Why on earth am I, a Freshman in H.S working the hours of an adult? I know theres all sorts of hour stuff going on, but I work with multiple folks who desperately need hours , and I can’t help but feel bad for them. I don’t even know if I’m mentally & physically prepared. Lmao. (i.redd.it)
submitted by roovols
[deleted] 161 points 1y ago
does your SM not know you’re in high school! lol why are the scheduling a teenager for an 8 hour on a wednesday? are you on break
roovols [OP] 70 points 1y ago
Homeschooled. Yes they do as far as I know.
iamnotabarbie 111 points 1y ago
Are you a minor? Minors can’t work before 3pm on school days and def not 8hrs. Regardless is they are homeschooled or independent study or even out of high school
socalsailor027 40 points 1y ago
Doesn’t apply to home schooled we have 2 homeschooled minors and the only rule that apply to them is 8 hours but it’s probably state by state
roovols [OP] 27 points 1y ago
I am 15 years of age, correct. I was hired while I was 14, btw.
romansapprentice 19 points 1y ago
>Minors can’t work before 3pm on school days and def not 8hrs.

Depends on what state you live in.
persona-2 5 points 1y ago
Legally yes. Starbucks no. Starbucks has made rules where they don’t allow minors to work before 3 on school days regardless of the type of school they are in.
ryannmm5 7 points 1y ago
i’m a minor, and i’m currently working :)
the school has to write a letter to our sm saying that it is allowed as long as we keep up on our work
iamnotabarbie 6 points 1y ago
Really bc my school did the same and the Starbucks rules went over that it’s different for license stories they allow it
musicotic 1 points 1y ago
Not true, if youre graduated in my state, you can work whatever you want to. At my restaurant (mcds) we've had a 17 year old working 5-4s 5 days a week because he graduated last year from a military academy
Ninjagao5 1 points 1y ago
I’m in same thing dam I wish I had those hours I’m trying to buy my car and I get like 12 hours a week
Unlikely_Ad2324 84 points 1y ago
i feel like nobody is understanding OP’s point. They are a FRESHMAN in HS. They gotta be what 15 years old? They’re definitely a minor! At starbucks minors can only be scheduled for 4 hours NOT 8. So this isn’t okay even if it’s normal. Cause yes it is normal for ADULTS, not MINORS.
GarbageValuable1888 24 points 1y ago
What? That’s not true. Maybe that’s a state regulation specific to your area. Most places allow around 8 hour shifts for minors.
roovols [OP] 12 points 1y ago
you are continuing to miss my point. i dont care about the labor laws. i care about ME , a FRESHMAN IN HIGHSCHOOL, getting the hours of an ADULT, when there are ADULTS that NEED hours like these to survive,
Anthonythebarista 3 points 1y ago
Have you tried to change your availability?
hystericalbirbe 7 points 1y ago
I was a minor at SB, worked 6-8 hr shifts often
haydensidun 2 points 1y ago
I am currently a minor at SB and work mostly 6-8 hour shifts
Unlikely_Ad2324 3 points 1y ago
If they only work weekends then yes but on a weekday, no. Cause minors can only work a certain amount of hours per week.
GarbageValuable1888 -1 points 1y ago
Sorry - I missed the OP’s age. For people under 16, there are hour limitations. 16-17 there are no federal limits. That’s my bad.
aaronbdancer 3 points 1y ago
I understand the point but they 200% can depending on your state. In pa they can work up to 8 hour shifts after 7am and before 10pm on school nights
Unlikely_Ad2324 5 points 1y ago
I get that, but that is sad for a 14/15 year old lmao. For a 16/17 i would understand, but OP is 15 and thats too much.
persona-2 3 points 1y ago
Yes. State laws vary. Starbucks policy doesn’t. Starbucks policy is more restrictive then our state law. Minors still have to follow starbucks policy and so do the SMs that schedule them.
Independent_Hope3421 1 points 1y ago
rules can be different as well if they aren’t at a corporate store. i work at a licensed store and we have had minors work 8 hour shifts on the weekends or weekdays on their school breaks.
mypoopoosmelly69 3 points 1y ago
I didnt know that lol, there’s a minor at my store who was literally scheduled 9-5 BUUUT they only work on weekends so.
Unlikely_Ad2324 2 points 1y ago
If they’re available all week, their schedules would be broken up in 4 hours because they can only work a certain amount of hours per week. So on weekends that would make sense.
Kayp22296 1 points 1y ago
This isn’t true. It totally depends on what state you live in
Unlikely_Ad2324 1 points 1y ago
