Can never find covers (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Affectionate_Book_82
I actually wanna quit because everytime I have to get a shift covered (due to exams or something) I text people who aren’t working that day, and some people answer and say they can’t, but the rest just never answer at all! Then I struggle to find anyone to cover my shift and have to end up going in! I feel like if I was a shift they would answer but since I’m just a barista everyone ignores me. It’s actually so annoying and stresses me out so much. I always cover for people but they don’t do the same for me. What should I do?

Oh no, don't worry, shifts can't get their shifts covered either. People like their time off, I don't blame them. I don't plan to pick up hours on my days off, I'd rather relax or at least get paid extra for the bother.

The advice? Put in the request very early or just call out sick if you have to.

It usually happens like that for me so I am working on planning ahead and requesting time off 3 weeks in advance when I know I will have a major assignment, an appointment, or something to do. Perhaps try looking out a couple weeks in advance? In the meantime sometimes asking in person or offering to switch shifts with someone has worked better for me than getting someone to cover a shift.

That's at every job like that. It sucks, but they also don't owe you anything. It is nice to do so, but they don't need to respond to shift request texts. They would just be taking to time and effort to say no anyway.

people don’t owe you anything just because you cover others shifts. request off in advance or change your availability

Do you have any other stores in your area? If so, you could ask around to see if any of those baristas might cover for you!

How do you cover at other stores? Do you just ask?
veryoriginal78 2 points 1y ago
That’s what we do in my area! All of our managers communicate regularly, so we’ll either ask our SM to put it out there to the other stores’ SMs, or we just tell people at the other store directly. I think some areas also have special Facebook groups for shift swapping, and Starbucks itself just rolled out a way for people to swap shifts between stores (I haven’t checked that out yet myself though).

as a shift who tries to call people in during call outs i promise you they don’t answer us ether. they don’t have to they’re not scheduled. be proactive. if you’re in college you get a syllabus first day of class take off for exams there.. it’s on you.

Sometimes them taking your shift means they have to work a tiring amount of days back to back, I personally don't like asking partners that don't have 2 days off back to back because I know most people make plans for their days off or want to rest at least that 1 day if their days off are split. It'll ll be more difficult if others also have exams to study or prep for and have already planned for that.

This sounds like a personal problem. It’s not others responsibility to cover for you on their day off

same here and I stopped answering others when they call me because they don't return the favor. Like my family caught covid and I needed someone to cover my shift the next day to figure out my next moves. I asked a co-worker and she whined about it being her only day off till next week (because she asked for more hours and shifts so she got shifts at another store) I was kind of pissed off because she didnt want to cover it (which is dumb reason for me to be mad at because its understandable) but I guess the only thing that made me mad was when she whined to me as if my family getting covid was a HUGE inconvenience to her enjoying her day off. (my sister and mom both have major health issues which I'm vocal about at work so she knew this) I came to realize that most co-workers will not return the favor and you have to realize that, very few do.

I don't understand exactly how it works, but when my kiddo got scheduled when they had an appointment (didn't have time to ask on advance), they clicked on that shift and got a pop-up as to what to do with that shift. One of the options was to put it up for someone to take. That info is available to anyone at stores in the district (region? Idk which it is). People in their store and about 5 other stores could then pick it up if they wanted.

yes if you click on your shift for that day there’s an option to “offer shift” and people who have their notifications on on the app will get a notification that a shift is a available

what i do is i tell them i can’t work on that day, they say to find a cover, then i mass text every worker in a giant gc and then i don’t think about it any more. as long as i pretended to try to find a cover, then i think i’m good
