Question (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Caffeineadick
Can my manager not give us tips? My SM recently has started saying she’s gonna stop giving us our tips if our customer connections don’t come back up soon. This is my first job and I rely on those tips for gas money.
BeardiesRule112 675 points 1y ago
LMFAO REPORT THAT BITCH. That’s beyond illegal.
piratedashel 440 points 1y ago
Your manager shouldn’t even be touching the tips lol. That’s part of your wages and it’s very illegal.
Dance_partyzone 330 points 1y ago
that’s incredibly illegal, if you don’t have the confrontation skills literally DM me and i’ll put in an anonymous report against that store. they would be fired upon HR even hearing it
snarkysnape 23 points 1y ago
🏅
_ANDLEE_ 14 points 1y ago
You dropped this 👑
Due-Ear8105 137 points 1y ago
Highly not okay and you should report her
overturned23 96 points 1y ago
uhm yeah that’s illegal… they can’t even touch tips
SonOfThespis 81 points 1y ago
This is insane and insanely illegal, I'd report it to PCC real quick. This is unreal. Not only that, but how is making you guys scared and desperate supposed to make you happy and cheery to bump your CC scores up?
friendlySkeletor 80 points 1y ago
That's extremely illegal. There's basically no circumstance where employers are allowed to withhold tips or even take tips. Report that shit immediately bc even threatening to do so could land her in hot water
codifeddevelopment 68 points 1y ago
….bruh your store needs to unionize like yesterday
C0ffeeCoffeeC0ffee 14 points 1y ago
sbworkersunited@gmail.com
Caffeineadick [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Does Canada do the union thingy?
noahaiken 8 points 1y ago
Omg this manager is done lol
codifeddevelopment 2 points 1y ago
There’s a unionized Starbucks in BC
codifeddevelopment 2 points 1y ago
Yes!!!!
DarlingMollie 55 points 1y ago
If you have a record of her saying that (text/email/multiple witnesses) call Ethics and Compliance (PCC). This kind of garbage will be dealt with, especially if she's made similar threats before
PerspectiveCapable98 25 points 1y ago
Get that bitch gone that’s a bitter bitch breaking the law bc she thinks that a effective teaching method, throw that bitch to the curb. Respectfully🤗
Responsible_Snow7109 7 points 1y ago
Lmao respectfully followed by the emoji. Haha i love it. True as f tho
Caffeineadick [OP] 20 points 1y ago
Thank you all for your help, as of right now we got our tips yesterday I will be counting down the days and if it reaches more then 30 days before my next tips I’ll go to my dm, if that doesn’t work I’ll be taking it to hr
Comfortable-Plane944 31 points 1y ago
I’d still go to HR- just threatening that is super illegal and they’re pulling that type of nonsense im sure they’re doing other things that make for a shitty environment
ellarian_3896 23 points 1y ago
I would still report it asap. Tips are supposed to be done weekly by an hourly employee (i.e. a barista or a shift supervisor) never an SM or ASM. If you aren’t receiving your tips weekly then there is already a problem. I would put in an anonymous report to PCC and in the meantime keep record of anything that strikes you as problematic. When you put in an anonymous complaint they will ask you when incidents occurred, if you reported them to anyone, if anyone else witnessed the incident, and other things along those lines. I would write the dates, approximate times, and what they said/ did so you can report it as accurately as possible.
Caffeineadick [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Thank you so much!! I’ll start writing it down
BeautifulSoul212 7 points 1y ago
Yes! You should most definitely be receiving them weekly!! I do tips for my store every single week. If you’re only getting them once every 30 days then something is wrong. And if you’re getting them once every 30 days…then you should be getting a decent amount for around 4 weeks worth of tips in one lump some.
jordanshaw89 4 points 1y ago
Hi friend, are you at a store in the United States? If so your cash tips should be distributed weekly? I wouldn’t wait even that long, I’d go straight to HR right now
Caffeineadick [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I’m at a store in Canada, from my understanding she can withhold them from us for two pay periods so 28 days max
jordanshaw89 8 points 1y ago
Not trying to pester but is that a Canadian law or is that Starbucks policy? I would still call PCC and at least check with them if that is Starbucks policy or if she’s just going with what is technically legal?
creampuffs_ 3 points 1y ago
idk how it works at your store but at my store, we get our tips every week (tuesday)
Avuneon 19 points 1y ago
Search for a pro bono lawyer that will take the case. Bring up the subject of punitive damages. You can go after the SM and probably the company as well, because they should have trained the SM to know that that was illegal AF to even suggest. Get all your coworkers in on it.
im_feeling_cold 17 points 1y ago
shoot her a text asking her to clarify what she meant. if she replies with the same thing, then boom you’ve got it in writing. you hit the jackpot.
