And this is coming from someone who likes their coworkers. Some of us have the displeasure of working with people who scream at us for every little thing like standing in their way when you were told to be in that specific spot or having to remake drinks when customers order a grande and then claim it was a venti at handoff to save a couple dollars
YaranaLol [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Yeah I’m very lucky in that respect. My coworkers are some of my best friends. I’ve worked at stores where everyone was horrible and if I’d stayed there much longer I definitely would have quit

I’m sorry :( bar baristas can be really rude to the cashier it’s so annoying
Puddle_Duck88 6 points 1y ago
We all do all the jobs at my store. We kind of rotate around so everyone learns to do everything. The last time I got yelled at I had just got back from my break and I was told to go to window and help the girl there catch up during peak, when I got there she was talking to another coworker about something not even work related so I said “hey, I’m on window” and I started taking payment from the customer. Then she walks backwards two feet from where she was into me and instead of just saying sorry she screamed at me and told me that I needed to tell people if I was going to walk behind them and I said “I told you I was on window” and then I shrugged it off and turn back around and the customer goes “well that wasn’t very nice” 😂

I’m really sorry you and your team had to go through this. Sending all of you healing energy that sounds incredibly traumatic. They should’ve closed the store or had a staff from another store take over for that day.
What you said about the high turnover & greenbeans getting hardened and emotional is very true. It’s crazy that most of us went through such a negative emotional experience while starting the job & how normal & expected that is. But after you get past that stage I really do love the job- mostly the people I work with. We get to feeling so close because of all the shitty interactions we have to endure together

glad to see i’m not the only one who absolutely slated corporate in this survey lol

Man reading stuff like this just hammers home how important good management is (and by good I mean management that has experience as baristas themselves, understanding and leeway for their partners' needs, and just generally puts partner well-being over the corporate bottom line). I have had a panic attack at work - who hasn't at this job tbh - while solo'ing drive during peak, but my ASM pulled me off immediately and let me cool down in the back room. I've never gotten put into a situation that put me past my limit since (and I'm on bar during peak almost every shift), and that literally all boils down to having managers and shifts that actually value their partners' mental health. Without that, this job is so much worse. I've gotten lucky.
YaranaLol [OP] 4 points 1y ago
Oh absolutely. It’s a game changer and the only reason I’ve still sick around. My sm is such a sweetheart and the rest of the shift team are some of my best friends. Working here has really increased my understanding of how important good management is and I strive to be a kind, empathetic shift every day

What you described is too real. It's harrowing that experiences like this are the same regardless of what store you're at or who your manager is. I'm so sorry for your loss.. this job already makes life difficult enough without adding grief to the mix. You and your coworkers are *soldiers* for getting through the day, and you should have been forced to.
Temporary-Nebula 1 points 1y ago
This is so dramatic
cynicosm 1 points 1y ago
i'm so sorry about your loss, and i hope you and your fellow partners are holding up alright. that is horrific to hear :(

probably unpopular but why wouldn't you just quit at that point lol? as a worker, you can vote with your labor just as a consumer votes with their wallet. i've worked for sbux for 3 years and haven't had the experiences that you have had. that store/district *should* have a high turnover rate and ultimately be unsuccessful if the problems you described are systemic.
death2capitalism2 9 points 1y ago
why quit when we can come together and fight to make it a better working place for all?
0x52and1x52 -3 points 1y ago
you can do that but I wouldn’t subject myself to working somewhere I don’t like when other businesses pay more since we’re living through the most competitive labor market in decades. Starbucks is paying like shit compared to other fast food companies. but sure, complain and make shit money.
death2capitalism2 1 points 1y ago
just because other companies are paying more does not mean they are paying their workers FAIRLY for their time and work. “If you don’t like it, go somewhere else” is a cowardly response we’ve heard time and time again throughout the history of labor movements. Workers everywhere want to be paid what they are owed, not just “fast food” workers. But sure, tell us to fuck off somewhere else where we’ll still get exploited by multi-billion dollar corporations who continue the cycle because they are never challenged. They will still win no matter where you fucking go. It’s time to stand up.
0x52and1x52 0 points 1y ago
that’s not what’s going on here though and your failure to evaluate the nuance of the situation is harmful. in the op, they state that Starbucks is “inducing panic attacks every day”. if that’s happening then maybe a fast paced job isn’t your cup of tea, and that’s okay! but don’t continue to subject yourself to “daily panic attacks” when there are better, slow paced options available.
yirium 6 points 1y ago
Because idk if you’ve noticed lately but every job in this industry is ass, no where pays enough to live let alone enough to deal with all the bullshit they’re put through, and comparatively as pathetic as it is Starbucks is it’s still considered one of the “better” options for the simple fact they actually offer healthcare no matter how unattainable that is for an actual employee.
0x52and1x52 -5 points 1y ago
pretty much every job pays more than Starbucks lmfao
yirium 5 points 1y ago
I mean $15 an hour when the minimum wage in my state is $7.50 is a pretty fucking big difference
0x52and1x52 -4 points 1y ago
i’m sorry your state hasn’t been working on your behalf I guess? my state’s minimum wage is $15 and starbucks pays $15.50 while every business has signs out with a starting pay of $17-18 lol. they simply aren’t competitive and the quality of the newly acquired labor SHOWS it.
cynicosm 2 points 1y ago
i don't mean to be rude, but i feel like your tone felt a little judgmental given the fact that op is talking about how one of their coworkers passed away. + simply finding a new job isn't that easy. i have people frequently telling me to quit and find a new job because of how unhappy i can be at work, but starbucks offers one of the best insurances in my states for dirt cheap. and during the height of the pandemic when i was homeless, being able to get free food and drink every day helped me so much. plus, its more accepting than other companies might be. so while other places pay more, at least in my case, the low pay rate balances out with the cheap but good insurance and a place where i worry less about facing discrimination from my coworkers. that is just my example of why "find a new job" isn't always realistic, but we do not know op's situation, so let's try our best to be respectful of their pain and their grieving process rn :)
