How does Unionization work? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by roovols
Ok, I’m sure this question has been asked maaaaaaany times, but I’m young and dumb, Lol.

What in the world is a “Unionization”? and how do I know if my store is apart of one?

Thanks

An union is a collective association of workers that advocates for their interests. Businesses that have unionized -- i.e., workers there have formed an union -- have much better wages and benefits. If there is an attempt to unionize at your store, you will know this and be able to vote Yes for a chance to achieve these superior working conditions. If not, you could start your own. The work would involve contacting Starbucks Workers United and convincing your fellow workers to support the idea. However, if managers found out they may try to fire you or retaliate against you (though it would be illegal for them to do that), so you would need to keep it a secret from them.

Unionization is the process of joining or forming a labor union (aka trade union), which is an organization of employees who work together to negotiate better conditions for themselves, like higher pay.

Unionizing is a long and public process. If your store is involved, you would probably know about it already, but at the very least you would be given a chance to vote yes or no on joining a union.
