why do i get my first 10 one hour into an 8 hour shift?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by treebaby4200
i totally understand having to stack the breaks so everyone can get one in, but i started my shift at 6 am and got my first ten BEFORE peak at 7 am. now i have to go another three hours before my meal….makes the shift hella slow.

My old store did this a lot when we didn't have enough people to run the floor during peak. Managment encourages shifts to take lunches before 6am and try to get breaks out early so that everyone is on the floor during peak and everyone is forced to gutt through peak like a robot instead of hiring enough people staf accordingly. It's one of those little ethical lines they like to blur and yet another fantastic reason yall should vote to unionize.

i would unionize, i suggested it, but after my manager worked with a positive covid test and i was put on oven three shifts in a row, i put in my two weeks 😂

Whenever I work with one specific supervisor, she sticks me on register for an entire 5.75 hour shift and gives me my 10 after an hour. I want to die by the end.

Say something to them on you way back from your half "Hey, I've been on reg all morning, any chance you could put me on bar?"

That shift sucks-try talking to your SM
iiiimagery3 points1y ago
Yeah I have this issue with a specific SM, if my store manager is there or another shift that's really nice I'll ask for a 5 minute break because I have issues with my feet

If you’re opening this is very common unfortunately
SportsChick797 points1y ago
Exactly what I was going to say. I open, in at 5, my 10 is usually between 6:10 and 6:20. I leave at 10:45 (typically)

You guys are getting two tens?
imathrowayslc3 points1y ago
If you are not getting two 10s on a shift that should have them talk to your SM, if that fails your DM. This is standard and if it is not being followed and the DM will not help contact the PCC.

I don’t think any store in our district does two tens.… I mean I’ve only covered at four different stores, but regardless of SSV or store it’s always just been one ten and a thirty for a shift that’s 6 hours or more.
imathrowayslc4 points1y ago
Check the DCR, they should be scheduled as I believe the scheduling system forces them for the applicable shifts. I would still go the SM->DM->PCC route if to address.
When I transferred stores as a shift the store I transferred to did not give second 10's. I had no idea until a barista told me that I was the only shift to ever give them. I sat down the the SM and had a conversation and it was addressed once the SM understood the following:
1. This is SB policy (this is really all that matters). 2. Studies have shown that workers who have appropriate breaks are more productive and have higher moral. 3. Higher moral = better CC scores.

Well thank you! I have my PDP with our new SM tomorrow, so I’ll be sure to bring that up.

Breaks are dependent on local labor laws. There is no company standard
BlackberryOpposite311 points1y ago
That’s not true the company does say that you have a 10 for any shift under 6 hours. If it’s 6 hours exactly you get a 10 and a 30. If it’s more than 7 hours you get two 10s and a 30.
coffeegirrrl1 points1y ago
And see, that's the local labor laws where you are. Where I am, we get 1 ten for 3.5 hours. 1 ten and 1 30 if we work 5 to 6 hours. And 2 tens and 1 30 of we work 6.5+. The company only goes by local labor laws. It varies all across the country.

What I’ve been told is that you’re allowed to have 2 tens but it’s not that it’s not required to give you one. So if you ask for a second one they can’t tell you no. How my store does it is morning shift people ALWAYS get 2 tens but night shift people have to ask for their second 10 if they need one.

My manager will send your lunch 2 hours in on an 8 hour shift
legoshis2 points1y ago
i have a shift who as soon as she comes on, give me my lunch super early, even if it’s only been like 45 minutes-1 hour after my first 10. no one else does this except her, i’m not sure how to approach her about it
imathrowayslc2 points1y ago
"Hey I just got my 10 45 minutes ago, any chance I could wait on my half?"
legoshis3 points1y ago
true, i’m just nervous to ask bc she’s pretty standoffish and seems to not like me for some reason, but i’ll try to say this!
iiiimagery2 points1y ago
I have this issue too. We talked about it but I don't feel like anything changed so idk what to do
i_slipped-1 points1y ago
That’s weird, when I work 8 hour shifts I get my first 10, 2 hours in and I’m a minor.
puppieswearinghats1 points1y ago
They probably respect your break/lunch timing because you’re a minor and the law is more strict about underage people in the workplace