Caffeineadick [OP] 4 points 1y ago
I 100% would however my store has a firm policy on never contacting the manager if absolutely necessary we go to our shifts and they do it:/
jordanshaw89 6 points 1y ago
Hi again, what do you do if you are sick? Call your shift instead of manager? That is another breach of policy on her end, as baristas are supposed to contact the manager in the event of illness, which is outlined in the illness policy
Caffeineadick [OP] 2 points 1y ago
We call in to the store and speak with the shift on the floor
anxiouspeony 5 points 1y ago
Your manager sounds horrible and not at all upholding the standards of a Starbucks store manager. Have never heard of a manager so terrible. Report them to your DM among other things too, this is absolutely horrible
beeleanza 3 points 1y ago
Yeah no- Starbucks policy is speaking with the sm on duty AND speaking with the Manager as well. I don't know where in your policy it says you aren't allowed to contact your manager but I know for a fact it's not in the Starbucks policy
croissantboyy 12 points 1y ago
The store manager isn't even allowed to TOUCH the tips, let alone refuse to give them to you. if you have a decent DM i would escalate this to them bc your SM is essentially saying she's going to commit theft.
Caffeineadick [OP] 4 points 1y ago
My DMs favourite manager is my SM I’m thinking I’m gonna have to go above both there heads somehow
croissantboyy 5 points 1y ago
yeah definitely go to like the regional or something. and also let them know why you couldn't go to your DM about it too. that's not cool
croissantboyy 3 points 1y ago
also try and see if you can get a recording of her saying it too. then she can't deny it. but double check your state laws and make sure you live in a one party consent state (meaning you only need the consent of one party, i.e you, to consent to filming or recording and that she can't say it's illegal to record her without her consent)
Necessary_Low939 11 points 1y ago
No she cannot do that wtf.
BlondeIPA 11 points 1y ago
I feel like that’s illegal and if it’s the case I’d quit lol
You’re entitled to those tips you earned
piratedashel 24 points 1y ago
It is illegal, and I wouldn’t quit- if this is actually happening it’s something they can rectify pretty quickly.
Responsible_Snow7109 7 points 1y ago
That sounds like a trashy thing to say. Definitely report her even upon still receiving ur tips. She needs to not do that or even say it. To anyone. If thats the type of shit thats goin thru her head (besides her sayin it) then imagine wat other illegal shit shes doing without anyone at ur store knowing. Thats a toxic human. Get her outa there cuz she does not deserve to be in charge of a business sayin shit like that
looker009 7 points 1y ago
Sure she can if she wants to get fired. That is also the quickest way for manager to get fired
dfincher384 6 points 1y ago
Even my manager knows they can’t do that, and they’re a sociopath
Financial-Row9611 6 points 1y ago
please update us after reporting bc this is insane
mastaofdeath 6 points 1y ago
Call your DM and PRSC ASAP.
Aliciarox11189 6 points 1y ago
SM are salaried and not allowed to touch it by company policy...
heytherecomputer 5 points 1y ago
Illegal illegal illegal, call the Department of Labor and get their ass fired.
jazzysoranio 5 points 1y ago
That is absolutely ILLEGAL. And I’m not just saying that. It actually is.
Fun-Macaron-9007 4 points 1y ago
Holy shit. Report her to ethics and you’ll get a new SM TOMORROW lol
BlondeBeast96 4 points 1y ago
No, you are entitled to your tips. That might be a labor law violation depending on your state.
Caffeineadick [OP] 4 points 1y ago
I’ll have to look into Canadaian labour laws
poopylilbutt 3 points 1y ago
Nope lol
Js_On_My_Yeet 3 points 1y ago
Report her.
deviouskat89 3 points 1y ago
Call Partner Resources, the Ethics hotline, or your District Manager.
anxiouspeony 2 points 1y ago
Don’t let this slide just because you got your tips. Store managers like this need to learn and be disciplined or they will just get worse and worse and push as much as they can get away with doing to you guys. Get that bitch fired
Purplestanny11 2 points 1y ago
Fucking no. That’s literally taking away part of your legal income. Absolutely fucking not okay. Report her.