Lmao minors can’t even work past 3pm on a school night and some stores close at 8pm-9pm which isn’t even a full 8 hours. You expect them to miss school just to go to work for 8 hours?
Kayp22296 1 points 1y ago
We even have special laws in place where I live letting some minors get their driver’s license as soon as they turn 14, specifically so they can drive farm equipment, pick up younger siblings, etc.
Unlikely_Ad2324 1 points 1y ago
You are talking about state law then .. Cause what does that have to do with starbucks
Kayp22296 1 points 1y ago
That’s not true in my state. We have laws in place allowing high school student to work during the day for high school credit. Also, our home school kids work 8 hour shifts during the week often. There is a set number of hours they cannot go past during the school year, they cannot work before 7am or after 7pm, and work cannot legally interfere with them being at school during school hours. I wasn’t saying you’re wrong about your state, but some states have different laws that you might not know about, especially in more rural areas where families depend on income from every member old enough to work.
Unlikely_Ad2324 1 points 1y ago
Is that your state law or starbucks policy? Because those are different.
rosebudftw 51 points 1y ago
i would try to get it covered. people are like oh that’s normal blah blah blah not if you’re 15 it’s not. most of our minors only work like 4-5 hours a day unless it’s saturday or sunday.
roovols [OP] 10 points 1y ago
I typically work 4-6 hrs a shift but i occasionally get one like this
luvduvbunny 27 points 1y ago
A high schooler, homeschooled or not, really shouldn’t be spending this much time at work. I would give my shift up to someone who needs the extra shift.
sanasslut 25 points 1y ago
first job behavior
roovols [OP] 8 points 1y ago
no shit lol
[deleted] 16 points 1y ago
fr, ofc this is your first job, you’re 15. smh at this commenter for making fun of you for it, and smh even more at everyone downvoting you OP. you are entitled to reasonable hours for someone in your specific situation. never let anyone tell you otherwise by comparing your hours to someone else’s, because they aren’t in your specific situation, and they aren’t you, ofc they may have different needs.
PuesTaCabron 24 points 1y ago
It’s really not that bad but you can always give the shift up.
roovols [OP] -2 points 1y ago
may not seem that way to you lol
PuesTaCabron 3 points 1y ago
Yeah, definitely varies from person to person and store to store.
[deleted] 16 points 1y ago
smh to all the ppl downvoting OP’s comments. y’all, this person is 15, cmon, at 15 an 8h shift would be hell to you too, especially this time of year. i think in OP’s shoes, i would be too burnt out to do *anything.* the needs of a FRESHMAN in HIGH SCHOOL are very different than the needs of most of you commenting, assuming the majority of you are 18+. let’s not forget to expect a child to have the needs of a child. besides, even if OP was being ridiculous like y’all wanna make them out to be, it’s even MORE ridiculous for adults to make fun of a child, just for not having the knowledge & experience adults have. fuck y’all fr, that’s embarrassing. stay strong OP, and never be afraid to tell your manager you’re feeling burnt out & need shorter and/or fewer shifts, at least until tests & finals chill out.
roovols [OP] 7 points 1y ago
thanks bro. means alot
Pre-rich-bish 15 points 1y ago
I don’t understand how y’all missed the point…
violaaesthetic 13 points 1y ago
Did anyone else notice what day this schedule is for? I think some of the non-minor partners may have requested that day of for…. some reason 👀
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
[deleted]
violaaesthetic 1 points 1y ago
It's their schedule for the date 4/20 (the "weed number"). My suspicion is that this poor home-schooled teenager got scheduled for a long shift because a lot of the older partners requested that day off of work in order to smoke weed.
Dry_Beautiful4564 8 points 1y ago
i’m a minor in highschool and i’m not allowed to work 4+ hour shifts on weekdays and 8+ hour shifts on weekends. Also can’t work more than 20 hours a week
Unlikely_Ad2324 1 points 1y ago
Yes that is the starbucks policy for minors.
OliviaPooPoo 7 points 1y ago
Lol no offense but I can’t even imagine working with a 15 year old… like that’s crazy. This shit can be a lot for an adult, that’s like child labor bro.
brooklxn 7 points 1y ago
yeah that’s a lot of hours for a 14/15 year old
adventurelyfe 5 points 1y ago
I’m not sure what the issue is?

