149**** AMA! Haha (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by piratedashel
Been a partner a while. Ask me what you want.
Dance_partyzone 18 points 1y ago
269, do you believe starbucks is truly worth it? what are you thoughts on starbucks’ progression as a company over the years? ex: more greedy? less greedy? respect between workers and corporate?
piratedashel [OP] 21 points 1y ago
Oof. Alright let me take that point by point.
It’s hard to say because I’ve been here for two (I think) of Howard’s times as ceo.

It’s worth it. Our benefits were 20 hours a week before it was cool. I was paying $25 a paycheck for health insurance. Nuts. They don’t have e to do this (except for that they have to do it now because it’s their trademark)
It’s more greedy now. Look at stock buybacks in the last few years. That’s why Schultz is back, it looks like. Any time I have worked under Howard, it’s been a time where we were surprised with new benefits. I’d love to have a convo with him, but I’m a lowly shift.
piratedashel [OP] 3 points 1y ago
As far as respect between workers and corporate, I have personally seen no difference. Not good or bad. Just no difference.
piratedashel [OP] 3 points 1y ago
269, you’ve been here a while. You know.
Dance_partyzone 4 points 1y ago
i have been here a while but i’ve always wondered what it’s like from the perspective of an ever earlier partner
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee 1 points 1y ago
I'm surprised by that figure for health insurance. I pay over $350 a month for myself and my husband, but I know the second person is more expensive than the first
piratedashel [OP] 6 points 1y ago
For sure! And I pay far more for that myself now. Blame the US healthcare system and not Starbucks for that.
piratedashel [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I used to get insurance for my husband and child. It’s far too expensive for that now. What used to be $250 a month is now $1k a month.
piratedashel [OP] 6 points 1y ago
I remember that after I first started we had the policy of “just say yes.” Omg that was so harmful and all partners hated it. It’s gotten better since then, but we are still dealing with the fallout.
melodiic_ 1 points 1y ago
oh god that policy was terrible! we used to get the worst type of people yelling at us over it
notrachelmar 7 points 1y ago
225**** here! what’s is the silliest drink they’ve come out with since you’ve been here? think about the hardest to make that isn’t even that good

also what old food item do you miss the most?

go to drinks?
piratedashel [OP] 11 points 1y ago
Toffee almond bar. I will say that every time. That, or the mini apple pies.

I only drink coffee with soy milk. (Omg, I did start drinking the kiwi with lemonade every once in a while and everyone at work treats me like a leper for it 😂😂)

Dumbest drink… that’s a tough one. Sometimes I need someone to remind me of a drink we had way back when before I can remember it. Honestly, though, the cloud machiattos were just a giant eye roll. Any of the Frappuccinos that require multiple steps to build. Serious strawberry, unicorn. NO. I TAKE IT BACK. The unicorn Frappuccino was the worst, but only because of the rollout. We didn’t know, and we couldn’t schedule for it. I ended up with 2 part coverage and a line out the door. That drink wasn’t even that good and it was a pain to make. It didn’t help that the morale was real low at the time.

Edited to add: when I was pregnant I would drink the orange refresher with no water everyday and get heartburn. Mad heartburn. NO REGRETS.

Thanks for taking the time to ask!
notrachelmar 3 points 1y ago
i have a coworker who has numbers like yours and all he talks about is lemon bars that starbucks used to have!

the kiwi with lemonade is a sin but i have one coworker who likes it. crazy people! i must’ve started right after the orange refresher because everyone would talk about it but i do miss the lime refresher. i only started to like it right before they took it away :(

honestly i was hoping you would say the cloud macchiato because that has been the dumbest drink since i’ve been here. unicorn frappuccino, i still have nightmares about it. parents screaming at me when we ran out that i ruined their child’s day. we were also understaffed, i remember i worked in the evening and i was solo bar. terrible times.

have you always worked at the same store or have you moved around?
piratedashel [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Oh gosh I’ve been everywhere around here 😂 I couldn’t stay at the same store too long. I don’t remember the lemon bars, unless they were a petite? I know we had a weird time before la boulange where the petites were 2 for 2.50 (A cake pop now is that by itself!!) and we had some weird little guys we sold.
notrachelmar 2 points 1y ago
i’m not quite sure what they were but apparently they were super high in calorie and delicious. i’m the same way though, i’ve worked at like 4 different stores and have somehow made my way back to my first store.

