Got yelled at for making a drink correctly :D(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by borrowedurmumsvcard
Standards are there for a reason. please make drinks to standard.
I just got told off by a woman who was upset that her brown sugar shaken espresso was too dark. I handed it out and she said “WHYS IT SO DARK”
“oh I’m sorry I made it to standard, *gestures to a picture of it on our menu board*, did you want extra oatmilk?”
“I GET THIS ALL THE TIME AT MY STARBUCKS AND ITS THAT COLOR.”
*points to our stir sticks*
“um, honestly im pretty sure the other starbucks is making it wro-“
“CAN YOU PUT CARAMEL DRIZZLE IN THERE TOO. MORE OAT MILK AND CARAMEL DRIZZLE AND EXTRA ICE”
*me absolutely dumbfounded as to why her starbucks is making it with so much oat milk, and also how im supposed to fit extra ice, extra oatmilk, and 4 shots of espresso in this cup*
PLEASE MAKE THINGS TO STANDARD. IF THERES AN INCH OR MORE OF ROOM AT THE TOP, IT NEEDS MORE ICE. A BSOSE SHOULD NOT LOOK LIKE A LATTE. WHEN YOU MAKE THINGS WRONG, BARISTAS AT OTHER STORES SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES
Edit: $1 is what a brown sugar oatmilk should look like. when stirred together it should be about the color of the foam on the top
$1 is how light she wanted it and claimed how the other starbucks made it
also if you feel “personally attacked,” simply make the drink correctly. if you do already, you shouldn’t feel personally attacked.
cats_with_tentacles144 points1y ago
Lol people feeling yelled at by text on a screen. Let a girl rant, I'm tired of having this convo with customers too
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]51 points1y ago
thank you.
Lucent-Singularity100 points1y ago
YES. THIS. I'VE BEEN SAYING THIS ever since the drink came out !! it's not SUPPOSED to look as light as a latte, that defeats the whole damn point of the drink (shaken ESPRESSO, as in, that should be the main component lmao)... I'm not really one to care about losing Starbucks some extra cents worth of oatmilk or whatever, but actively ignoring drink standards just makes things harder for customers and baristas everywhere!! make drinks properly and people WON'T complain that drinks look or taste "off" all the time, it's that simple LOL
BatWeary39 points1y ago
people are mad because you’re right, lmao. i add +1 size (so grande BOSE = venti scoop of ice) of ice when making a shaken espresso—every time i have about 1/4”-1/2” of room at MOST (given it’s a SE with reg ice. i obviously adjust amount of ice depending on light/extra). and if i realize i put too much ice…i simply dump some out. people literally just don’t care enough because it’s “not that serious” (even though it causes problems for other baristas bc of inconsistency).
i refuse to get a shaken espresso unless either i’m the one making it, or certain people from my store make it. i’ve gotten the equivalent of a brown sugar oat latte too many times.
sunflowercupcakee21 points1y ago
I absolutely hate getting shaken espressos that have so much milk it tastes like a latte. I just want that dash of oat milk and taste my espresso. At my store, everyone usually forgets the cinnamon or puts way too much milk. The customers never get a consistent shaken beverage.
philosopher_cat_lady2 points1y ago
I often get cinnamon added at the end. No, thank you
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]12 points1y ago
that’s exactly what i do too. thank you. I have no idea why i’m getting attacked for wanting people to make a drink correctly but whatever
thebestdaysofmyflerm3 points1y ago
How is it making the drink correctly to use the wrong ice scoop?
BatWeary8 points1y ago
because if you use the correct scoop and fill to the appropriate size line, by the time you add the espresso and shake it melts 50% of the ice. you would have to add more ice after pouring into the cup so it’s not 50% milk. adding extra ice to the shaker leaves the right amount of room for milk.
melodiic_1 points1y ago
i also add extra ice to mine because i love espresso-forward drinks, but easiest way to avoid the ice melting so fast is to follow standards and add ice After the espresso. so it would be syrup/flavor > espresso > ice > shake 10+ times :) hope this helps!

