Starbucks in Ithaca has gone on strike. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by vaguely_articulate
The Starbucks on college Avenue in Ithaca has gone on strike due to a grease trap in the back room leaking burned grease that smells disgusting and can be smelt by the customers in the cafe.

Management refused to close the store to fix the grease trap, and insisted on keeping the store open despite the health hazard, and the employees (myself included) walked out and started striking.

This store is unionized and has been dealing with starbucks aggressively trying to unionbust us, along with having to deal with an incompetent temporary manager who bullies the baristas and makes uneducated decisions without consulting the shifts for advice. This health risk has been the last straw for the vast majority of the employees working there.

Anybody at the store can submit a work order for the grease trap, including baristas. Nobody’s stopping you!

I am the person who led the strike on Saturday. We have submitted so many tickets about this grease trap. They have come multiple times over the years. My first day at the store for years ago they warned me about the smell. I would have not asked my fellow organizers to walk out over something we hadn't even put a ticket in for yet.

As the original poster said, we are pretty sure it isn't even something that is connected to our store, just in it. And it overflowed. There was grease trap water filled with floating debris all over back room. I texted and called the manager. He told me we were to stay open and to clean it, because it didn't look that bad.

Nobody stopped us from putting in a work order, but nobody fix this problem we've had for years. And it's only one of many. So we walked out. And guess what, the work order I put in that day had a priority to that was going to be fixed on Monday. They came to fix it two hours into our strike.

Organizing works.

The sm doesn’t approve tickets. Just put one in.

Just log in on the iPad and submit a ticket if it’s that much of a concern.

There are stores with grease traps?? For what reason?

I believe it was a left over from a restaurant that was at this location before the Starbucks was here.
