open letter for starbucks to rethink nfts(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Altruistic-Papaya-10
i’m really saddened to hear that starbucks is thinking about launching NFTs by the end of this year, i want to write an open letter to the company and was wondering if anyone would else would be in support of this. i truly cannot stand behind this company much longer if they choose to launch NFTs in the midst of their constant union busting, there’s so many other things they should be focusing on that would actually benefit people wearing green aprons.

It also completely goes against every thing about sustainability they preach. It’s so dangerous.

"hey everyone! we have a plan to scam more money out of everyone as we burn this planet alive! isn't that great!" 🙄 ok
capitalists will do everything in their power to enrich themselves at the expense of all life on earth im so tired

I will support this! I'm an artist when I'm not making coffee and I have gone out of my way and turned down numerous jobs because they had something to do with NFTs. The fact that Starbucks is supposedly committed to being environmentally friendly and yet is going to get into the white boy's MLM club and probably immediately undo any the good they've done for the environment honestly makes me want to quit and boycot.

same! as an artist nfts really boil my blood and to hear starbucks was planning to get into them was so upsetting 🫠

Call me silly but what’s NFT’s?

short answer: NFTs are a scam. they're a form of cryptocurrency that nobody can verify, often "minted" on stolen works of art, and that have very harmful environmental consequences because of the energy they consume.
long answer: remember those companies in the 90s that sold "certificates" which stated you owned a star? there were even tons of late-night infomercials for a while. anyway, those companies made millions of dollars for a handful of people who disappeared with the money not long after, leaving zero records of "ownership" that were never cross-checked or logged in any kind of database. if you tried to look up who "owns" (or paid thousands of dollars for a certificate of) a certain star, you'll likely never find an answer.
NFTs are like that, you're paying for a literal certificate, not the artwork or digital file itself. it's like someone selling you a piece of paper with your name scribbled on it saying that it's the deed to the mona lisa, but in order to see that you own it you need to know that the certificate is kept in a utility closet in the basement of the museum on a certain shelf behind a specific gallon of bleach. nobody will ever know except you and you will have just handed over your house and life savings for a piece of paper. oh and it was sold by someone who doesn't even work for the museum and who never even owned the mona lisa in the first place. and also you can't bring that paper to any official in charge of safekeeping the actual mona lisa because they'll laugh you out of the building.

Non fungible token

Reading the entire long answer above and then reading this comment made me lol

...why did they think NFTs would be the solution to anything?
HanatabaRose3 points1y ago
hope they lose loads of money once the bubble pops. I cant tell if this is just old moneymen trying to cash in on the new trend or if theres some weird cryptobro in upper management somewhere

While I also can't stand their union busting, I personally feel like the NFTs are a good idea that will make a lot of money.
It takes minimal investment, and you can launch a seasonal collection every year. People would go crazy, just like they do for our cups. In my opinion, it's a very small risk that could lead to millions in additional revenue. I'm interested to hear why it would otherwise be a bad idea

1. It's the digital equivalent of a paper receipt: valueless, almost entirely meaningless until several people agree on it's meaning and value. The fact that cryptobros convinced people that a receipt is worth paying for is hilariously asinine.
2. It's still just a receipt: there's no protection for the item you're purchasing. If I buy a cup, that's my cup. I can use it, I can display it, and part of purchasing the cup for some people is having a limited edition item. What exactly is an NFT for? You can get whatever is being sold, such as artwork, for free. It's not difficult.
3. Environmental disaster. We STILL don't have 100% recyclable/compostable cups, a promise Starbucks made over a decade ago, so... Let's encourage vast overconsumption of electricity?
4. It's not free to implement. When stores are struggling for enough labor to serve business need, not even thinking about sanitation, we're investing into a veritable hype bubble.
So it's the equivalent of paying to collect Starbucks graphics, except if you pay for it it costs a ridiculous amount of energy and diverts money from the core business model that is currently struggling hard, and you don't have to pay for it to still have the art/digital thing it says you own.

Just one of these is bad enough sheep listed four. It’s terrible but Starbucks execs are terrible so watch this happen.
cookiemonstah876 points1y ago
I really don't understand how they think NFTs are a good move when they're "trying to be more sustainable." I honestly expect them to almost immediately undo any good they've done in the last decade.
TheycallmeV_1 points1y ago
I was unaware about the massive energy consumption. My belief was it was as easy as setting up a global server.
And in response to the fact that NFTs are valueless, who cares? I'm not buying one and anyone that does is pretty dumb. However I'm pretty sure that's quite a big chunk of Starbucks customer base. Why not take people's money?
Except it's possible eventually NFTs will be used to launder money... so
Btw, Starbucks is not struggling to staff stores. They'd prefer to increase employee workloads to maximize profits. That's obviously their main focus

>I was unaware about the massive energy consumption. My belief was it was as easy as setting up a global server.
Then you really don't know anything about NFTs. I'd suggest reading more about them first.
>And in response to the fact that NFTs are valueless, who cares? I'm not buying one and anyone that does is pretty dumb. However I'm pretty sure that's quite a big chunk of Starbucks customer base. Why not take people's money?
Because it's an unethical product with no value and it's deeply unethical to sell a scam.
>Btw, Starbucks is not struggling to staff stores. They'd prefer to increase employee workloads to maximize profits. That's obviously their main focus
No, they are. The turnover right now is ridiculously short and getting people to even interview isn't easy. But I was addressing the labor algorithm, yes, and I think it makes more sense to invest there than in a literal scam.
TheycallmeV_1 points1y ago
Idk. Starbucks does some unethical stuff. I guess I'm just not surprised from the CEO's point of view

Don’t see the big deal for all the hate. Most nfts are built on the ethereum blockchain which is moving from proof of work to proof of stake. Proof of stake means no mining which solves the environmental part. But they should worrying about that raise we were promised🧐🧐🧐
cookiemonstah878 points1y ago
Maybe Starbucks should wait until ETH is actually on proof of stake. They've been saying they're moving to proof of stake for years and have not made any changes. Plus proof of stake isn't completely energy-neutral, it's just better than mining. Starbucks supposedly cares so much about sustainability and yet is getting into something that is burning the planet.
