Thoughts on Howard’s partner video? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by lucyllogan
Hey guys I just watched Howard shultz’s April 4th 50 min vid (I was ecstatic to waste an hour of work watching that) and I was just wondering how to unpack it?? What do you guys think? I thought he was pretty passionate about partners but his very strong anti union stance made me second guess. Let me know your opinions!!

they’re 100% anti union and anti partners. Starbucks does not care what emotional or physical abuse their partners go through while on the job

im sure it’s real easy for howie to spew bullshit rhetoric from up there when he’s never worked a day on the floor. spineless

Back when I was an SM, we had a manager’s conference in Portland, OR. Howard did not attend, but we all sat in a big room and watched a pre-recorded message from him. Although he is an excellent speaker and knows what to say to get people to “buy in” to his message, it felt like I was part of a cult.

I realized that it was time for me to step down and work on leaving at that point. The company has been anti-union for well over 20 years and it seems, from my now customer point of view, that things have gotten worse, not better, for partners.

Now is the time to unionize. This feels like the best opportunity to make it happen. Please don’t let it slip away.

He needs to start doing more for the employees making him money if he's so against unions.

Can they track if we watched it? Idk it wasn't in training modules so i just did all my new modules and didn't watch the vid but clocked my two h anyway cuz it was scheduled?

This morning I saw that Starbucks filed a lawsuit to workers united regarding labor .. saying the union workers are threating and acting violent by banging on windows 🤔

Howard is 100% all in for the partners. I know the vast majorty of you haven't been around long enough to see it, but the guy is taking a 1$ salary, ended stock buybacks in favor of reinvesting in us qnd our stores, and specifically called out the bullshit response Kevin Johnson's leadership had to the Pandemic. There was never anything resembling a national union effort when Howard was in charge the last time because we didn't feel like we needed it. His leadership gave us better benefits than the vast majority of union jobs already had.

There have been multiple union attempts within the company, I believe the first one I can remember was 2004. IIRC there was one before that in the roasteries or the farms or something, but 2004 was what kicked off the general vibe of the company being anti union.

He shut it down in 2004, and that happened every time a store attempted until June of 2021 when Philadelphia won the NLRB ruling stating that Starbucks had illegally terminated employees for attempting to unionise. After that ruling, the efforts in Buffalo kicked off and now we are here with over 100 stores petitioned and somewhere around 20 stores successfully unionised.

It is very well known that Howard is anti-union and he even says as much in his little memoir he wrote.

It's almost as if you didn't read my comment at all. He's anti union at Starbucks because he rightfully believes that Starbucks doesn't need one, he's even stated that unions have a place in the workforce. We already pay 50% higher than the national average for our industry, have benefits that go miles farther than the vast majority of companies in our industry and outside even for part time employees and they're even talking about expanding those benfits further in the near future with more raises promised by the summer of this year. Starbucks has made some bad decisions the last few years under Kevin Johnson, that's for sure, but Howard Shultz is the real deal, and I have full faith that he'll treat me and my fellow partners how we deserve without the need for a third party telling him how to run the company he built.

It's not a third party telling him how to run the company, it's the employees gaining grounds to stand on in the *partnership* (since the company wants to lean so heavily on the term "partner" lol) - it's not like the union organisation is just going to say "hey do this" and he has no choice but to follow. They will be negotiating a fair agreement between the employees and the employer.

They have constantly talked about expanding benefits and increasing pay, and it's typically just them blowing smoke to humour the upset folks. Sure, the benefits and pay are already a bit higher than the industry standard, but that's not the sole point of unionising.

Besides, howard is only stepping in *because* the union efforts have grown so much and they can no longer contain the spread. He was the one that shut things down in 2004, I'm sure they're hoping he'll do it again.

As someone who grew up in a union family, amd worked multiple union jobs themselves, I can honestly say that my job is better at Starbucks without a union than it ever was for me or my parents with one and that's mostly because of the vision Howard Shultz has for what a company should be.
