How often do customers remember the names of baristas? Do you like or dislike when customers remember your name?
ironic_nic65 points1y ago
I think it’s sweet when regulars start to remember you more, it makes my day.
Sincerityiscool12 points1y ago
This... except when regular customers confuse me and my coworker, then I feel pretty sad because I do try really hard to remember names out of respect and I know how much joy it can bring to know that someone cared enough to remember your name and spell it correctly. Then to just get called someone else's name consistently and then telling someone "Hi I'm not \[coworker\]." and they say "there are two of you?!" like... I am once again reminded that I am a means to an end and nothing more.
Yesterday I greeted a customer who came in said "Hi \[Customer\]" and they said "Hi \[coworker\]." I was like "Oh I'm actually not \[coworker\]." and when the customer left, they said "Bye not-\[coworker\]"
just makes me a sad :')

How common is it?
Jaxammx10 points1y ago
It’s usually pretty common if you’re working a lot of hours or a specific shift regularly
ironic_nic2 points1y ago
I work forty hours a week and always see the everyday regulars. It’s pretty common here.
uwumoment2 points1y ago
i work nights and this regular met me the first night shift i worked and i remembered his name after 2 visits, he remembered he after 2 as well and i actually see him in the morning too lol
ashleyokk38 points1y ago
the only thing i don’t like is the creepy customers that choose to take it upon themselves to give me a nickname lmao
Responsible_Snow71098 points1y ago
I feel that lmao i have long hair so wen i used to put it in a ponytail, this guy wud always call me ariana grande
ironic_nic2 points1y ago
i like to go by nic so my name tag says that, yet customers still call me nicole.
tavi199119 points1y ago
Nah, fuck that shit - keep my name out ya mouth
canidieyet_9 points1y ago
yeah, same. i do not like it when customers call me by my name—the only customer that i don’t mind calling me by name is a woman who comes in literally every day. she’s super sweet tho
Capricious-Coco13 points1y ago
I’m always weirded out for a second when they use my name then I remember that I literally wear a name tag😂
cookiemonstah870 points1y ago
Same. I always feel a little violated like "wait, I didn't tell you my na- oh right... I DIDN'T SAY YOU COULD USE IT, THOUGH!!!" But I know they're just being polite, so I try not to let it get to me
Illustrious-Air98347 points1y ago
Love it. As long as I don’t get creepo vibes
star_pants6 points1y ago
It really depends on the customer, if we have a good rapport then it's great and I remember their names as well! However when some people just search for my nametag to start saying my name, or refer to me by name withour having had any sort of conversation with me then it's pretty uncomfortable
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
Yes! Exactly this! I hate nametags... after 15 years of customer service, my goal is to never have a job that requires nametags again after I move on from Starbucks.
imvni56 points1y ago
It’s really nice, I have a couple regulars that remember my mine. At first it is really weird when I hear a stranger say my name though 😂
maryxjane4445 points1y ago
i like it :). i work at a high volume store with lots of regulars and only one of them has made the effort to learn my name, and it makes my day
nezaket5 points1y ago
it's nice if i like the customer lol. it's also nice if i forget to wear my name tag and they still remember who i am
ironic_nic1 points1y ago
this
drinkliquidclocks3 points1y ago
Just the regulars, I work in a very slow mall store so most people know my name actually lol. Especially the old dudes who come in the morning. They’re always nice. I don’t mind it.
Necessary_Low9393 points1y ago
Had one that tries to remember my name but couldn’t for the life of him (he knows everyone else and I was a new hire) and I just came off as it’s ok if u don’t remember why bother. Eventually he gave up
UserNoUsername3 points1y ago
usually only regulars or people i know from the area will call me by name, but i mean i have a name tag on so it’s not too odd to hear
TRoseee2 points1y ago
I love when they remember my name. I try to learn as many of theirs as possible and since I work the window pretty often and about five days a week I’m seeing them so many times a week. It’s nice.
MiaLedger2 points1y ago
There's this really sweet guy from the middle east that remembers my name and a lot of details about me because one day I wore a shirt from the same place one of his family members grew up. I used to live there and he got excited about it.
Advanced-Version20442 points1y ago
hate it. I have 5 different named name tags because there are creeps in this world and no one that I don’t personally know needs to know me at a name basis. Nice regulars? They’ll call me by my one of many different names and that’s fine. Any whacko old men calling me by a name? Absolutely not.
kikuuq2 points1y ago
I like it when customers make an effort to remember it, like when they are surprised I remember their name, so they remember mine in return
FfierceLaw2 points1y ago
I flash to the moment a man was holding his BSOSE about a year ago when it first launched and we were still figuring out how to make them. It had an inch of space at the top and he was really upset, almost in tears and I'm DTR saying something like, "It's a really espresso-forward beverage, maybe you would prefer a latte?" Meanwhile his girlfriend is over there in the passenger sear yelling my first name really loud repeated. At that moment a partner ushered me to my 10. So that's why I flinch when a customer says my name now. I really should put something fictitious on my tag. I have also learned how to make a perfect BSOSE that fills the cup to the lid
FrogInASpot2 points1y ago
ya know i like it but i also don’t want to be perceived in general lmao
medusas-garden2 points1y ago
I love customers like that!! I love when regulars will hear me say hi over the headset and still know who I am.
rudebii2 points1y ago
I have a unique first name that isn’t exotic but also isn’t very common anymore. Plus I worked 5 shifts at least a week, so customers remembered my name a lot. I never minded.
Loooogggssss1 points1y ago
Bruh its on our nametags
ObiJuanKenobi1993 [OP]1 points1y ago
Well yeah but I’ve noticed a lot (most?) customers don’t address baristas by name. I was just curious how common it was for customers to remember baristas’ names or use them in conversation. For me once I see a certain barista a handful of times and it’s obvious that we recognize each other, I’ll sometimes ask for their name and then start addressing them by name when I see them.
Joranaxis1 points1y ago
No, if they remember my name, I don’t mind. I have a ton of regulars who know my name and we chat on the daily. But when its any random customer who just looked at my name tag, it feels a little awkward. Feels kinda intrusive. I think rule of thumb for customers, if your barista knows you and has gotten to the point where they don’t have to ask for your name, you’re good to call them by name. Otherwise, just be friendly and polite, you’ll get there eventually!
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
I appreciate the sentiment, but I personally hate nametags and it makes me cringe when people use my name after reading it off of one. I think that's just from too many years of customer service. If someone actually remembers me/my name, that's cool! And I don't say anything about it if they read it off, I know they're just being polite, but I still hate it.
ObiJuanKenobi1993 [OP]1 points1y ago
What if someone calls you by your name because you had seen each other a few times and then they asked you what your name was (as opposed to reading it off your name tag)?
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
That's fine (though I'm a little weird about my name in general, even with friends, due to so much customer service and so many strangers using it without asking for it)
3picboss31 points1y ago
I wear a name tag 🤷♂️

It depends on whos the one saying it honestly, also if they bother to pronounce it right 😭
jy_mee1 points1y ago
I don't like it really do I use a different name at work
rterrebo1 points1y ago
I wish they didn't remember my name at all. 😂😂😂
chicken-tiddies1 points1y ago
I'm not a huge fan. I love the interaction you get with a regular but. When they address me by my name, it makes me uncomfy. Idk why tho.