Is it the 8 hour shift?

If so…that’s normal for a job…
notrachelmar 23 points 1y ago
yeah but i see OP’s problem - they’re young and in school, definitely not paying rent or any big bills… also hour cuts are still going on and adults need the hours more. if i were OP id offer the shift on the app and i’m sure somebody will claim it. hell if i was at that store i’d claim it lol

most people who are in high school don’t want to work full 8 hr shifts. i personally was a different story but if i could go back, i’d enjoy being a teenager more and work less
roovols [OP] 5 points 1y ago
I have offered the shift, just did a few mins ago
bedroomwitxh 11 points 1y ago
OP is probably 14 or 15 years old since they’re a freshman in HS. They have coworkers who need the hours more than them. Shit I wouldn’t want to work an 8 hour shift at 15 years old, especially when the people right next to me NEED those hours to survive. OP is getting a lot of negative feedback, but I see why they’re frustrated.

Acedre123 4 points 1y ago
I wonder why they scheduled you before 3pm i get your homeschooled and that they may know but that isnt a reason to then schedule you before 3pm you got homework and other responsibilities related to school still just the same as someone going to a public school.
roovols [OP] 5 points 1y ago
I personally went to my SM and asked for earlier hours, morning shift folks are better to work with at my store
BothWeb1004 3 points 1y ago
🙃 Our minors are not allowed to work before 3 pm on weekdays and only allowed 4 hour shifts on school days, by laaaaaw. Just because ya'll are for child labor, doesn't mean everyone is
willywankaz432 3 points 1y ago
Bruh my manger won’t even let us work more then 5hrs a shift unless you are a shift ….
sleepythyme07 3 points 1y ago
I would definitely offer it up to get covered and speak with your SM if you want to stick to shorter shifts! Our scheduling system doesn't allow anyone marked as a minor to be scheduled for more than 4 hours on a week day if they are currently in session, and then during off session (summer break, holidays etc) they can work longer shifts - but still nothing before 7 pm or after 10 pm. That's not labor law, but it is Starbucks policy; I wonder how your SM has been able to skirt that. The other thing that concerns me is that Starbucks does not hire anyone under 16. Are you at a corporate location or licensed?
roovols [OP] 1 points 1y ago
No idea about the difference of Corporate or Licensed, BUT, the starbuckses (im tired) in my state hire at 14
pink-smoke 1 points 1y ago
Corporate would be in a self standing store for example, whereas a licensed store is a store owned by a separate corporation like target or Barnes and noble.
roovols [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Corporate
verdeuce 3 points 1y ago
Make sure your manager has you marked as a minor in school because homeschooled or not you are still a minor in school. If they say something about having you out of school let your district manager know
TripleV420 3 points 1y ago
I’d definitely update your availability so this doesn’t happen again. Also, just in case, learn the labor laws of your state.
CorCaroli11 3 points 1y ago
I swear this has to be a company wide thing... right before I left full time employees who have to make enough money to *survive* at my store were losing hours, while part time employees *who were students* were being scheduled for nearly 40 hrs.

