger than what they ordered, they can come inside and we'll re-ring them properly and make new drinks.

One couple has done the "it's supposed to be hot/iced" multiple times and we were starting to suspect they were doing it on purpose. Even stopped remaking drinks for them entirely because there is no way that of all of our regulars, their order is the only one getting messed up every single day. Not even sure why they bother, it's not like it's any cheaper! But the other day, they were officially caught when they ordered shaken espressos and tried to say "um... I wanted this hot." No, you most definitely did not, because asking anyone in our store for a hot shaken espresso would have led to a slightly confused conversation, asking if you want a cappuccino with that flavoring.
Puddle_Duck88 9 points 1y ago
People are weird. We’ve had similar things and I end up feeling gaslit like “I swear you said you wanted it iced when I asked you which way you wanted it”. I feel like we should be recording them and be able to go back and listen to see which of us messed up. I definitely could have used it a few days ago when this lady got embarrassed because she didn’t know what she was ordering so she argued with me about it and changed her order no less than 10 times
cookiemonstah87 11 points 1y ago
My favorite is when it's a mobile order and they try to say they ordered a bigger size. Lol
Puddle_Duck88 7 points 1y ago
I love the customers who get mad that the order they placed is made in the way they ordered it. “This is supposed to have whip on top!”, “it doesn’t come with whip unless you add it in your order”, “I did!”, “it’s not on the sticker”
Necessary_Low939 6 points 1y ago
When they do that I said I repeated ur drink order using small medium large. So don’t try this bullshit with me. No one really does this at my store (in city, not drive thru) when they do, I make them pay for it. Like I’ll walk them back to charge them for vsccf or a size larger
Puddle_Duck88 3 points 1y ago
They do it at our cafe in the drive through because they know we’re in a rush because there’s always several cars in the line behind them and they intentionally wait until after they pay to say something so I can’t just change it really quick in the order, I’ll have to go back and void their order and redo it and then my SSV will come over and snap at me to just give them a new drink and go on to take the next order but if I was allowed to do it maybe they would stop doing it because it slows the drinks down having to remake them. But we all know it was ordered as a grande, the person on bar is already making it before the sticker came out because she heard me confirm that it was a grande, and yet I still get snapped at like it was my fault. My work alarm is about to go off and I’m making myself dread going in 🤦🏻‍♀️
Necessary_Low939 3 points 1y ago
No busy or not I make sure they pay
Puddle_Duck88 4 points 1y ago
If it was up to me I would. I would probably be a bad SSV because I wouldn’t care about line times at all. Quality over Quantity. I’d be taking my time to do everything right and not rushing and stressing my whole staff out and if a customer acts up we’d shut the whole show down to nip it in the bud because giving them free upgrades loses us more money and time in the long run because that behavior is getting rewarded and they keep repeating it and telling other people they can get by with it. And I know my store manager would be big mad about it. She once sent back a caramel macchiato four times because it didn’t have enough extra caramel but that thing was 75% caramel by the end. I feel like we used a whole bottle on it. She should have said “it’s got extra caramel on it” and refused to take it back after the first time I added more. That lady could not have sucked it through the big straw it was so thick. That’s doing way too much and it encourages entitlement and people trying to cheat us
interyx 30 points 1y ago
A lady ordered an ice water with six pumps of chai in it yesterday and tried to argue with me that it should be $0.86 instead of the $3.xx I charged for it.

I've been through the matcha water thing twice. Water with added ingredients needs to be charged as a custom iced tea because the price of ingredients is added to the base price of the drink and water has no base price, as it's not a handcrafted beverage. We've gotten multiple memos about this over the years with corrections to the standard.
rileyannschneider 25 points 1y ago
i totally get you. someone came into my store and asked for a grande pink drink with no ice and to make sure that the ratio was 45% açaí juice and 55% coconut milk :|
cookiemonstah87 19 points 1y ago
The fact that they know that's the ratio... I had no idea, if I had to guess based on measurements, I'd have said "idk, 50/50?"
ladyelenawf 3 points 1y ago
Is that the ratio for all of the refreshers with milk? I had to have my mercury fillings replaced with these new tooth colored ones. They are ridiculously sensitive to cold and hot now.

