Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

Can I be forced to come in for an “all-partners meeting” several hours after my shift ends? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by thebestdaysofmyflerm
My manager has told me to work a full shift starting in the morning, come back for an hour-long meeting after closing, and then open the next day. The meeting is paid, but with my lengthy commute I would either have to spend nearly an hour’s worth of wages on gas, or spend several hours waiting for the meeting to start. Either way I’m left with hours of unpaid labor and not nearly enough time to sleep.

Is there any rule against this? What should I say to my manager?

I don't think he's "allowed" to just say you don't have to go, these meetings are being pushed by corporate. My SM is trying to work with a couple of other stores to get coverage so we can have the meeting midday during the week.
thebestdaysofmyflerm [OP] 26 points 1y ago
Midday would be so much more reasonable. Zoom would be even better.
aee78 13 points 1y ago
I don't think they're allowing zoom, cause you could possibly record it, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.
My SM is struggling to get it covered as far as I can tell from what I over heard her saying to another SM while I was doing the pull. I also got the impression, neither of them wanted to be having the meeting in the first place.

But I'm not sure they can do anything if you just don't show up. I think they just need to say your presences is strongly preferred, but not 100% as my store hasn't done it yet.

>I’m not sure they can do anything if you just don’t show up

Maybe, it would be a scary gamble though. I wish I could just be frank and ask if I will be fired if I don’t attend, but I imagine that would make things worse.

Also, do you know what the meetings are about?
aee78 7 points 1y ago
I don't. I wasn't eavesdropping per say as they knew I was there behind them and didn't try to whisper, but I wasn't part of the entire conversation either. I did ask what it was about and was told it's about everything going on in the company recently. I kind of assume that means union stuff, but don't couldn't tell you for sure.
BeardiesRule112 -5 points 1y ago
You won’t be fired if you don’t go. That’s ridiculous. It’s a fuckin coffee shop.
Gemma_V 5 points 1y ago
Why the heck not record it anyway??
And if you have to work in less than 8 hours when you clock out you’re owed time and a half by Starbucks standards
Dsgrcfl 3 points 1y ago
My manager said since it was on the official schedule we would get a final write up for not showing up
aee78 1 points 1y ago
That's ridiculous.
Riversbewild 1 points 1y ago
We did ours in pods. I was the only one who signed up for that pod, so we did it over Microsoft teams app.
justalurker5555 18 points 1y ago
I would 100% not attend, but I don’t know the official policy. Also, your u/ is S-tier.
thebestdaysofmyflerm [OP] 5 points 1y ago
Thanks. I kind of regret complaining to my boss now, it would have been easier to get away with not going if he didn’t already know the reason.
accountedthrowaway5 16 points 1y ago
nah i don’t think you can. we had a store meeting where several people couldn’t come in for whatever reason, plus the openers were allowed to
Leave early because they were coming in the next day. i think you should talk to your manager and let them know that you won’t be able to attend the meeting. it’s not a forced thing
thebestdaysofmyflerm [OP] 5 points 1y ago
I already texted him about it and explained why it doesn’t work for me, and he said it’s mandatory. It seems that my options are to capitulate, ask him again, escalate, or skip the meeting and hope for the best.
BeardiesRule112 6 points 1y ago
Skip the meeting. Your availability is your availability. I’ve never once gone to a “mandatory” meeting in 3+ years, ain’t shit happened to me. They can suck it.
sheep_heavenly 5 points 1y ago
It's legally not, if the meeting is primarily anti-union.

If you're feeling mildly spicy, I'd mention that being strong armed into attending a meeting that disrupts your work/life balance is a reason people would feel encouraged to unionize, not discouraged.
nonogender 1 points 1y ago
do you know why it's supposedly mandatory? like are you a shift supervisor? even then i've never seen a mandatory meeting happen at my store amongst anyone.
missgurll 0 points 1y ago
lmfao all he can really do is write u up
Ok-Bowl4392 10 points 1y ago
I feel like so many stores are having meetings and extra training but my store isn’t doing anything. Not sure why
dfresh3000 5 points 1y ago
Your SM can schedule you outside your availability per the partner guide. I know stating so may be unpopular here, but clarity is kind.

That said, talk to your SM. State your concerns and your willingness to work with them to find a solution that benefits your both!
jazzysoranio 5 points 1y ago
I don’t advocate lying, BUT this is such an awful situation, if it were me I would probably just keep acting like I was planning to go and then 30 minutes before just call and say my car keys are missing and I can’t find it. Since it takes you longer than 40 minutes to get there what are they gonna do?
Assiqtaq 5 points 1y ago
If you really don't want to, tell him you are unavailable at that time. They can't force you to be available, they really can't. You don't need to explain it either. Just tell them you have somewhere you need to be, that is rather personal and you don't feel comfortable discussing it with an employer. And so sorry, but he'll have to fill you in later.
B0redBarista 3 points 1y ago
Hi! As an ASM who just led the meetings that your SM is probably scheduling I can say that it is mandatory and is counted as a missed shift if you don’t attend. I do know it really sucks - I had several partners who chose to stay at the store until the meeting or who were able to leave and come back. I will say I was able to talk to my DM and get approval for doing 3 smaller meetings instead of one so it sucked less for my openers and we didn’t have to do them after close. I also sent partners to a neighboring store so they could do it while the store was open. There are some creative solutions if your DM is willing to allow it. I would very respectfully explain your concerns and offer some of the solutions I listed. He might be able to make one work!

