Parental Leave question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ImaginaryWeirdo
Hi!

This is regarding my husband who works for Starbucks. He applied for parental leave through Starbucks and got approved but he received no payment.

When he talked to someone on the phone regarding this, he was told he needed to apply for state disability and that Starbucks needs to receive that award letter (whether he denied benefits through the state or approved) in order for the money to be paid to him.

Has anyone dealt with this? We had never had to use anything like this through Starbucks so we thought it was strictly he applies through work for parental leave and thats all. We are stressed a little now...he is applying today for the CA disability but based on how it has gone for me, we are worried about the timing and now just want to make sure we do everything right.

For myself, non Starbucks related - I applied for CA disability the end of February and still haven't had my claim approved. Once he applies, does anyone know if there is anything else on his end we would need to do? Just to make sure everything is in motion.

Thank you!

When I broke my finger, Sedgwick gave me 0 information about needing to apply for the state until I was halfway through my leave. I had to literally ask them why they were sending me $0 checks. And by the time I returned to work, I still hadn’t even received my paperwork (Partner was working full-time, we were strapped for cash so so I had no way to get to a physical office so I had to wait for the paperwork to be mailed to me as I didn’t have a CA state license)

As far as what they told me, once they receive that award letter, they will backpay for whatever is missed. As far as I’m aware, once they receive that award letter you should be golden. Because I had broken my finger, I had to keep up with medical records.

I’m surprised they are asking you to apply for disability though? For parental leave too
