Tips question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by whalepie666
So i asked my shift how often we are supposed to be getting tips and she said weekly. i got tips 2 weeks ago but didn’t this week. when i got my tips my shift told me that i have some tips and handed me the money. this week i saw a sheet that had the amount of money people are going to get for the hours they work but i didn’t get any this week. i’ve only been working here for a few weeks so i’m confused. i heard that they store unclaimed tips in a safe if you’re not there when they count them but i don’t know if that’s true or not. do they just not give out tips if you’re not there that day? i’m confused

My store does tips Monday/Tuesday and stores them in a drawer. We each have a panini bag with our names on it, the tips stay in the bag until you take them out and sign them. I feel as though each store has their own way of doing it. Maybe ask your sm the routine?

Nobody passes them out at my store we just ask the shift to open the safe when we remember and get them then. Every once in a while if the shift is opening the safe anyways theyll go ahead and make an announcement and ask if anyone wants to come grab theirs, but other than that its on us to ask for them

Regardless of how each store might 'do' their tips (I've done tips for years and for 2 different stores), they should separate each person's tips into a bag/envelope with their name on it, with the date and amount contained inside. There should also be a sheet available for that week with the hours being tipped, which should show a total next to your name where you can initial when you receive your tips.

If this is not being done, please speak either with the person doing the tips to clarify their procedure and/or your SM. Don't be afraid to speak up. This is part of your income, you have every right to know where and how your money is being accounted for.

I am very transparent in how I do tips in my store. I write down at the bottom of the sign off sheet the total $ we took in, the total hours we worked, and the hourly average we made that week. Everyone can verify my math if there is ever a discrepancy.

I hope this helps.

And OP this is Starbucks Standard. I always check my tip sheet and make sure my partners check the amount, count it, and intial. Not because I don't trust the person who does tips (she's fantastic and we appreciate her very much) but also people make mistakes sometimes and this to me leads to financial freedom

Yeah, as a green bean I didn’t know to ask for tips and had 6 weeks worth sitting there. We can get our weekly tips on Tuesday afternoon and forward, so since I open most Wednesdays, my opening SSV gives them to me while she has the safe open already

one question related: how are tips earned exactly? because when I was new, I know I definitely worked more hours than some partners, but they earned more than me :?
interyx 4 points 1y ago
They should be counted and added up, then the total amount of money is divided by the total hours worked by all partners that week to make an hourly rate. Then you'll get your rate * hours worked in cash after payroll has processed, usually Monday or Tuesday. There should be a sheet with rate, hours and payout with the tips you can check.

Did you ask your supervisor and they said you didn’t receive any? Usually partners who aren’t there when they’re distributing tips on Tuesday have to ask a supervisor to get them out of the safe.

This was ages ago, but the way all the stores around ours did it more or less the less the same:

We sorted and rolled all the coin, changed them for cash, calculated and separated per partner. They were kept in a separate locker (padlocked, shifts know the combo) and everyone signed off upon receipt of tips. We did a spreadsheet to calculate and everything was transparent, and it was always different pairs of leads counting the money.