So when I ask for a large or extra large with no ice, I always let them know that I understand there will be room and I'm perfectly fine with that. Inevitably, the cup comes filled to the top. I don't want to easter anything, so I thank them and take it, but it just doesn't seem the same. How can I politely ensure I'm ordering it correctly?

Also, I was in a Target Starbucks about 2 or 3 weeks ago and they offered me a sample of a Pina Colada Refresher, but ever since then EVERY other store says that sounds like a secret menu thing. I finally made my way back to that target and they couldn't make it because they were out of coconut milk. Was it like when my mom used to work at Pizza Hut back in the eighties and just made stuff up for daily specials? Please help, I'm so confused.
iamelectrogirl13 5 points 1y ago
We did a drink once at my store for samples a while back that was just half coconut milk, half lemonade, with liquid cane. It does sort of taste like a pina colada. I personally like to add some raspberry in there too.
ladyelenawf 1 points 1y ago
Ah, okay. I'll have to try that at home, thank you.
rileyannschneider 3 points 1y ago
so to my understanding it’s always supposed to be 50% juice and 50% coconut milk. when people order it without ice i usually just eyeball the ratio to make sure it’s 50/50 or use the shaker to make sure the whole cup will be filled when i’m done, but it’s still a guess at that point. but yeah! measurements can be difficult without ice. and the pina colada drink does sound like the store was experimenting. licensed stores have a lot of more free time than corporate stores, so they’re able to create drinks for experimentation and promotion. i used to work at a barnes and noble starbucks and we promoted “secret menu drinks” in order to bring customers in :)
ladyelenawf 1 points 1y ago
Okay, thank you for the information!
everything4jimin 19 points 1y ago
the only hack I’m chill with and that we usually actively try to save people money is a dirty chai! Cheaper to add chai to a latte than it is to add espresso to a chai, we just have to ask about adding water sometimes. Literally all the others can go to hell lol. I have a regular that tries to add things to her mobile name because she’s not getting the “full amounts” of anything so she shouldn’t be charged. We’ve tried to tell her no one is reading the names unless we are really busy and calling mobile drinks out in the lobby but she insists.
dankmobile 12 points 1y ago
wait like.. she’s adding drink modifications to her name?? so that they print on the ticket but she doesn’t get charged? that’s insane omg
ChezShea 10 points 1y ago
This! Dirty chais are my go-to, and I share this tidbit with every single person that orders them.

