The Customer Is Not Always Right (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by customerisnotright
What's the worst thing a customer ever did to you while wearing the green apron?

I'm trying to collect a few testimonies for a book I'm writing called The Customer Is Not Always Right.

Would love to add some great testimonies to the book.

Thanks!!

1. Told me they have an appointment they need to get to and they’re upset that their mobile order was taking so long but I had never gotten a sticker for their order so she either A. Didn’t order or B. Sent it to a different store 😀
2. Told me that her drink wasn’t sweet enough so I remade it the exact same way as before and this time it was ‘perfect’ 😊
3. 100% did not ask for cream in her coffee at the register, at handout exclaimed ‘WELL WHY ISNT THETE CREAM IN IT’ and mobile bar guy goes ‘well you have to ask for it at the register’ and she said ‘YEAH I DID’ 🥰🥰🥰
4. Ordered coffee, 3 hours later comes back through drive through claiming he ‘spilled his coffee’ and wanted a new one :) bestie it’s been 3 hours you finished that coffee

Customers will lie. Thanks! Adding this to the book (:

These aren’t horrible, just annoyances…Two things come to mind, both related to Mobile Order and Pay (MOP):

1: Customers frequently send their orders to an incorrect store/forget to press “finish and pay.” They arrive and their order isn’t ready for the obvious reason. We ask them to verify in their app while we check our own system. Most happily comply, but a few get angry, insisting that they sent it through. When they get angry, I then tell them that it’s not in our system, so they mustn’t’ve sent through correctly, but I’ll still make it for them if they show me the receipt. They’ll insist that I’m wrong, and I’ll ask for the receipt so I can see what they ordered and make it. They’ll angrily pull out their phones and show me their receipt, which I’ll then inform them that they either sent it to the wrong store or that they never actually finalized their transaction.

2: MOP customers telling me that I made their drink incorrectly. Often this is when they wanted a larger size than what they ordered or they ordered something hot instead of iced or vice versa. Again, they’ll insist that “I ordered a venti, not a grande!” which I’ll verify their name order, then show them the sticker with their name on it that clearly says “Grande” or whatever mistake they made on it.

Them: I wanted a grande. It’s a large. This is not a large!

Me: grande is a medium. You can say medium.

Them: well I wanted a large.

Me: lemme charge the difference for you.

Them: never mind

Them: I paid for a venti.

Me: btch look at the ticket. It says grande.

Them: storms out

Them: is it too late to change it to a non dairy milk?

Me: alrdy steaming the milk, yes

Them: can I still change it?

Me: if u pay for it.

Them: 🙄

They always wanna pay less by cheating

1) A woman came in, ordered a banana nut loaf, and when I handed her her change back she insisted it was wrong and that none of our baristas could understand basic math because the labels in the pastry case hadn't had their prices updated. I was simply giving her back the change the register told me to, and tried to explain that our prices had gone up, with several coworkers chiming in to back me up. She demanded her money back and said she was going to another Starbucks, convinced that we were doing this specifically to spite her. Wonder how that worked out for her.

2) An extremely drunk woman came in, her hair a mess and makeup smeared all over her face, ordered a drink, and when it was handed back to her said "oh by the way I wanted six shots" and then gave the barista instructions the whole time they were making the drink (this didn't happen to me specifically but I witnessed it, cops were called on her because she had no business driving out our parking lot intoxicated)

3) There's one particular man who kept coming around who we called "Moses", and I can name THREE different incidents with him. Once he handed me his phone and demanded I ask the person on the other end for directions??? And he had called a number that wasn't even located in our city. Another time he was found dancing around our parking lot after hours setting bushes and his jacket on fire. Called the cops on him twice that night. Most recently we called the cops on him because he was hanging around the store being visibly intoxicated, and randomly just taking off his shirt. When he got searched the police pulled a whole empty bottle of fireball out of his back pocket. He is now banned from our store lol

I like to think that woman kept going to different Starbucks locations until she eventually ran out

me too, I wonder how long it took her to realize lmao

Left her credit card in the drive thru and demanded we deliver it to her an hour away and that I should be fired. I just picked up the phone 😩😩

1. Customer insists that Frappuccino’s can come as hot drinks (they aren’t talking about lattes or anything). Somehow a blended drink can be served hot

2. We can heat up any food item (ex. Iced lemon loaf)

3. After repeating orders to people (especially sizes of drinks), they complain that they ordered the larger size

4. We serve medicine because we have the “medicine ball”
purpleelephant77 2 points 1y ago
I refuse to say medicine ball, when I repeat back the order I always say honey citrus mint tea just to be a pedantic dick.