how old were you when you first started?
Zealousideal-Air-235 1 points 1y ago
121 here, the lemon bars were 🔥. They were about the size of the brownies and were a congealed lemon with I believe a lite gram cracker bottom with a slight confectionery sugar topping (if I recall). But do you remember when we first got ovens and had the 2 folded square (pastry things)? I think they were sausage and gravy, or mushroom and something? Those were the best ever and nobody seems to recall them.
Boofasaurus_rex 2 points 1y ago
Vanilla spice, fruity sangria, and orange spiced iced coffee 🤢 bye at ALL of them. Oh also molten hot chocolate (while DELICIOUS) still a no. I ain’t got time for that. 186 here and yes I too am ready for Uncle Howie’s return. I felt more appreciated than with Kev-Dawg 💯
Decent_Wall1380 7 points 1y ago
321, does it get better? less exhausting, easier to handle, etc?
piratedashel [OP] 14 points 1y ago
Eh. You learn to take things in stride or you don’t last. Just recognize what your role/responsibilities are and don’t take any of it home with you.
piratedashel [OP] 6 points 1y ago
Obviously it gets easier with time, but things are constantly changing. You just have to keep your eye on the goal, and keep yourself out of it.
swaggestlord 5 points 1y ago
320, favorite position on the floor? i’ve come to like bar (hot bar) the most when it’s not too chaotic.
piratedashel [OP] 10 points 1y ago
I really fluctuate between favorites. If it’s during peak and I’m not the shift, ovens. That’s my favorite. I’m very good on bar, so that’s where I put myself if we need someone strong there.

Outside of peak-support. Gimme those dishes. I like to be the one in the background making the world go round.
medusas-garden 4 points 1y ago
I was the total opposite, I hated ovens with a burning passion but I put myself there every day bc that’s where I could run the floor efficiently. It’s taboo to put yourself on bar as a shift at my store. I was one of our best bar partners but I only got put on there if I wasn’t the shift.
piratedashel [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Yeah you can’t run the shift at bar.
swaggestlord 2 points 1y ago
i like your answers! i’m usually an afternoon shift and i tend to find myself enjoying the positions that aren’t cleaning since we do a lot of that though.
piratedashel [OP] 3 points 1y ago
As a mid/closing shift I like to be in control of cleaning because I know I can do it faster, if that makes sense? Sure, I have my own stuff to do, but I already know how long that’s going to take me and if we are behind I will just do all the dishes, or clean all the sinks or whatever because I know that’s going to get me out on time.
official_koda_ 5 points 1y ago
I can’t even imagine staying here this long. Im 282 and I’m about to put in my notice. It’s reached a point where I’m so fed up with this job.
piratedashel [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Lol, before I was with Starbucks my longest held job was 9 months. I DEFINITELY did not intend to stay this long. I’m a product of the 2008 recession and the hiring freeze that followed. No one could get a job and you dare not leave the one you have. I’m just lucky it was Starbucks.
NewsLife_247 4 points 1y ago
160 here, do you remember the Starbucks Energy packets? Or how about the whoopie pies?
piratedashel [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Omg I forgot about the Whoopie pies 🤣🤣🤣 I do remember all of it. We kept the energy packets in a drawer next to the bar! Gross.
piratedashel [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Was it the vanilla latte with energy? Was that the drink? Or am I thinking protein
NewsLife_247 1 points 1y ago
You maybe thinking protein. I used to get a Vivanno smoothie almost everyday. I always hated grabbing the bananas with the tongs. The energy packets could go in any drink… “ would you like to add energy to that?” And I think it was like a .50 up charge.
piratedashel [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I remember the energy. I just can’t remember where we promoted it
claudiaisacroc 4 points 1y ago
based on your answers i’m assuming you’re a shift…is it normal for my shift to have me do nothing but dto and register? i started about 2.5 months ago and i’ve barely gotten any bar time. i don’t know how to make more than half of the fraps. every single shift i start on dto until my first break and then i’m on register the rest of my shift and it’s been like this for every single shift. i am not trying to complain but how long would you have a newbie taking orders before you let them work other positions more often?
piratedashel [OP] 6 points 1y ago
Alright, so that’s a store/needs based thing. I wasn’t on bar for the first 9months I was a barista. It was super intimidating. One of the first times I was on bar I had a customer say “can you have someone who knows what they’re doing make drinks?! I am going to be late for my train!”
Man, I cried. It was really demoralizing and people can be so mean. Luckily, my shift said “you’re doing fine. Keep going.”