TheOnesLeftBehind6 points1y ago
Standard is to fill it to the correct cup size on the shaker, not to rely on the scoops. It was in a weekly update a few months ago I believe.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Got in an argument with my coworker about this one! She hadn't been reading the Weekly Updates, apparently
astivana11 points1y ago
I saw a coworker pour the shaken espresso on top of a cup of already poured milk. Bonus, when I reacted in horror, he said it didn’t matter and remade it with so little ice and so much milk that yeah, I guess it didn’t matter what order he put the milk in.
Dangitkayla8 points1y ago
literally same and my coworkers think i put too much ice. but like iced espresso drinkers and I do not want half the drink with milk
twinpeaksfiles4 points1y ago
no but some customers will yell at you that its too much ice and then they dont want room so you can win with this drink
philosopher_cat_lady2 points1y ago
I used to do the same thing because I care about beverage quality. Starbucks cares about speed though and has changed the standard for the drink. They have realized the drink has a bad recipe and also is just an inconsistent drink since shots pull at different times and ice cubes are different shapes and have just said to fill up the cup with milk.

Yes!! We had someone YELL at us because the shaken espresso she got had foam. From the shaking. She said the other store never put foam on it. I said “ma’am a shaken espresso gets shaken, if you don’t get foam with it, they’re not shaking it”
She started saying we were making it wrong and how dare we have the audacity to argue with her, remake it right now etc and we gave her a latte. she was satisfied with a latte.
persona-223 points1y ago
Thank you. I hate ordering at other stores. I like my coffee really espresso forward. I hate when it’s all oat and since I’m a partner I feel too bad to ask for a remake.
philosopher_cat_lady3 points1y ago
I know that feeling! Just specify while you're ordering that you want light oat milk, extra ice
cookiemonstah872 points1y ago
But then if you order light oatmilk and they make it correctly, it'll have too little oatmilk. People should just make it correctly
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
The problem is that the correct way now is to put a lot of oatmilk. They specified that in a Weekly Update
ihateyousoymatcha3 points1y ago
The standard is to fill the cup, but if there is excessive room it should be filled with more ice before the oat milk.
A big factor in this is our shaken espressos are offered as lower calorie drinks, and adding extra oatmilk when it isn't ordered changes the ratio s
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
That's the thing. I read it as "make it the same way you have been, it only gets 1/2" of oatmilk if made normally, but if someone orders light ice, you don't leave room anymore." And if people are interpreting that differently, that's a problem. I feel like they need to make a training video for shaken espressos at this point
jelizt1 points1y ago
I always just tell them light on the milk if I’m at another store politely if course
acnh122219 points1y ago
I mixed up “stir stick” and “stopper” when you were saying what color the customer wanted it and I was like “aren’t the stir sticks GREEN?? Oh wait those are the stoppers”
because_reasons___2 points1y ago
I had the same thought. Like how on earth would a brown sugar shaken espresso turn green, then also realized I mixed up “stopper” and “stir stick”
twinpeaksfiles16 points1y ago
sometimes customers just want to argue though… but yes it bothers me when some stores put cinnamon powder on top bc i have gotten yelled at bc theres no cinnamon powder sprinkled on top.. like bruh they just forgot to put the cinnamon in so they put it on top it does not come like that
EmotionalPie715 points1y ago
I just posted about this the other day. I got mine looking exactly like that picture and thought it was wrong. So I posted here to ask. Turns out, that was the first time I had the drink made correctly. Every other time it's been all mixed and looked like a latte.
lunarmadz15 points1y ago
The problem is customers have no clue what they’re ordering either and basically expect a latte. I make mine with a scoop plus 1 of ice as well and then people (including my manager) who prefer more oat milk will constantly ask for more milk. You really can’t win with this stupid drink. LOL
uwumoment11 points1y ago
i would have told her to stir it with her straw and been super nice about it so she realizes she’s stupid. it’s my favorite thing to do, watching them realize their own mistake
Hoax_Pudding_Cup8 points1y ago
Fun fact, I actually add MORE ice after I pour the drink in the cup. It's called a shaken espresso, not a latte, therefore, ice to the top. If you get light ice, expect your cup to have "normal" ice, like a latte. Some people man.
deadsunprojectt7 points1y ago
people have no idea what the shaken espressos are supposed to look like or how foam physics work and always make it my problem
cookiemonstah872 points1y ago
The foam physics are the hard one for me. People will mobile order shaken espressos and then not pick them up for so long that the foam bubbles all pop. Then there's an inch of room in the cup and they get all pissy like we're trying to cheap out on them.