Yesterday, a guy came in twice ordering a venti cold brew. First time, he wanted more cream and told us we made it wrong. We corrected him on the standards and added a bit more cream in the drink. He was still an ass, but he left. A few hours later, he comes back and orders it again. I make it this time, not realizing it was him, but I am going to go ahead and state that I am kinda a stickler for the standard. I'll add extra if a person asks nicely, but I do my best to measure everything out right the first time as it was ordered. This guy immediately starts complaining about how it is wrong. He wanted extra cream, and I had put a little over 3/4", as we are supposed to. My GF was working drive and was trying to calm him down by nodding along, but he decided to make a point of leaning closer to the window so he could yell loudly enough for me to hear him at Bar 1, a good yard or so away. "Who taught you how to make drinks?!" I usually try not to be confrontational with customers, but he kept badgering me, so I told him that we made our drinks to corporate standard and could show him the recipe to prove him wrong. He was being such a dick and just kept insulting us, telling us that other stores give him what he wants. My GF remade his drink as light as he wanted, and, when I realized the amount was over half the cup, I called the shift lead to explain to this guy that he would have to pay an upcharge next time. He kept screaming at us until the shift got there, and then he carried on insulting her. He said that we didn't know how to do our jobs and that he wouldn't want to come back. Our shift said, too politely imo, that maybe he shouldn't come back if he really thought the standards we use are not good for him. I hope he finds out he is lactose intolerant.

Lost_Treat_6296 8 points 1y ago
Oh yeah for sure

Customer told us we made a drink wrong w/ too much ice. No problem, we spoon out some ice and add some acai. Then she loses her shit. Starts telling us that what we did was illegal (spooning out the ice and not remaking the whole thing), violated health codes, that she "knows a district manager"... All over us spooning out ice and adding more acai to her drink.. (drivethru btw, she didn't see us remove the ice)

We have the sign cups at our store, which feature the sign LINK. This can mean connection, like internet connection (lmao pretty common with the students I work with that are lower in my program), or to connect with someone, or to show things that are physically or theoretically linked. Lots of uses, right? We feature a cup in the drive through because they're almost always gone within the week. (Lots of Deaf people near my store! It's good practice).

So, I'm working the window and a customer is waiting for her drink, and she looks at the mug confused, and asks me if it's "that white supremacist sign". I politely laugh and tell her, no, it's Deaf art by a Deaf artist that's done fantastic murals and digital art at Gallaudet University, and also happens to be a Chinese immigrant. It's very clear that this middle aged woman that hasn't met a Deaf person in her LIFE- she keeps on making pointed comments about it while I'm just doing what my sm would want and trying to connect with her. Finally, her drinks are finished and I practically throw them out the window, and she has the GALL to say to me, "well, you just can't be too careful..."

I hate some customers, but my two Deaf coworkers got a good laugh out of it when I told them later.

Once, I was on POS and it was pretty slow at the time, but some guy came in and ordered a pike with a couple sugars. I started to make it and he straight up yelled at me and called me disgusting because I just touched his money (he used Apple Pay) and now I was roughing his coffee. There were a few shifts in the floor and I was still pretty new, and they could all hear him yelling at me, so they came over to try and help. They told him that it was standard for POS to get the brewed coffee. They even offered to have the person on bar make it for him if it was really that big of a problem, but he kept yelling at me and the shifts. He left and I think he ended up calling our DM.

customer asked for a coffee bean at the bottom of his coffee. stated that is how they drink it in parts of europe, the coffee bean at the bottom of the cup so it gives off more flavor when you get to the end of the cup. asked if it was chocolate covered - no, just normal espresso bean.

okay.

told them it wasn't possible to keep the bean at the bottom of the cup how he wanted.

he went on to tell me he gets it ALL the time, and maybe we don't know how to do it because we're not a real coffee house. the ones in europe can do it no problem.

told him: "but, coffee beans float. right?"

Huge mistake.

he yelled "just give me a damned cup of coffee!" and "try and do at least something right in your life!" and "get a real job!"

guess physics are just different at other coffee houses and in europe.

never got a real job, or didn't anything right in my life. however, did give him a damned cup of coffee. Decaf.

Customer orders an *iced Matcha* latte with cold foam, etc. *Complains that it's green*, so we end up remaking the drink as a chai.
Customer orders whipped cream ON TOP of the cold foam
Curious_Ask_1454 5 points 1y ago
Today a customer refused to take his VSC cold brew because it had “bubbles” in it. It was just a bit of foam from the keg spitting (we’ve been having issues with the system lately and it likes to spit a tiny bit of foam randomly.) I called out this guys drink and he said “Oh I don’t want that. Not with those bubbles. Nope. No thanks. They’ve given me that crap before at other stores and I won’t drink it.” I explained that it was just slightly foamy from the keg and that it wasn’t enough to affect the taste or quality of the drink. He was so rude and insisted that he wouldn’t touch it. So I dumped it out and started remaking the drink and then he raised his voice and told me to “use a new cup because that cup was already ruined.” I wanted so bad to yell at the top of my lungs that IT WAS JUST COLD BREW BUBBLES. Customers have gotten so rude and entitled lately. The rude ones just think they are so much better than us.
Curious_Ask_1454 4 points 1y ago
also had a woman tell me once that she would bet that my dad is ashamed of me because I had to ask her to leave for being racist and mocking two customers repeatedly. 😇

Asked for a salted caramel cf cb with sccf on the side so she could add it herself right and then had us make her a completely different drink because “there was no foam on the drink” i literally rang her out in cafe and that’s what she wanted so since we can’t take the cups back we had to remake her another one 🙃