Is this some weird union busting thing or something? Because it makes zero sense to me. It's probably supposed to. :/
roovols [OP] 4 points 1y ago
I don’t know. I’m just set on giving this shift to an adult.
Beneficial-Base5698 3 points 1y ago
Probably due to your availability. Some adults expect full time hours when their availability is 8-4 from Monday to Friday. Honestly, don’t worry about it but if you really want to help, offer your shift to the market place.
BeastBoy2point0 3 points 1y ago
ah good luck i know how that is on top of high school and such :/ hopefully you can talk to your SM and/or get at least part of it covered ?
for preparing just make sure to really take advantage of your breaks , use earbuds to drown out all the starbucks sounds and try to eat n hydrate :)
uwumoment 2 points 1y ago
dude im in college and i consider myself an adult and i’ve only worked an 8 hour shift once. i have boundaries and i’m really lucky my sm knows that and understands. you really need to bring this up bc you shouldn’t be spending all your free time working. bs
pink-smoke 2 points 1y ago
Talk to your manager, this is against Starbucks policy. Minors aren’t allowed to work before 3p on weekdays during the school year. Bring your dm in if necessary
Bell-In-A-Box 2 points 1y ago
Just wanted to say it probably wont be as awful as you're thinking. When I was 15 I worked 10 hour shifts on the weekends at a dog boarding kennel, super laborious job, it was definitely tough but you'll get through it!! Talk to management about why you're working those hours so it can be reduced in the future though :)
pink-smoke 2 points 1y ago
Op is scheduled that shift on a Wednesday though
Bell-In-A-Box 1 points 1y ago
True, but they also said they're homeschooled. Idk just sayin the 8 hour shift itself probably wont be too bad
pink-smoke 1 points 1y ago
School is school. The law doesn’t change just because it’s at home and not in a school building.
greenChainsaws 2 points 1y ago
thats messed up. ill take your hours!
impasse602 2 points 1y ago
Holy shit you you get 8 hour shift? I barely get 4-5 hour shifts! I mean if you dont want it you could always swap with someone who really needs
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
[deleted]
HiiAlberta 1 points 1y ago
Shit ill take it lmao
graylikesoap 1 points 1y ago
my starbucks sm doesn’t even hire people that are still in highschool because we are constantly working and coming in for other people and if you’re under 18 it’s typically not easy to rely on you to come in. i would speak with your sm and explain that you need less and later hours, that you’re still in school and while you like your job, you need to focus on school more than work, especially since you are as young as you are
francescugh 1 points 1y ago
change your availability
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
[deleted]
persona-2 1 points 1y ago
They can’t do that. Minors have an 8 hour cap for max number of hours in a day.
juicyspitwater 1 points 1y ago
I started working with sbux when I was 16 and I did independent studies for high school. It was pretty normal for me to be working 38 hours a week and around 8 hours a day.
aecarn 1 points 1y ago
it's totally valid to ask for part of that shift to get covered. that's a lot to handle as a high schooler!!
hautsause 1 points 1y ago
Starbucks is so weird about scheduling. I wanted a part time job. They always scheduled me 40+ hours with 23 other baristas on staff.
Brief_Coat6526 1 points 1y ago
Your store manager sucks
RexFlex420 1 points 1y ago
The Lmao is loud lol
Bribarista 1 points 1y ago
i wish i had hours like this
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 1y ago
If you have a problem with it can’t you just change your availability or ask your SM about it? Seems like they easily wouldn’t give you this shift if you don’t want it
ryman230 1 points 1y ago
As far as the law goes in my state, 8 hours is appropriate if they’re not in school. 3 hours if they’re in school.

