Got promoted as Shift lead this month and I want to quit. (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by beeechass
I was super excited and ready to take on the responsibilities of a shift lead but the amount of customers and mobiles are making me want to quit. Customers have been so, so incredibly rude and my mental health is getting worse. I don’t know what to do since I just got promoted and I love my team but I’m at the point where I can’t go a shift without crying on my break.
Any suggestions?

All my shifts quit bc it was so horrible, only have ONE left at a 65k/ week DT store. My advice is either demote, transfer or quit. It ain’t going to get any better.

I’m really close to doing it. I don’t even want to demote because it’s just the job and customers at Starbucks itself that’s making me feel this way. I use to love working here until mobile ordering blew tf up and it’s nonstop now.

Yup, peak lasts all day now. Between cafe, DT, mobiles, and delivery it’s a shitshow. I dread going in. Good luck to you friend.

Use the fact that you were technically in a management position to get a new job!!

Since this is so new for you, and a pretty big change I would really recommend utilizing Lyra just to talk it out with someone and get some support. Or even headspace to just decompress.

But the biggest piece of advice I can give you is not to take things too seriously. Obviously, you should try (and want) to do a good job, but bad customers and crazy volumes of business are always going to be there. You’ve gotta learn how to let things roll off of you and focus on what you can do in each moment instead of holding on to the stress and frustration. I know that’s easier said than done, which is why I recommended Lyra or headspace.

Or if you feel comfortable and trust your manager I would have a conversation with them. Ask for more support in the ways that you need it.

Yes, thank you so much! I actually was looking into Lyra today. I think the main thing for me is that The customers at my store make me feel like I am so less than. The way they complain about having 2 more ice cubes than they wanted (yes this happened) and throwing their card/money at me I just hate it. Getting milk and syrup splashed all over my face and arms because of how busy it is. I hate it. I want to go into an office so badly now. Just working in front of a computer sounds like a dream.

Don't get caught up in the grass is greener on the other side mentality. Being in an office won't change how people treat you less than. You need to realize and come to terms that people's reactions are just a deflection of what's falling apart within them. Allowing their actions to control your emotions is definitely something lyra can help you with. They don't have perspective or compassion. Or the same views as you, doesn't excuse how they act but it does mean there will always be that gap in misunderstanding.

I’m just a barista and I don’t want to move up to shift specially for these reasons. It’s incredibly stressful and just not worth the mental strain. Your mental health is more important. Put in my two weeks and I’m excited to be done

I was hired on as a shift and hated it. Took a leave and came back as a barista. Then got talked into promoting back up, but that's what finally killed it for me and I quit.

Kinda similar story here. I got hired as a shift, couldn't take it, and dropped down to barista. For the sake of money I'm working my way back up, but my mental health has been so much better since the demotion

That's how I felt about getting promoted again, I couldn't really afford to be a barista or even a shift, so shift was at least the better option of the two in that way..

I suggest going to a licensed store. You'll probably get paid less, but it's just a simpler store setup. There's only one kind of order. The only time there's a backup is when some asshat orders ten drinks (which is rare, honestly) or a barista refuses to follow the "don't take any more orders if the queue is four or more drinks" rule.

Since ure the shift u can set boundaries on some of the customers behavior. U can only do this if ur sm and dm is on the side of the employees. When I first got back to Starbucks, one of my shift said if anyone is rude etc, let me handle it, I’ll kick them out. She’s fair. U can do that too just don’t be like some shifts out here thinking they own their baristas and just shit talk customers for no reason

So about a week ago, a GM from a struggling drive thru (different company, not SB) came through our drive thru (I'm a barista, at a 100k+/wk SB) and said he is leaving his bonus on the table every quarter, bc his fast food place can't hit their drive times. Came back through and said he always has an awesome experience from me, offered me 50k to AGM his place and focus on the drive thru, that normally they'd only offer an AGM 40k, but he'll assume I'll earn the store the bonuses and start me at 50k. I dunno what to do. I didn't expect that. I've never managed, can't even get my SM to promote me to SSV, lol.