The lady with the stuff with her name is hilarious. The only time I pay any attention to those is if they ask for a cup of water with (since they can’t be mobile ordered) or if they want something cooked longer, like a bagel.
Pyrexiana 5 points 1y ago
We have so many bitchy customers who pull the modifications-in-the-name thing with mobiles, and then they get pissed when they order 4 drinks and the all have the name “STEAMED CREAM” on them and meanwhile I have no idea which one she was referring to so I don’t add it lol
csaine 13 points 1y ago
The thing that gets me about the hacks is that it messes with our labor metrics. Corporate doesn't care at all as long as they spend money. But we get shafted on hours.
drinkliquidclocks 12 points 1y ago
It’s just so fucking annoying… I don’t care about Starbucks making money, it’s just that it makes our job harder. If you can’t afford Starbucks, don’t get Starbucks. It’s a luxury not a necessity
permanently_anxious 10 points 1y ago
My Nemesis is the matcha water when people think that they can just get charged for a cup of water with scoops of matcha as opposed to having to pay for a custom tea latte.
rnaggie53 10 points 1y ago
Some guy orders a caramel macchiato upside down with no drizzle. I tell him that’s a vanilla latte & he says “I know but it’s cheaper” 🙄 literally like 15 cents cheaper but makes our job so much harder.
Aurora_Boreallis 3 points 1y ago
How is it cheaper though. Like why Starbucks. Why?!
miss__nomer 1 points 1y ago
Why can't the drinks be the same price?? Like, all grande espresso drinks are 4.25, etc.
Ok_Leave1110 2 points 1y ago
This. It’s also insane to me that Starbucks doesn’t have an iced caramel latte. I have to customize my own and by the time I’m done it’s nearing 10 dollars for a venti. Meanwhile a macchiato with the same mods I want is about 2 bucks cheaper.
GwenZilly 9 points 1y ago
The thing that annoys me the most is when someone orders a venti ice coffee with no ice then a venti cup filled with ice on the side... then she had the audacity to ask for a short cup filled with malt powder on the side while she was picking up her "drinks" from the end of the bar. Screw you, lady!
Joranaxis 3 points 1y ago
Im sorry, FILLED??
GwenZilly 3 points 1y ago
Yup. I usually wouldn't care but she acted like an asshole... she was a dirty ass woman with long nails and a blinged out phone. Like, you're gonna pay to get your nails done (probably all the time) and are gonna be cheap with your drinks? Bro.
Joranaxis 2 points 1y ago
I just think the malt powder is gross is all 🤢🤢
starbiesslave28 1 points 1y ago
i dont like it on its own or with a drink, but try it in the vscf and it's actually really good!
GwenZilly 1 points 1y ago
Hah, that's fair. A lot of people don't like malt! I put a scoop of it in my brown sugar oatmilk shaken espresso and I love it
Dance_partyzone 9 points 1y ago
i am ALWAYS the first person to fight someone on this kinda thing. if you ordered a doppio, you ordered a doppio, just admit you wanted a latte and i’ll make you a latte :) i don’t care when people try to get drinks for cheaper i’ll even recommend a cheaper way when the customer is ordering to help them out but when they expect those hacks to work i just laugh, like really? you think you can outsmart a million dollar corp??? you would like to think you could.
ALSO that “hack” where you get a grande drink with no ice then order a venti cup of ice is so hilarious to me, you’re just getting a grande drink with extra ice, you didn’t actually get anything extra. they don’t understand ✨volume✨
ladyelenawf 5 points 1y ago
I was explaining under another comment that I order without ice because of my fillings. Occasionally the barista will offer the spare cup of ice so I can use it throughout the day. I thought it was so odd. I thanked them, but declined.

>you’re just getting a grande drink with extra ice, you didn’t actually get anything extra. they don’t understand ✨volume✨

There's a r/maliciouscompliance post where this lady was claiming they'd give her the wrong size (like a medium?) every time she got to the window so they'd give the next size up without charging her just to move her out of the window. After awhile OP got tired of this and started balking. Lady demands manager. Manager concedes. Then right there in from of the lady, grabs the bigger cup, dumps the drink into it, adds more ice until it's full, slaps a lid on it and hands it to her. Apparently the lady wasn't heard from again the rest of the time OP worked there.
nerdyoats 7 points 1y ago
I get if it's folks who are GENUINELY trying to save because they have very little money.

But a lot of the time the people who do this are all middle class moms who have nothing better to do.

When i see that they are trying to do this i just go "actually, I'll just do it as a latte for ya since it'll be more consistent and you'll get exactly what you are looking to get!" Every now and then i indulge them if it's a small thing, but those doppio in venti cup ones are not going under the radar for me.
Sad_Bar_6052 [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Agreed!!
cpv_91 7 points 1y ago
OP I, too, get irrationally pissed at these people and I think part of that is because deep down we know that when the siren continues to lose money to these hacks it's used as a way to justify not paying us better wages because 'they can't afford it'. Oh, they won't say it out loud but I'm sure it's discussed at the higher level as a way to justify not sharing their wealth.