With that being said, im quite jealous you’re getting 7.5 hour schedules, I’ve been doing 5.5 hour days 5-6 days a week, I’d rather do 7-9 hr shifts or double 5 hr shifts a few days a week.
sharkiemd 1 points 1y ago
this ultimately depends on labor laws in your state. most managers are gonna schedule you to the limits of the law, and if there’s something you can’t do for essentially “personal” reasons (as bad as that sounds), you need to talk to your manager about it. do i think its bullshit, personally? yes! but your manager (not strangers on reddit) needs to know your limits and if you limits don’t work within business needs, there has to be some compromising. that’s just how the mocha cookie crumbles ):
starbiesslave28 1 points 1y ago
how does yours look like that...am i missing something😅
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago
wdym? your app doesn’t?
starbiesslave28 1 points 1y ago
i don't have the app...i didn't know that was a thing!!!
[deleted] 1 points 1y ago

medusas-garden 1 points 1y ago
8 hour shift aren’t bad, in fact I prefer them over shorter shifts bc you get more breaks. More manageable imo. If you don’t want to work long hours work that out with your SM. They’re not really doing anything wrong here by scheduling you within your availability.
roovols [OP] 6 points 1y ago
Missing my point
medusas-garden -2 points 1y ago
Not really sure what your point is here
TripleV420 4 points 1y ago
I think it’s because she’s 14/15 and a freshman in high school. She shouldn’t be working from 10:30 AM-6:30 PM if she’s still in high school.
roovols [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Let me spell it out for you.

I, a male 15 year old, freshman in highschool, working his first job, hired in february, is (scheduled to ) working a 7 hr shift.

Do you see the problem?
b99__throwaway 5 points 1y ago
my fave is a 6.5 (CA) bc it’s the smallest shift possible to get a lunch AND 2 tens
trbpanda 0 points 1y ago
if you dont want to be scheduled for 8 hour shifts simply tell your sm that you are not available to work 8 hour shifts end of story
Remarkable_Hold_2342 -7 points 1y ago
Every job scheduled people like that as long as they have the availability and the laws are ok with them doing so, sorry bud but it’s the norm, and I promise it’s not THAT bad, cause if you think about it you’re actually only on the floor for a little less than 7 hours if you take out your lunch and 10
NothingToSeeFolks 2 points 1y ago
7.5 hours is including their 30 min break, they’re scheduled for 8 hours not including breaks.
Remarkable_Hold_2342 3 points 1y ago
Pfft not me not looking at when the shift actually starts and ends and failing to do the math🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ thank you for pointing it out lol
NothingToSeeFolks 2 points 1y ago
No worries! :)
happybowlita83 -4 points 1y ago
You're scheduled based on your availability and in most states there are laws that a manager has to follow for minors so as long as you have that open availability and they're following those laws it's something that can keep happening. Most minors only have a weekend availability for this reason. I've been working since I qas 14, but when I officially got my first job I was a senior in HS doing school 2-3x a week, and worked 5 days a week 30 something hours because I had the availability.
Kind_Breath5203 -1 points 1y ago
I mean don’t complain about it unless you know you can’t handle it🤷🏼‍♂️ don’t feel bad because you are getting more hours, because you may be more present and a harder worker than your other partners who aren’t getting the hours
roovols [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I hope you’re right but I still am not physically and mentally ready for the onslaught of an 8 hr shift
Townsvillegal97 -1 points 1y ago
Why don’t you just let them work your shift then…..
roovols [OP] 1 points 1y ago
thanks for stating the obvious
Townsvillegal97 -2 points 1y ago
Maybe they scheduled you for your gracious sarcasm :)
Obviously you’re ranting …
1. Give your shift to them you wouldn’t feel bad and wouldn’t have to be worried about having to be mentally and psychically prepared …
2. 8/10 of the times the manager isn’t scheduling them/ other people cause they have weird availability and there isn’t anyone but people who don’t , like you.assuming other times you’ve worked until 6:30.
3. Problem solve and educate yourself or even here’s a real good one… connect with your manger before this shift . I mean you had a whole 3 weeks to ask :)instead of being angry and mentally and psychically draining yourself and lashing out at me like a tween .
Xoxo
Enjoy your 7.5 , not 8hr adult shift :)
