I find I have bias when individuals with food stamp cards buy Starbucks.(self.starbucksbaristas)

Does anyone else have this frustration? Like if you’re on EBT, aren’t there better things to spend your money on or maybe not buy 7-10 dollar coffee?
caitalonas69 points1y ago
People in poverty are allowed to have nice things too sometimes. You can’t actually spend EBT at most Starbucks and it’s not really your business what they are spending their money on. How do you know that that coffee is not the one thing getting them through the day?

Enjoying things should be available for everyone, Including enjoying an overly expensive coffee every now and then!

It's nice to have a little treat now and then.
There's this opinion that people on government aid should have as little as possible because they don't deserve it if they're not working for it. But is that really any way to live? The whole point of assistance is to improve the quality of their lives.

eh. as someone who grew up on ebt, my mom would like to spoil us sometimes. i do think it can get excessive but tbh i don’t rlly care!

We all work at Starbucks and therefore, most of us QUALIFY TO GET FOOD STAMPS. I am on food stamps. It’s only $250 a month… without my food stamps I have no money to save, but with it, I can actually save money and therefore spoil myself sometimes???? Two income household and even with both our incomes we still barely make enough to just PAY OUR BILLS, let alone food. And it isn’t from irresponsible spending just shitty employers not paying employees.

wow thats a nice way to say “poor people arent allowed to enjoy things”

That’s me admitting that there’s some bias regarding the ethical attributes associated with taxpayer-supported benefits.
[deleted]6 points1y ago
You know only a tiny small percentage of taxes goes towards welfare in general right????? 80% goes towards military, and a ton goes towards government jobs, government funded things in general. Welfare is funded by STATE taxes, not federal, and the state spending the most on welfare, only spends 16% on welfare. That’s New York. Not to mention, NEARLY 97% OF ALL WELFARE GOES TOWARDS OPERATIONAL COSTS (such as hospitals, schools, etc) NOT INDIVIDUALS. But go on about “tax payer money” I wish MORE of taxes went to directly benefiting the people in the country.

Why should they not enjoy a 7-10 coffee like everyone else? If you wanted to judge how they spend their money maybe you should be working welfare and not at Starbucks
iamnotabarbie7 points1y ago
As someone who has a EBT yes I understand that the 7-10 dollars is meant for food that sustains us. However think about it this way chicken and rice is the cheapest thing maybe find a cheep veggie yes while buying something like that is logical bc it’s cheap and has all the nutrients you need its nice to add a bit of spice to it but in total maybe that spice was another meal. But it’s nice to have those things once in a while. I mean I’ve seen homeless buy a cup of coffee. Do they need it to live? No. Is it nice. Imagine if you bought a nice purse or wallet and someone told you that could’ve been a meal for someone else. Or if you buy a 7-10 dollar cup of coffee that could’ve feed a homeless person. There are always “better” things to spend it on. The whole “I pay taxes” thing is also said about teachers, you don’t get to chose what they do “bc you pay taxes n give them their check” i understand where you’re coming from but see it from their perspective.

I don't think conservatives realize that many people on state help do not abuse it. I feel bad when I buy Coke 0 with my card and try to rarely do that.
There are a lot of people that think people on state help shouldn't be able to buy pre-cut fruit and veggies or deli meals/meats either.
As a single parent (and Starbucks barista) that never needed state help until my hubby SAed our child and I had to flee...
Fuck. Off.
[deleted]1 points1y ago
Thank you for fleeing and not leaving you and your children in that situation. Thank you for doing all that you do.

As someone who’s family had to be on food stamps before, it was most likely to get a treat for themselves that they don’t get to have often, only if money permits. Can almost guarantee (besides for the select few who actually DO abuse the system) that they almost never get expensive drinks/food they don’t need. They ARE allowed to enjoy a nice thing every once in a while, nice/more expensive things aren’t JUST for people who aren’t struggling. And I know there’s the whole societal norm of if you normally can’t afford it then don’t get it, but people who are struggling tend to wait until they absolutely can afford it and/or saved up for a while for said nice things. Just my 2 cents tho, I’m sure there are things that can be argued against me/the points I’m making, this is just from my experience in life.

So after doing some research, it turns out that you can actually use Snap benefits at like Tarbucks because it’s “grocery”, ethically, I don’t think that attribute should be allowed because it’s taxpayer money, you know? I’m actually amazed at what people will spend their money on, I personally know if I didn’t have the money for an 8-10 coffee, I wouldn’t buy it, you know?
Remarkable_Hold_23426 points1y ago
And that makes a lot of sense as to why you think that! And I for sure am not judging you on your question or replies, I just know from personal experience it doesn’t happen that often, cause maybe once every 2-3 months(ish, cause sometimes it was longer than that) my mom would take me and my brothers out for just a small treat that she specifically saved some of the money to afford. So if they genuinely are mostly living off of gov help, they aren’t getting the *special* things most people get NEAR as often. I tend to not really think about it but that really may just be because I grew up in and try not to really judge(?), not sure if that’s the right word cause Ik you’re not really trying to judge the people using it. Sorry for the book about this tho, I hate when I over type on things😅

It’s nice to treat yourself no matter if your on state help!!!
dj1ady1 points1y ago
I don’t work at a Starbucks inside a grocery store where I think this form of payment is allowed, but even if it were allowed at mine, who cares? You as an individual aren’t paying their 7 dollar order every time someone comes up with food stamps and I think it’s really ignorant to imply that people who rely on government benefits are spending irresponsibly, anyone should be allowed to enjoy a coffee once in a while