The other part is why are we busting ass for such entitled, ungrateful, cheating, rude, spoiled, over-grown tantrum-throwing prone toddlers.
Secure_Marsupial_494 6 points 1y ago
I was told that you’re suppose to charge the milk if it’s over 4oz. That’s what I always tell the customer if they order like that 🤷🏽‍♀️
darkwolf523 6 points 1y ago
I’ll just charged them the regular price if it sounds like that drink
new_direction_ 6 points 1y ago
We used to have a regular who would order a no ice trenta pink drink and without fail, it was always "wrong." It was the wrong color, it didn't look right, it wasn't shaken enough because it started to separate after twenty minutes on the mobiles table. We would have to use two shakers, measure the base and the coconut milk to the top of the milk line on each, then pour and shake - my manager's method of trying to make it work for them. Still, every time, sent back.
estrellamontse 5 points 1y ago
Because although they are saving money- we as baristas are in a way being robbed. That money could have gone to hours our other things that could have benefited us.
Improvmomolyfe 5 points 1y ago
I have no problem explain to people the policy. But it just stung at the beginning of COVID when we had the condiment bar And people would just say that they would get the cream from the bar so why not make it like that?
Kayp22296 5 points 1y ago
I hate the “can I get a Trenta water with 3 scoops of fruit” people because they always complain about it being more than a dollar
Caffeineadick 3 points 1y ago
I got a talk with my ssv because two teenagers kept making me re make there drink, the pink drink with “not enough coconut milk” the sticker didn’t even say extra coconut:/ it happened three times my times were terrible and when I said don’t give them the mess ups after the second time they got mad? Like yes it’s a mess up but your not gonna get 6 free drinks for not enough milk.
skanklindroosevelt 3 points 1y ago
lmao my store would just charge people for a latte when they were doing shit like that
Hazel_is_Trans 3 points 1y ago
I just fill it to top it beats having a headache with customer whom yell at you at 5 am
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
I don’t work at Starbucks but frequent there often. Is there some generic saying you could disclose to them when they order. Something like we can make that but it’s probably not going to be what your thinking because … insert reason. Maybe if they realize before hand your calling them out on their shit it would help. Like I’ll make it but it’s gonna be F’d up and you won’t like it 😂
fyodors_anemia 2 points 1y ago
my thing is if you’re willing to spend $7 on a drink why try cheaping out now 😭
AffectionateSpray631 2 points 1y ago
I hate “I saw this on TikTok” drinks 🤦🏾‍♂️
Joranaxis 2 points 1y ago
I used to get really indignant about the stupid ways people would order things but after four years, you just kinda of stop caring. Don’t get me wrong, I still think they’re stupid and love laughing at the ridiculous ways people will try to cheat the system but getting mad isn’t worth it any more. Its infuriating the same way tripping over a flat surface is. You kind of roll your eyes and then go about your day pretending it never happened.

The coffee snob in me is still gonna get pissy if a customer orders a “cappuccino with no foam” though. That one never gets old. It’s not a hack, it just GETS MY GOAT.
nebulochaos 2 points 1y ago
And, of course, the shitheads who order half heavy cream, half whole milk frappes to skip on paying for breve or heavy cream.
Keithxmizu 2 points 1y ago
i’ve come to the conclusion that working this job you gotta be unbothered by everything
DieLawnUwU 2 points 1y ago
I had a mobile order sticker come through with the guys name with TRENTA in all caps next to it and it was a hot chocolate that he order. And I 100% did not put it in a trenta cup. I didn’t even make it cold
Beneficial-Weird-817 2 points 1y ago
Also when we don't make enough money, our hours get cut :')
TheGracieJay 1 points 1y ago
I only care when it makes my shift harder tbh, like Im never going to give someone less milk cus they asked for no ice, but making a doppio into a latte is so obnoxious, I dont know what youre asking for anymore Im going to get it wrong lol
According_Solid4792 1 points 1y ago
Doesn’t piss me off because I don’t care. I don’t get paid enough to care, plus Starbucks will be okay if it doesn’t grab that extra dollar off customers
Local-Refuse2270 1 points 1y ago
Actually I don't mind giving people little extra milk and no ice drinks. It doesn't come out of my paycheck you know. But if they are being bitchy about it, maybe that's the only time I will be petty too.

!!hack for light ice or no ice in refreshers!!
light ice: make the liquids in the size above it and then fill the ice to the right ice line (eg. grande light ice- follow venti lines for liquids but ice to grande line
no ice: base to the top of the water/milk line and milk to top of the ice line (grandes-you can also follow the trenta lines but just not add ice for the exact ratios but otherwise its very close)
Myebix 8 points 1y ago
i think the point was that we don't have clear markers for where that sits/aren't told. I figured out what any possible ratio is even just on the cup w a little dicking around, but not everyone has done that.
amalia13lightning 6 points 1y ago
you can still pour it into the shaker and measure.
Myebix 1 points 1y ago
the shakers don't really have clear measurements for anything other than regular ice, we kinda just have to guess on where to stop pouring lol
