yall im literally screwed i’ve asked my manager at LEAST 3 times now for more hours because i’m not even joking, i don’t make enough to live, and i still am only getting scheduled for 16 hrs a week……it’s not funny anymore like i can’t pay my bills or fucking rent and they’re not even phased by it…so do i need to just keep asking or should i take it up with the DM since it’s basically been months of me asking for more hours and getting nowhere
pranasoup140 points1y ago
ask your DM to help you find a location that can accommodate more hours for you.
ihateyousoymatcha12 points1y ago
Agreed, check in with your DM.
If the DM won't do anything, go to local stores, tell them you're looking for hours, and give your contact in case they need a cover
shouldvewroteitdown88 points1y ago
YMMV with this but when my SM did this to me i just started telling them that I wasn’t gonna be able to make it to store meetings or shifts because they didn’t schedule me enough to afford to put gas in my car.
Followed through on the threat exactly once and got more hours after that.
I quit a couple months later.
BeardiesRule11278 points1y ago
Your DM is usually the one telling your SM to cut hours.
littleorphananney10 points1y ago
happy cake day!!
iqueefkief1 points1y ago
also, it’s based on some stupid fucking corporate algorithm.
Top_Medicine141862 points1y ago
I wouldn’t lose my home/car/etc over Starbucks. There are plenty of places hiring who can offer you the hours you need. I would start applying and leave Starbucks if I were in this situation.
rolyat77746 points1y ago
when this was happening to me I immediately just started looking for new jobs. apply to banks! a lot of them love Starbucks workers because we are already used to giving good customer service. chase pays really well. if your manager is willing to work with you on your schedule then you can try to do both! i know most of the associate banker positions at chase (basically a teller) are guaranteed to give you 30 hours a week plus I’m making $7 more than I was at Starbucks. i hope you can find something!
palepinktulip7 points1y ago
Do u need a business or finance degree to be an associate banker?
spookbish696 points1y ago
To become a banker you don’t really need anything. In the small town I’m moving to the bankers are Starbucks workers on weekends. And my siblings straight out of high school went to work for the bank
Responsible_Snow71092 points1y ago
Oooh girl thanks for the info. Im guna apply to banks. Although i may be getting this compounding pharmacy job which is 20 minutes away but im guna try applying to banks near my house. Thanks again for the info!
rolyat7771 points1y ago
associate banker is basically just a teller position with a fancy name. you don’t need any education or experience!
morganisstrange3 points1y ago
I did online banking as a 17 year old with only a retail background and no diploma(I was still in high school). I was paid upwards of 20(state min of 7.25) when I left and all I had to do was sit in my pajamas and answer peoples calls. If you have a good sense of humor and don’t mind being yelled at over the phone, it’s a hell of a job. It’s especially good for people with mobility or health issues.
CriticalSheep38 points1y ago
I mean this with my whole chest: Find a different job. Target pays better. Tell Target you can start immediately. Quit Starbucks without notice. They're not giving you hours anyway- you don't need to give them courtesy either.
Ecstatic_Math_3839-17 points1y ago
Except Starbucks has tons of perks like free medical, free college, free food and drink.
board-certified32 points1y ago
starbucks does not have free medical
uwumoment9 points1y ago
you’re definitely somebody’s dm 😭
Ecstatic_Math_38391 points1y ago
No
Feeling-Aerie19894 points1y ago
Also worth mentioning, there are benefits like health insurance and education that are only available if a partner works at least 25hrs a week. If people aren't getting scheduled at least that, they are at risk of loosing their coverage. Starbucks is a shit show and does not deserve being defended
Responsible_Snow71094 points1y ago
Yea what others said. Starbucks doesnt have free medical. I get $48 taken out of my paychecks for my insurance and dental combined. And thats even at risk with all the slashed hours
Ecstatic_Math_38391 points1y ago
I’m sorry, I didn’t know that
Responsible_Snow71092 points1y ago
All good, u just had a misunderstanding. 🙂
uwumoment3 points1y ago
lmfao i wish

Try to find a better coffeeshop. That’s what I did. Often they’re very willing to hire Sbux expats since we already have a basic understanding of coffee drinks and the job functions and can handle rushes much worse than other shops typically get. They’re also more fun.
jamieisntgay4 points1y ago
What's the atmosphere like at coffeeshops that aren't Starbucks? Genuinely curious since I'm only used to that fast food atmosphere
goddessofwaterpolo5 points1y ago
It’s a real shock going from Sbux to my new shop. I know I’m very lucky to work at a fantastic place but it’s so much better. It’s much calmer, since there’s less people, but still busy enough to keep everybody from getting bored. Since we have less customers we have more time to make really quality drinks, with manual machines, and I find myself actually really excited to recommend things to people because I am so excited about all of the things we offer since I’m confident in their quality.
It’s also more lax, people are happier, I have so much fun every day it feels like a vacation from “work” (sbux). I work every day this week, half at sbux and half at the other store (I’m in the process of leaving) and I never feel as emotionally drained or worn out as I do there.