On the other hand, people getting sweet cream cold foam on top tend to not like how it looks when the espresso foam mixes with the cold foam, but I don't have time to teach them about fluid dynamics and the fact that the denser cold foam tries to sink under the more airy espresso foam...
RareLingonberry7 points1y ago
Absolutely sick of customers coming in and complaining that their correct drinks are wrong because other locations don’t make them right. Today a woman yelled at us for not putting classic in her refresher because her regular Starbucks always does it. Last week a customer complained about her caramel macchiato having syrup in it because it “has never come with syrup anywhere else”.
aspiringgrandpa6 points1y ago
honestly i don’t get it when people yell about it being dark or not mixed like bruh you get the milk poured on top, just a little, fucking understand what you’re ordering before you order it
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
I like to explore new things and often order things when I don't know what they are. The difference is I'm not about to tell the people who make the thing on a daily basis that they did it wrong when this is the first time I've ever ordered it...
dankmobile6 points1y ago
i understand your sentiment of saying “if you feel attacked, simply make the drink correctly.” i agree that people shouldn’t be offended by a reddit post lol, but i’ve heard 4 different ways to make shaken espressos since starting as a barista a month ago. still not really sure how to avoid it being so milky, i guess just extra ice?
cats_with_tentacles9 points1y ago
Shake the dickens out of it if you aren't getting enough foam. I was bring too gentle at first but you want to see foam
dankmobile4 points1y ago
i shake it hard, usually ending up with about an inch of foam, then i pour milk to the top. i think what’s happening is if I’m using the right size scoop of ice, shaking the hot espresso melts it and makes less ice actually in the cup, i.e more milk
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
I usually end up with an inch or less (depending on cup size) of space between the foam and the top of the cup. If I have less than that, I add more ice before I add the milk.

Necessary_Low9393 points1y ago
Ok not sure why I got downvoted.
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]4 points1y ago
me neither
[deleted]5 points1y ago
I refuse to make anything not to standard if it isn’t ordered that way. I won’t fill iced espressos to the top, I won’t go against the rule. Not because I’m “petty”, but if you don’t order your drinks correctly, then don’t expect them to come out how you want them. Don’t expect baristas to memorize who you are and that you order your coffee wrong everyday so to accommodate for you. Order it right, it will be made right.
Emotional_Laugh_3225 points1y ago
We had a lady mobile order a venti shaken espresso with vsccf, she waited almost half an hour before picking it up and then said it didn’t have foam on it. Ma’am I ensure you, there was all kinds of foam in this drink before it sat at the counter forever.
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
I always love trying to explain this to people.... /s
Super_Pickle274 points1y ago
I am a former partner, now regular customer. My go-to order is a quad espresso with a flavor syrup and light cream. I cry every time I’m made what looks like a half and half latte 🥲 but it happens because of this exact customer. Ugh my heart.
PerspectiveCapable983 points1y ago
This isn’t related at all but This lady ordered an americano and asked for it to be shaken we did that and she was confused why it tasted like water💀 like she only wanted a double in a trenta so like everyone was just confused when she said she gotten it before and it was different later we found out she was referring to a regular shaken esp.
Prudent_Preparation13 points1y ago
ppl go stupid when u don’t put more oatmilk in the bev. “i paid $9 for this can i have more milk” the milk isn’t even the expensive part of the drink bud whatever
bonersz2 points1y ago
this. if the espresso melts the ice when you shake it, add a lil more ice after you pour it into the cup. the milk should sit on top of the espresso.
ihateyousoymatcha2 points1y ago
Agreed! The standard is to fill the cup but if there is excessive room it should be filled with more ice before the oat milk.
Especially as our shaken espressos are offered as lower calorie drinks, and adding extra oatmilk when it isn't ordered throws that out the window.
