New and current wages (self.starbucksbaristas)

Hi so I heard that Starbucks is raising their minimum pay to $15 an hour in the summer and was wondering if the current pay is okay enough to stick it out till then? I applied for a job on March 9th and got an email back today asking for an interview even though I was told they would call me the next Monday because I went to the store and left my phone number 5 days or so after applying which doesn’t give me much hope for the management team but it is almost summer so I’m wondering if I should go in for the interview or not. My last job paid $9 an hour and also had awful management and it was NOT worth it for me as someone who is chronically ill and experiences a lot of pain from standing for so many hours. I’m 16 (17 in June) and would be a part time barista in small town in Texas if that affects anything

Honestly, if you have a chronic illness and don’t do well with lots of standing, starbucks probably isn’t a good fit for you.
It’s a *very* active job that involves being on your feet and running around the whole time. It’s like 20% making drinks and food for customers and 80% cleaning and other laborious tasks.
And being in Texas, you’ll likely only get one ten minute break for a max of 5.75 hours on the floor.

But if you can manage at least 3 hours running around on your feet at a time before you get ten minutes to sit down maybe you’ll be ok.

Also, I would guess Texas pays similarly to the Midwest and the south, which is around $12 and change for baristas right now.

It depends on the market you work in. Some locations are around 10-11, others average 14-16. Even in the same state it can vary (I.e. NY city being min. 15 while Syracuse is around 12.50) if you work in a major city odds are it will be a higher base pay however not guaranteed to be necessarily competitive, but I’ve never been paid less than 10 even in a slower market

It’s probably between $13.50-14.00