And I did. And I’m here today! There’s no right answer to your question. I try to switch roles up if we are slow to let baristas have time to practice and I can help them when needed. Don’t blame your shift, they are doing what they think is right, I assume. That’s the other thing. Always assume good intentions. They probably think you’re most comfortable where they put you and why change that up? I’ll tell you why. It’s important to have all baristas know all positions, and that makes the shifts job easier in the long run. If your shift WONT put you on bar to give you time to practice, I would talk to the manager. You can’t get better if you don’t practice and the manager won’t know unless you say something. I like everyone to be on bar before 2.5 months because sequencing is important and bar training is easier if you just continue to give people practice. It’s easier to coach a brand new partner on bar than it is to coach a barista that’s been there a while.
Sashimiroll16 3 points 1y ago
Funniest way someone has mispronounced a drink?

Yesterday, I had someone ask for a “Vort size Mocha-chino” and everyone who heard it on the headset was very confused.

300 partner :
i’m wanting to become a shift . i’ve already trained my first person , and my dm , sm , and i are looking into developing a new project together in how to get more people to come into our store . i guess my question is - what can i do to stand out more ?
piratedashel [OP] 3 points 1y ago
Have a positive attitude. That’s literally it.
cpv_91 3 points 1y ago
117.. I miss mallorca bread. My favorite pastry. And do you remember chanticos??

Also, I've been in only 2 stores. Helped to open both but returned to the first one when the second one was shut down in 2009.
piratedashel [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Omg Mallorca bread! I forgot about that. It’s not something we sold in our area, but we got sent it a couple times. No idea what chanticos are, they never accidentally sent us those 😂
cpv_91 1 points 1y ago
Chantico was an intense dark hot chocolate. We had special for here plates and cups to serve it in. It was so freaking delicious. I'm Colombian and it was very reminiscent of our hot chocolate that is a breakfast staple for us. I want to say that there was a pastry we recommended with it but I can't remember what it was.

Mallorca was the bomb, my daughter and I still lament its passing. 🤣
piratedashel [OP] 3 points 1y ago
😍sounds amazing, never experienced that
mr_epix18 2 points 1y ago
282…. What is been one of your main positive highlights after all these years of working?
piratedashel [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I very much enjoy feeling like I have a second family. People care so genuinely when you get to know them. I know that I do. The store I worked at when I was pregnant, the ladies threw me a baby shower. My manager scheduled the women off the whole day, all the boys worked, and the guys actually all pooled their money together to get me a $300 target gift card for diapers. That store was my favorite, and even though it was years ago I am friends with most of them to this day. The sense of community was just amazing.

Aside from that, I was diagnosed with a chronic debilitating illness some time ago and Starbucks has been great about helping me navigate my new limitations.

I do love working for Starbucks. They’ve been great to me over the years.

Should sbux bring back vivano smoothies?
piratedashel [OP] 2 points 1y ago
No. Lol. I still have the tshirt from the launch! I did like the chocolate banana, but it would require more fridge space, counter space, etc, and we don’t have the room for it like we used to.
joshberry777 1 points 1y ago
Is your store allowed to breathe? Or does your store have a shortage of oxygen as well?
piratedashel [OP] 1 points 1y ago
We have plants for that
DungeonPhoenix 1 points 1y ago
291**** and ssv, what are ways I can make older partners feel valued when I correct their behavior/misinformation? I love my partners and sometimes I have to correct old information, I still value their input, but I've heard talk of "these greenbeans need to listen to the ones who have been here longest!" And want to ensure they don't feel like I'm attacking them when a recipe or standard changes.
piratedashel [OP] 3 points 1y ago
It’s really hard to say. So much depends on the personality of the person you are coaching. Some people are easier than others. Sometimes Starbucks dinosaurs are so set in their ways.
I LIKE to do things correctly. I want someone to tell me if I’m doing something not to standard.
Sometimes I say something along the lines of “I think the recipe is this, but I’ve been wrong before. Let’s look it up”
No joke, I made the brown sugar shaken espresso without cinnamon for MONTHS and nobody said a word to me about it. I use this as an example when I coach people. Like, “hey, I just noticed that you made this drink wrong, I made the brown sugar shaken espresso wrong for 6 months and I was so mad nobody said anything to me! Let me look up that recipe card so we can see how we are supposed to do it for sure.”

I have had people straight up tell me they were not going to change the way they did something, but that doesn’t happen often.