I can’t say every experience will be like that but that’s my personal experience and many other shops in my city are like this. I highly recommend frequenting some stores in your area and hanging around to try to gauge how the baristas seem to be enjoying or carrying themselves and what it looks like to work there, the vibes, how the customers are. I started at this shop because I was a regular and everyone seemed to love their job.
jamieisntgay2 points1y ago
Thanks for the in-depth response! I'll definitely be thinking about it :)
vietlazed19 points1y ago
Find your local Starbucks group or Facebook groups or call up other other store till them your availability to work days that you are not scheduled at your store
Mr_SCPF5 points1y ago
Why is this being downvoted?
vietlazed1 points1y ago
Don't depend on other like that to give it to you
normaldud-2 points1y ago
Probably because this is the generic store manager answer because I hear this from mine all of the time
vietlazed3 points1y ago
Shit look out for yourseft too survive I work all over cities to get my 40hours +
wasabitoad18 points1y ago
Try and find a Starbucks in a target! They start at 15 plus you can pick up extra shifts a lot easier! And you already have all of that coffee knowledge!
deeciphered6 points1y ago
I worked at a tarbucks for a year and they would absolutely jump on an ex corporate barista.
I've heard they've been cutting hours really bad too unfortunately but might depend on location.
katesperdaghost2 points1y ago
as a current tarbucks barista can confirm both, but i will say if you're not getting hours in one area you can crosstrain in other areas and pick up shifts to get more hours if you're not getting scheduled much, so it's a bit more flexible than a corporate starbucks!
particularBillarina18 points1y ago
Unless you were hired as full time they are under no obligation to give you any hours at all. And even if you are hired as full time they still don't have to unfortunately.
You can take it up with the DM but I doubt it will do a single thing sadly.
Sdee123422 points1y ago
To add, begin applying at jobs left and right. The labor shortage is real and many many companies will pay you more than starbucks simply because you walk in and tell them you are a rock star at customer service and starbucks trained you. Good luck💛
jesthere3 points1y ago
Banks will hire you. Several of my coworkers from Starbucks got hired.
jesthere7 points1y ago
If you are in immediate danger of losing your housing, apply to Starbucks CUP Fund:
:( honestly the second my hours start to suffer I start looking for something else. It has happened a lot to me and it’s actually the reason I have so much fast food/ retail job experience. If I don’t see a profitable income I move on. I’ve gotten even harder on this. Do not ever let a job take advantage of you. I set down some very firm expectations with my manager “I want to work as much as I can and work as early as I can” my manager has been cooperative with that but if I start getting pathetic hours I’m jumping ship.
Zealousideal-Star4483 points1y ago
Honestly tell your manager then that if you don’t get the hours you need to survive, then you are gonna have to change your availability to accommodate another job and to prepare for that. Starbucks isn’t going anywhere and if you need to quit or lessen your hours to the point of barely getting insurance do it! There are plenty of customer service jobs that would kill for someone who knows how to work under as much pressure we do. Know your worth, know what you need. Be honest with how much your rent and bills are. Add your food, gas, and at least 20 bucks a week for savings. And then see how much with your pay you would need to break even, don’t forget they take your taxes for you as well.
You might also be able to ask for help through the cup fund. I’d look into money envelope saving to help get out of this, it takes a minute to set it up bet it’s been a life saver to physically have to divide my money up and plan what I need.
Torirock103 points1y ago
try to file for unemployment
jesthere4 points1y ago
I think you can file for partial unemployment if you have a major hours change. It depends on which state you are in (if you are in the US).
misterkevinoh2 points1y ago
I used to call up other stores and just ask if they need coverage. Once you start getting to know the other stores you’ll always have a steady stream of hours. It’s not ideal but it’s always an option.
soundfanatic2 points1y ago
unionize your store. i'm not kidding, that's how you get more hours. and better pay, and health benefits that don't get worse every year because they keep stripping us of our basic human needs to fuel the fleets of mega yachts corporate board members buy for themselves every year.
Kayp222962 points1y ago
I am going to be honest with you; I begged my SM for hours. I was lucky to get 25 a week. I just recently quit because I am moving across the country. There is something shady going on with hours at Starbucks. I don’t know anyone who consistently works over 35 hours a week.
Moral is: I think this is a company wide issue and it might be time to start cutting starbucks and looking for work elsewhere. I have been asking since January and nothing had changed.
deeciphered3 points1y ago
I consistently work between 30 and 37 hours a week my manager has been really great about not cutting our hours though.
Kayp222962 points1y ago
Some people at my store went from getting 30+ hours a week to less than 20 a week
deeciphered3 points1y ago
Not surprised at all. I'm really grateful my manager has been so good about keeping our hours consistent. Just hoping it stays that way.
Tweedy13451 points1y ago
Ok so this is what you need to do (depending on your state)
Have your hours significantly declined by half over the last 6 months? If you can show a record of this ( which is easy to do via pay stubs) then you apply for unemployment for lost wages. When the claim goes to your DM they will have to state why they have cut hours.
You can use this to your advantage, because if you get in any trouble for filing when you have proof then it’s grounds for a lawsuit.
You can also get it in writing from you SM on the reason why your hours were cut to make sure that it’s not performance related.
3 other other options, ask to move to a different store (same position) with guaranteed hours Or ask your current store what positions within the store you can apply to that then have guaranteed hours( trainer, lead, ETC) or ask your SM what store has above positions open with guaranteed hours that you can apply for
averidgepeen1 points1y ago
Go work somewhere else?
yellowsock121 points1y ago
Have you tried applying for more jobs? I would’ve started doing that after the first time I asked for more hours and didn’t receive any

Why do people expect to pay their bills with a part time job
ReadOk6496-4 points1y ago
If you get benefits they have to give you at least 20 hrs
KenansCloud3 points1y ago
Actually they don’t, which is stupid
ReadOk64962 points1y ago
Oh dang my store manager does
dallizzlee3 points1y ago
They don’t HAVE to, you have to keep 20 hours a week to continue to qualify.