Unless they order it light ice, we actually started using the next size up ice scoop
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]1 points1y ago
yes same!
im_a_pimp2 points1y ago
no no you’re right and you should say it!!!!
dazedinreverse2 points1y ago
We've had a lady call the store after getting home to say there was too much ice in her brown sugar shaken. My shift supervisor answered the call and told us that we made it perfectly but may need to remake it if she comes back in and told the girl how to order it with light ice next time 🙄
-Zispy2 points1y ago
Thank you. I completely agree and hate when I get it and it just tastes like milk. It’s supposed to have that strong espresso flavor
Imaginarybluntallday2 points1y ago
My manager is trying to have my store go against standards for numerous things and this right here is why I’m so against it!!!!!!!

melodiic_1 points1y ago
??? upside down CM isn't gonna have layers though? most folks order it that way so it's all mixed together. the only way i can think that you could get layers upside down is if you did espresso > ice > milk which is just not the correct way and messes with the proportions lmao
kristis32332 points1y ago
Favorite line of the day (Well at my Starbucks).
drinkliquidclocks2 points1y ago
I wonder if some lazy people build it in the cup instead of shaking it, or they don’t put enough ice. The recipe is so easy how do you fuck it up…
Ok-Mycologist90111 points1y ago
I got told I was ridiculous once bc it “wasn’t made right” and I offered her more oatmilk… still don’t know what she actually wanted from me 🤣
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Actually, Starbucks has changed their standard on iced shaken espressos. However much room you end up with, you're supposed to fill up the cup with milk. Apparently, this was in a Weekly Update.
So this confusion is just going to continue.
boxinghamster162 points1y ago
Came here to say this. It literally says on the card to add milk up to a quarter inch from the top of the cup. Sometimes that means more milk 🤷♀️
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
While it says that, an old Weekly Update was like: "It's an espresso forward drink and should only get a splash of milk," while offering no advice on how to actually accomplish that as most of the time you're left with a lot of room in the cup (every time in my experience)
boxinghamster162 points1y ago
Key word being old weekly update here. There was an updated one after that because so many people were complaining that their drink wasn't full 😂
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Customers really shouldn't have cared that much about that. Ok, here's some more ice cubes you're not going to eat.
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
Wouldn't sometimes needing more milk mean there wasn't enough ice that time? I thought the adding milk to fill the cup was to address the difference of people ordering light ice and ending up with a bunch of room.
boxinghamster161 points1y ago
Not always. I always make it to standard and sometimes it just doesn't fill the cup. Or the foam goes away quickly and people get mad when you hand them a half empty glass. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I add more ice before I add the milk, but filling it all the way isn't technically wrong either. Really starbucks shouldnt make drinks that can vary so widely and expect us to be consistent.
Worried-Translator991 points1y ago
How did you get the pics in the links?
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]1 points1y ago
just went to google images and hit copy on the picture
Wonderful_Nightmare-6 points1y ago
Just give the customer what they want. That's all the customer and corporate care about.
And honestly, I dont get paid enough to give a shit either way.
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]3 points1y ago
I don’t get paid enough to get yelled at even though im making drinks correctly. it’s not about giving them what they want. obviously I gave her more oatmilk. it’s about consistency so there isn’t confusion on what it’s supposed to look like
Malachite_Migranes-2 points1y ago
I just ask them how much milk they want when I’m pouring it in front of them to Avoid any of this nonsense. Baristas are not robots. The drinks are going to vary store to store, person to person. Just like how your McDonald’s burgers don’t have a consistent amount of mayo every time. 🤷♀️ shit happens.
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]6 points1y ago
standards are there so shit doesn’t happen. starbucks is very specific with how drinks are supposed to be made. that’s why there’s lines on the cups, that’s why cream is given in literal measurements (1/2 inch etc.) it’s a multibillion dollar corporation, the drinks are not supposed to vary based on who makes it.
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
For real!
I do caricatures in my spare time, used to do it full time. Those do depend on who made it, but even so, we still have standards to follow! Like every "face" sketch gets a neck and shoulders so they're not just a floating head, every "body" sketch gets a simple scene behind them, a black and white face should average 3 minutes or less without sacrificing quality, if it's on their face it gets drawn, etc.
There's really no reason a Starbucks drink with no modifications should vary so much between stores, they make everything almost idiot-proof.
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]2 points1y ago
that’s a really good comparison! true!
cookiemonstah872 points1y ago
Just curious, where do you live that McDonald's has mayo on their burgers?