I don’t like the “I’ve been here forever so I’m always right” attitude. It doesn’t allow any room change and we just have to constantly adapt.
Drakoface 1 points 1y ago
How much do you make as a shift after working there for so long? I just had my last day yesterday!
piratedashel [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Depends on the area, but I’m making about $12 an hour more than when I started!
Caffeineadick 1 points 1y ago
What do the numbers at the front of the pistes mean? I’ve seen a few of them
Eastern_Effective_49 1 points 1y ago
What year did you join the company? Favorite drink to make? Least favorite drink to make? Most underrated Starbucks drink (for me, it’s the caramel apple spice)
piratedashel [OP] 3 points 1y ago
When I first started, we had to pay for our own Carmel apple spices 😭 they were my favorite. No partner bevs on those because Starbucks had treetop apple juice bottles 🤷🏻‍♀️
Favorite drink to make, that makes me dance? Iced chai. “Yeaaaah ladddddy. Easiest drink ever.”

piratedashel [OP] 2 points 1y ago
I didn’t even answer the question I’m sorry haha. Literally anything on the “secret menu” because customers expect you to know it because someone posted it on the internet at some point. Nah.
BookDragon1996 1 points 1y ago
Whats the highest position you've had and do you wish you would have gone higher?
piratedashel [OP] 6 points 1y ago
Shift. I’ve been up and down between barista and shift over the years. No, I do not wish I had gone higher. I don’t want my own store. In fact, I’m going to school next fall because I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up 🙌🏻 never did that include manager.

Hi I’m 129, what’s your thoughts on the union in Starbucks
piratedashel [OP] 7 points 1y ago
Ah, come right out and ask, eh? Haha. I don’t have a lot of feelings. I’m a student of history and the Chicago haymarket riots. I support unions and workers rights. I’m not sure that Starbucks is the right company to go after to unionize. I’ve always felt that they were pretty good and ahead of their time as far as pay and benefits. I understand the need for unions, I’m not sure I support Starbucks unionizing. If I had to vote today I would vote no.
collinscreen 5 points 1y ago
You do realize that our benefits came from UFCW back in 1986 and Howard bought the company in 1987 and then union busted? Love Howard’s coffee experience branding, but he has been anti-union from the start. We, the partners, are the union, and we create the value by selling our labor, which turns into profits for the company. We need workplace democracy and a living wage. Read the 23rd & Robinson letter to Howard Schultz
piratedashel [OP] 5 points 1y ago
You say “you do realize” like you expect me to know what happened before I was even born, let alone before I worked at Starbucks. Your approach could be kinder.

No, I didn’t know that. And if Starbucks wants to rule without unions they’ll continue to keep themselves competitive like they have been doing. Like they did ever since Howard was CEO. I respect him a lot.

My experience has taught me we don’t necessarily need unions to get what we need. I’m sorry if that’s not the answer you want to hear.
collinscreen -1 points 1y ago
There are so many proposals regarding benefits and compensation while on the floor that could improve the partner experience and make us truly partners with workplace democracy and a living wage. If you are familiar with labor history, you will know that since the 1960s, productivity has skyrocketed, while wages and union participation have declined. In the 1960s, the United States' middle class was strong. Now, the middle class is deteriorating. Germany has labor representatives on most all of their corporate board of directors and as a result, mostly everybody is middle class. We sell our labor, which is value, which turns into profit for the company. Yet, Starbucks corporate wants to silence our voices and say that we have a seat at the table (the two empty symbolic chairs on the board of directors - one for partners & one for customers, notice no labor representation). This is about reining in corporate power and giving dignity to workers, holding power accountable, and truly becoming partners by embodying actual progressive corporations' labor structure.

Tons of resources. I recommended reading one store’s letter in a previous comment. sbworkersunited.org is another resource.
Now, the ball lies in your court. Let me know if I can help if you decide to come around.

The truth will set you free, but it takes courage, courage to go beyond mindless consistency
collinscreen 0 points 1y ago
Great, so you should support the organizing partners in filing to the NLRB how Starbucks has committed unfair labor practices. You could look up that info too

May I ask what these 3 Digit Numbers mean?
piratedashel [OP] 2 points 1y ago
You’re not a partner, are ya? 😂
roovols 1 points 1y ago
i am, just 2-3 months into this job lol
enbyasha 5 points 1y ago
it’s the first 3 digits of your partner numbers, the lower they are the longer you’ve been with starbucks
