pls help i need to call out bc im having psychosis rn, but i’ve called out a lot this month (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rubysucham1sfit
i’ve called out so much this month bc honestly my mental health is in shambles. and i work in 3 hours and there is no way i can make it thru im scared to leave my room. i have bipolar and i’ve had psychosis before but never this bad. it was so realistic yesterday that i got rly upset and almost confronted a coworker about making fun of me. it’s been happening at work for a couple weeks but it’s getting to the point where it’s rly hard to tell what’s real, one time i “heard” a customer say they wanted no inclusions in their pink drink even tho they apparently just said they wanted that drink. and they were really confused & seemed weirded out when i repeated it back. i feel like a joke in my store bc people probably can tell i’ve been off and even if it’s not true im experiencing hearing everyone say terrible things about me my entire shift. and it was so realistic last night and this morning that im rly scared to go out in public especially to work (i’m hearing my roommates talk abt me etc). my store is super toxic and i know it’ll become a thing if i tell them i’m having psychosis, idk what to do i can get a psychiatrist note but her office is closed until monday so i can’t until then.

have you thought about quitting and getting a different job that isn't so physically and mentally demanding? maybe a change in atmosphere where there is less stimulus would help you psychologically? i dont know much about psychosis so sorry if this is coming across as shallow or something, but it sounds like your work environment is spiralling you into a much worse spot than youve been in before

if you are in love with working at starbucks though i would recommend trying to change stores if you can. i love the job but ive had experience working at stores with toxic environments and working at stores with no toxic environment and the difference is astronomical.

no it doesn’t come off as shallow at all! honestly before my psychosis starbucks was already not the best for me because i also have borderline pd, i might sound like a whiny baby but tbh almost every rly shift triggers me and it’s rly hard to not snap. i usually spiral for a bit after work and i leave almost every shift deep in self loathing bc i feel like my prescence bothers everyone. i had a breakdown at work once where i couldn’t stop crying even tho i rly tried to, and i received a weird attitude from the shifts like i was purposefully inconveniencing them and being dramatic. there is a toxic clique in my store that treats certain people as inferior, i thought i was friends with some of them until i found out they’re making jokes abt me and talk shit abt other ppl at the store too (also pre psychosis haha). so i think that’s a big reason why my psychosis kinda latched onto the idea of everyone hating me and constantly making fun of everything i do. i like the job itself but the environment creating by the shift leads rly effect my mental health, honestly it reminds me of being bullied in school as a kid lol. i’m trying to transfer to my bf’s store right now but it’ll take about 3 weeks since my manager is on vacation. im considering just getting another job so i can work full time, hopefully something that’s not food service. but until then i gotta work to pay rent, i hate money smh. sorry i wrote a lot i always over explain and i apologize if im coming off as dramatic

It sounds like Starbucks isn’t the right fit tbh. I’m sorry that your coworkers suck, that’s never fun :/

😭 come work with me, I'll give you hugs every day

you're not dramatic, i understand completely lol. i'm sure it'd be a dream to work at the same store as your bf but from an outsider's perspective it just seems like there's too much chaos at a job like starbucks for you to be able to prioritize your mental health. which is so (not) funny considering starbucks preaches about how it takes in and helps people with mental health issues...

one of my siblings has extreme anxiety and is having a super duper hard time trying to find a job for basically the same reason. she can't handle that kind of chaos and it drives her crazy. she just got a job as a person at a front desk basically and all she does is answer phone calls. she's doing really well because it's slow and kind of mind numbing.

you guys don't have the exact same type of problem, and i'm not trying to group you in with her, but just from the experience of seeing her improvement makes me think that something like this would apply to you as well.

Call sedgwick and ask for a leave of absence

For real, contact your family doctor if you have one and get a mental health LOA. I wish I did that when I had a break.

I would call out and just tell them that you are having health issues. You can go into more detail if you want but really the specifics are not anyone else's business. As others have said, apply for a leave of absence- you can call Sedgewick at (866) 206-6769. If you qualify you may be able to use sick time or potentially receive short term disability to help make up for the money you are missing by not being able to work. That way you can focus on recovery and taking care of yourself - much more important than any job.

Your mental health is more important, do what is best for you. Don’t worry about them they can take care of themselves

what should i say when i call? i’m just worried they’re gonna think i’m making something up since i’ve called out “sick” so much this month

What have you said the other times?
rubysucham1sfit [OP] 2 points 1y ago
i’ve just said that i didn’t feel good or that i was sick bc i didn’t think they’d let me stay home for mental health
BlondeIPA 2 points 1y ago
I would be honest, explain to the shift what’s happening and why you weren’t able to come in the other times and that today is especially bad. Another thing is to mention that you’re trying to get a hold of your psychiatrist but can’t