Edit: After reviewing comments further down - SMs do widely vary in their enforcement of attendance at these meetings - so the best approach is talking it out with him. But to those saying you can’t be scheduled outside your availability, according to the Partner Guide you can be required to come in at times outside of your availability.
BeardiesRule112 4 points 1y ago
I’ve missed every single shitty “mandatory” meeting in 3.5 years and it was never, ever counted as a missed shift. What the hell are you even talking about? I’ve had 9 SM’s in that time and NONE of them did this bullshit.
B0redBarista 0 points 1y ago
Well considering that the last 3.5 years was mainly COVID I would imagine there weren’t that many mandatory meetings 🤷🏻‍♂️ it also sounds like like maybe your SM’s didn’t care that much seeing how you went through 9 in 3.5 years?

Also kind of fail to see how adhering to the Partner Guide is “bullshit”

Oh and we don’t like scheduling those meetings any more than you like attending them - it’s a real pain because partners like you tend to complain and it takes a huge chunk out of our non-coverage budget.
BeardiesRule112 3 points 1y ago
I would hate to work under you, take care!
B0redBarista 1 points 1y ago
And I would likewise hate to manage you 🙃

>But to those saying you can’t be scheduled outside your availability, according to the Partner Guide you can be required to come in at times outside of your availability.

Which is why there's a union push lol, this among other reasons. Availability is barely respected as is, to have it disrespected for a very legally grey meeting intended to intimidate and discourage any union support is amazingly tone deaf even for corporate.
tbb10 0 points 1y ago
As someone who’s worked multiple union jobs. That won’t change. It will just most likely take them longer to fire you for missing your shifts
sheep_heavenly 2 points 1y ago
That's not been my experience in a union or at Starbucks, the process to fire someone with cause is ridiculously long. I'll be glad to have protections against being randomly fired the way I've seen baristas let go in the past.
Any-Area8729 2 points 1y ago
Ask them if there's a way to have you on zoom or just phone call for the meeting
CrypticPearls 2 points 1y ago
One my old store managers told me that they couldn’t schedule two shifts within 8 hours of each other unless we approved it. Not sure how it works by state
Hyjinnks 2 points 1y ago
Most of these meetings that have been happening across the board are “100% mandatory” and literally just about unions
Lauri925 2 points 1y ago
Ask if you can go to a different stores meeting closer to home maybe? Our store had barustas from another store come work drive through while we had our store meeting... just another idea
Babs9220 2 points 1y ago
Usually my stores had multiple meetings and the week was scheduled so almost nobody had to wait/come back for their meeting. I've also gone to another store's meeting, same information. You can see about finding one closer to home? Maybe it'd be a better day or time for you too.
Responsible_Snow7109 2 points 1y ago
No u shouldnt get fired for not attending if u just say u cant go for a personal reason. Ive been with starbucks for a teeny bit over 2 years now. The first meeting we had at the store, my manager closed the store 1 hour early and every single person was there. Then the second meeting was this past one less than a month ago talking about wat was in howards video and talking about benefits and wat we can do to make things better at the store. We also closed 1 hour early for the second meeting as well but the second meeting, not everyone came. My manager said beforehand that whoever couldnt make it can let her kno and she will do mini little one on one meetings with them
Nancy208 1 points 1y ago
It would be considered a split shift in most states. Check your local labor laws
joshberry777 1 points 1y ago
If the meeting falls outside of your availability, don't show up. Tell them you had something else going on. If they try to fire you over it you can sue them.
BenTeHen 1 points 1y ago
Depends on the state/county
verdeuce 1 points 1y ago
Call the prsc if you are being forced to work less than 8 hours between your shifts
Emarie2200 1 points 1y ago
Every time I see these posts abt mandatory meetings I wonder why my store has never held one. Lol
pink-smoke 1 points 1y ago
So a meeting should be scheduled as non converge, and should be on the dcr. I’m pretty sure Starbucks policy says that you cannot be scheduled more than 8 hrs without consent, and if it’s not in your availability then there’s that too. Unfortunately, you’re gonna have to tough it out if it’s on the schedule, but you can certainly let your dm know.
Also- I’ve worked at two stores and usually for a store meeting the meeting either melts into your shift or all you have scheduled is the meeting. I would also ask your dm if your manager is allowed to schedule you to come back after a shift is complete.
m3a9an 1 points 1y ago
Can you FaceTime during the meeting? One of the partners at my store had to do that because they have kids and are a single parent.
BeardiesRule112 1 points 1y ago
NO
drinkliquidclocks 1 points 1y ago
They aren’t going to fire you for not coming to a meeting… say something came up, your cat is sick 🤷🏻‍♀️ obviously you won’t want to miss meetings repeatedly but if this one in particular is super inconvenient just don’t go