They actually have special condiment dispensers that dispense a specific amount every time. Similar to how we have pumps to add a consistent amount of syrup, except they have even less room for user error like someone not pushing the pump far enough down. It's just a single trigger that releases a pre-measured blob of ketchup or mustard (or mayo, I suppose). They also count the pickles and have similarly fool-proof methods for measuring onions.
Standards exist for a reason.
Michaelbelikee-34 points1y ago
OP needs to chill out with their sense of entitlement.
philosopher_cat_lady7 points1y ago
"You're entitled if you want your coworkers to do their job correctly." I don't think you know how a workplace works
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]6 points1y ago
ah yes because it’s my duty to clock in and get scolded for other store’s mistakes for 9 hours. I don’t think you know what entitlement means
legoshis4 points1y ago
what did they say they’re entitled to…? they just want other baristas to make drinks to standard so they stop getting yelled at by customers. i think we’re all entitled to that lol
darkwolf523-32 points1y ago
I feel personally attacked.
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]30 points1y ago
then make the drink correctly?
darkwolf523-29 points1y ago
Don’t attack other barista then?
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]27 points1y ago
if you’d make the drink correctly you wouldn’t be getting attacked
hecaete479 points1y ago
Man, you must respond well to coaching from your supervisors /s
You shouldn't feel attacked by someone saying to make a drink the way it's supposed to be made lmfao
philosopher_cat_lady4 points1y ago
A barista's one job is to make drinks. If they don't make them correctly then feel attacked when someone points that out, they're in the wrong line of business
darkwolf523-1 points1y ago
I don’t get attack from customers. I’ll avoid situation like being yelled at doing what they asked.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Good. You don't do a good job
darkwolf5230 points1y ago
Says you. Never had a customer complaining.
philosopher_cat_lady1 points1y ago
Probably because customers who are knowledgeable enough to know you've made a drink incorrectly are also mature enough not to complain about it
darkwolf5231 points1y ago
Or they like the drink? Because customers always have that favorite barista. Rather avoid confrontation by adding like more milk, more juice/tea, etc rather then having them having a fit and yelling
echowolf9-24 points1y ago
An BSOSE is supposed to be topped off with oat milk, it’s on the recipe card and in the description on the app. Even looking at the picture on the app it’s quite light.
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]30 points1y ago
yes, topped off. she literally wanted it the color of an iced latte. that’s not correct. if you look at the app, there’s a light portion at the top, she wanted it all that color.
cookiemonstah872 points1y ago
Topped off after there's enough ice and foam that there's about an inch of room left. The weekly update saying to fill the cup with milk was specifically to address customers who order light ice because previously, they were supposed to be made with a set amount of milk and light ice meant extra room. Now it means extra milk instead.
As for the color on the app, part of it is light. Part is black. It should look layered, but if you mix it up, it'll be darker than a latte.

Comfortable-Plane944-13 points1y ago
It’s not about correcting people, it’s your approach. Glad I could spell it out for a you
Comfortable-Plane944-13 points1y ago
What makes you think others are making it wrong and she’s just not using other locations as a scapegoat?
Maybe don’t yell at other partners because a customers trying to get free shit out of you.
Torirock1028 points1y ago
cuz it’s a common drink to make wrong
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]17 points1y ago
if you’re not making it wrong then this isn’t about you. this is a common topic on this sub and it’s well known that people make it wrong all the time. literally last week someone posted a picture of theirs and said “is this supposed to be this light” and the comments were saying that it’s a common misconception that it gets like an inch or two of oatmilk.
Comfortable-Plane944-36 points1y ago
… there’s still no reason for you to be shouting. I get customers all the time complaining that there’s not enough milk/ too much ice. They’re never all going to be happy
borrowedurmumsvcard [OP]24 points1y ago
and there’s no reason for you to be fighting me on trying to urge people to make things to standard. make things to standard and it will be much easier to please.
and if someone typing in caps lock on the internet really bothers you that much I suggest not being on the internet
Comfortable-Plane944-20 points1y ago
Lol but there’s plenty of reason to tell people to not shout at people who haven’t wronged you. 🤷♀️
TheOnesLeftBehind1 points1y ago
Then ring them up for a $7+ brown sugar oat milk latte if that’s what they want.