[deleted] 2 points 1y ago
very illegal. even if she tries to backtrack and say she's kidding or something, that's still not okay. wages are not something to joke about. don't talk to her about it just report her, you won't get in trouble
TRoseee 2 points 1y ago
Super illegal.
someginger6 2 points 1y ago
Not only is that illegal it’s also Starbucks policy that Managers can’t handle tips at all so she’s breaking two rules
_hippocat 2 points 1y ago
Report her!!! Our sm isn’t been allowed to TOUCH our tips let alone take them away
heytherecomputer 2 points 1y ago
Illegal illegal illegal, call the Department of Labor and get their ass fired.
roovols 2 points 1y ago
collectively agree to not improve the connections, and do nothing about the Tips. Then after 1-2 months, sue her and get rich. 😀😀😀😀
ItzBoogieMan 2 points 1y ago
FIRED lmao
Acedre123 2 points 1y ago
That definitely has to be illegal WHAAAAAT lol
victorious_gem 2 points 1y ago
I hope she's joking bc that's definitely not okay
Caffeineadick [OP] 3 points 1y ago
I am too if it’s just a joke ((she sounded serious tho)) it’s not a funny one and if it isn’t a joke im gonna get her fired.
HamburgIar_ 2 points 1y ago
Your manager isn't even allowed to handle tips, much less prevent you from receiving them.
Caffeineadick [OP] 1 points 1y ago
Hi everyone another update: My ssv was talking to me and she slipped in that my manager was previously holding our tips. And reading these comments have me decide I can not wait to go to my RM ((one step above DM as I don’t trust my dm to solve this issue without me losing my job)) thank you for the feedback everyone I will update again if one of us get fired🥰
Anngggiiiee 1 points 1y ago
Uh Fuck her. Tell your DM! thats your money. She has no right to keep it from you
dumpst3rfirre 1 points 1y ago
I would definitely report that, I actually had a manager try and withhold tips from us the other day cause some of us weren’t participating in partner of the quarter nominations

So, store manager input- email your SM for clarification to avoid the no contact rule (they can respond during working hours), contact partner resources, and ask your DM to set up a meeting or call with you and let them know what’s going on. I know it can seem intimidating to talk to a DM, but that behavior is not ok, and often, unless partners bring it to their attention (especially is the store is performing well otherwise), the DM doesn’t usually have details of what’s going on in the store. I can’t imagine any decent DM standing for that kind of behavior. There have been times due to staffing constraints/vacations for our usual tip person that they’ve been a little late, but that should be communicated to the team, and the only real reason tips might not be distributed exactly every week. Good luck, and if you need any extra support, feel free to shoot me a message, and I can find some resources for you. You’d be surprised how much and what you can find on the hub.
bottlehalffull 1 points 1y ago
The store manager shouldn't be touching the tips unless they are running the floor and just to take it out of the safe. Any shift should be able to access the tips at any time. If they withhold tips, report them immediately. I'd report the threat, but I'm petty.
femalehomosapien18 1 points 1y ago
Managers aren’t even allowed to basically loo may tips, report her to the NLRB
no0dles130 1 points 1y ago
Omg you need to call pcc like quick
CompassesByNorthWest 1 points 1y ago
And Starbucks wonders why partners are wanting to unionize 🙄
angryairheadaries 1 points 1y ago
uh… in short, no. she can’t.
Brief_Coat6526 1 points 1y ago
Your SM is full of shit..get it in writing then have them fired
mama_bibi 1 points 1y ago
I worked at a license store before corporate and if we no call no showed our tips for the week we're taken. If you were late a decent chunk of time/called our without notice a days worth was taken. If the deposit/safe was short...yup. came out our tips.

Honestly though it stopped people with bullshit call outs and showing up consistently late all the time so as someone who is reliable it was at least worth it to see people not get away with shit...

Also still pretty messes up all in all
greyplains 1 points 1y ago
You need to report to ethics, PCC, AND your DM! No SM can take away the tip program unless they've discussed it with the DM & RM (even then it's rare, the only instances would be a high theft case store. Even then that still sucks because tips aren't guaranteed or insured).

This is considered retaliation and withholding of wages, so you have a pretty solid complaint...
ItsJHos 1 points 1y ago
Your tips are to be done only by an hourly employee, your SM can not lay a hand on your tips AT ALL.
philosopher_cat_lady 1 points 1y ago
Definitely sounds illegal
Remarkable_Hold_2342 1 points 1y ago
That’s…not allowed, report that shit to your DM or someone higher if they don’t do anything
