This is in NYC

so just to paint the full picture, at any point during and after or before my hiring and onboarding nothing about a penalty system or probation was mentioned at all! I didnt even know about it until i commited my first “offense”

I called in sick because i was feeling very feverish and was coughing and sneezing a lot, i called the store to tell them im sick and cant come in today (this was the only thing ever mentioned, if youre sick you have to call the store and tel them, and it was mentioned during some chit chat with the other partners while i was still new. Later i find out my manager says im at 2 points penalty wise because im not actually allowed to take a sick day at all (even if i really am sick) during the first thirty days of working, this was the first time i even realized starbucks has this sort of penalty system, the other point that got me to 3 points total which is usually met with separation (according to my asm) was when i was 5 minutes late because the subway i was on stopped for maintenance and to let the police do a security check or whatever, i instantly texted my asm and told her this may cause me to be 5 minutes late and its out of my control, i ended up getting there exactly 5 minutes late, was later told during my shift being late for more than 5 minutes is a point towards the penalty thing, she said we should speak to the person that hired and onboarded me to see if i was out of my probational periodor not it. It seems now she is hesitant about seperaion even when she claims its “health code violation to not separate me” i genuinely dont know what to do here, i work hard there and put in effort to learn and get better at being a starbucks barista, i cover for my tesm whenever i can just so they dont have to be shortstaffed and ive been frequently having to punch 30 mins to an hour after my scheduled time ends due to having to stay and do closing work which takes us a while sometimes. I was already depresed about other things and this just seems like another thing to add to the pile, i wanted to do my bachelors through asu so my parents wouldnt have to suffer just to pay my tuiton. Im not even thirty days in, do i quit before they fire me if they decide to? Do i just let them? I never had to deal with anything like this before

Tldr; took a sick day when i was sick during my first thirty days as a new hire, later find out im not allowed any sick days during the first thirty days and got penalized for it, other instance where im late 5 minutes due to something out of control, now my asm just says i might be separated because the subway train decided to unexpectedly stop for 15 minutes.

I do not know if this system, but I’m in FL. ASM seems on a power trip

I would definitely contact your DM and if they are not helpful then partner services. You were correct to not come to work sick with a fever and should not be penalized. As for the 5 minutes late, it should not be a habit but it is within an 'acceptable' time. (We had an opening partner who was late 20-30 minutes per shift for almost a year and our then manager did absolutely nothing about it.)

I've been a partner for 16+ years and have never heard of a point system.

My advise still stands.

Especially the part about being sick with a fever in today's covid world.

Have you spoke with the actual SM about this?

Good luck

Let me add that language that includes “point system, probation period, strikes,…” is toxic and we do not need that in our partners trusted with leadership positions.
Complex_Imagination9 2 points 1y ago
“1, 2, 3 Strikes” would require coaching. Have you been coached about being late? Have they offered to help you accommodate your schedule so you’re not late going forward? About being sick, we are still in a pandemic, stores literally closed entirely because people were ill. I would seek clarification from your DM, because how can you be separated without paper trail of your “strikes”? It seems a manager is on a power trip

bro i’m sorry this is happening. that’s such bullshit. i started working in january and had to call leave early my second week after i puked one morning. my SM was so sweet about it and just told me to go home and take care of myself. he’s also been incredibly understanding by giving me a bit of a grace period to show up to work as i live an hour away in a really isolated place lol. your ASM just seems like a douche who let waaaay to much power go to their head

You need to escalate this. This is not normal Starbucks behavior. Go to your SM, DM, and then partner resources. I was hired last year, and there was no mention of a probationary period.

i would find out who your dm is and contact them. if there’s anyone your sm is afraid of it’s your dm.

It is ridiculous to not be able to take sick days. That’s literally what they’re there for. You can call partner resources or talk to your DM

Health code violation??? That sounds like complete BS. Why would the health department give a shit that you were 5 minutes late??
Did you have a sore throat along with that fever, cough, and sneezing? If you went in, they would need to send you home as working with sore throat and fever is a health code violation. Also if you are vomiting, have jaundice, diarrhea, or infections on your hands, you should not be handling food.

I've never heard of the point system for starbucks and I'm shift.

Uh I’m in nyc, I never heard of such system. U can call partner resources. They can give u verbal and written warning, nothing to extreme as in firing. Also, Starbucks is short staffed. They won’t waste time to hire someone, train them fully just or fire them. Like u needa punch someone, sexually harassed someone, or steal money to get separated.

If this is a corporate store, there is no such penalty point system. Please contact the Partner Resources Contact Center and Business Ethics and Compliance!

The solution is to work at a unionized Starbucks

I'm on the west coast and have never heard anything like this before
