They got here and asked "Why is it empty???" WHAT WAS THE THOUGHT PROCESS (reddit.com)
submitted by Coffee-Bae
mulderufo13 158 points 1y ago
I love it when they ask for no ice in a refresher or latte and then wonder why their drink is warm. Like lol outsmarted the baristas. Also tho I would never ask for no ice in a shaken espresso drink lmao that’s so dumb, just ask for light ice if anything.

Nate or Jess. Did they know they can share one account or make separate ones w/ their own names ? It’s like couples that share a fb account
canidieyet_ 73 points 1y ago
lol we have a woman who orders teas no ice/no water because they’re too cold and hurt her teeth. valid, because extra cold things hurt my teeth too.

BUT she orders like 6 trentas and we have to make a new batch of tea every time. so half of them will be really warm. we can’t make extra in advance because she mobile orders randomly 😭
cynicosm 31 points 1y ago
maybe so its so they accumulate points faster? i know a lot of couples who share sbux accs
dankmobile 40 points 1y ago
but why not just use one name?? i know plenty of women who come in picking up drinks for “Jeff” and no one thinks much of it
dancingthemamba 38 points 1y ago
dang!! how many girlfriends does Jeff have
dankmobile 12 points 1y ago
LMAOi just used a random name as an example 😭 that would be hilarious tho
hailvy 9 points 1y ago
My dads name is Jeff. He’s on wife #3 right now
cynicosm 1 points 1y ago
idk! i guess you’ll have to ask these many Jeff’s lol!!!
SlippingStar 3 points 1y ago
My spouse and I share to accumulate points after.
b99__throwaway 3 points 1y ago
my husband & i share bc i have my partner discount lol
ieatpie888 144 points 1y ago
This is a problem at our store too it’s so annoying- this is how we do it as well. The ice is literally the drink so don’t give me a frownie face when it looks like this lol
International_Love45 94 points 1y ago
Right!! I had a lady come through and get mad when she ordered a Frappuccino with no ice and the cup was basically empty 😭
kikuuq 88 points 1y ago
Have had a few mobile orders of fraps with no ice, made it and still blended the liquid. They came in and were like um this doesn't look right and I said well you ordered it with no ice, it's still blended but with no ice.
they looked at it for a bit before saying sorry, I was a bit confused when ordering it and I replied with its okay, I was confused when making it

Ended up just making it correctly for them.and we had a laugh
777BABYDOLL777 74 points 1y ago
"I was confused when making it" LMAOO 💀😂
mama_bibi 29 points 1y ago
I use to work next to this nail salon and these two women would come in all the time and get coffee Fraps not blended. It was strange and like for some reason I was the only one that made it the way they wanted it so they loved me but like "your drink is not a drink ma'am thats why it's made weird eveytime"

But also I don't know how people messed it up cause all I did was build it the way I would in the blender but inside the cup
Comfortable-Plane944 47 points 1y ago
Lol a Frappuccino with no ice what the actual fuck
Coffee-Bae [OP] 22 points 1y ago
So many times 💀
Detantevandaisy 3 points 1y ago
Oh my GOSH the fight I got on the other day because the female dog’s cup wasn’t full when ordering a frappuccino without ice 💀. I made it correctly, why do I have to compensate for YOUR lack of ingredients??
jjd_yo 25 points 1y ago
Ah, I love some sugary coffee soup
impasse602 117 points 1y ago
This happened to me the other day too! I had to explain that, if they want no ice thats how its going to come out.
cookiemonstah87 93 points 1y ago
Similar issue I had a few days ago. Someone ordered a grande iced mocha in a venti cup. I made it to the grande line, added the normal amount of ice, put whip on, and then used a flat lid because a lot of people in our store order drinks with whip in the next size cup so they can have a flat lid.

A few minutes later, the customer comes over, aggressively saying "excuse me! What is this??? Why is there so little liquid in this cup??? I ordered it in a venti cup, shouldn't the cup be full???"
"Well you ordered a grande drink in a venti cup. You're still getting the same drink you would get in a grande cup, the only difference is that the cup is bigger."
"This is ridiculous. I expect the cup to be full!!!"
"In that case, I can transfer it to the cup meant for the size drink you ordered, if you'd like"
"WHERE'S THE MANAGER??? THIS IS ABSURD!!!"
Shift appears behind me, asks what the problem is, she explains, shift looks at the sticker and says "this drink is made correctly based on what you ordered. Did you maybe intend to order a venti, not a grande in a venti cup?"
"NO, I ORDERED A GRANDE BECAUSE IT'S CHEAPER, BUT THE CUP SHOULD BE FULL!!!"

My poor shift had to explain to her how sizing works, and that ordering a larger cup size doesn't mean getting that size drink for the smaller size's price. The price is determined by the volume of the drink, otherwise people would be ordering talls in trenta cups all day, every day. The customer still didn't understand and said she was going to call corporate. Shift just smiled and waved and said "OK, have a nice day!"
bjinks414 53 points 1y ago
Cheap ass people are annoying. It’s similar to the people who run down the line and yell out additions to their drinks or conveniently forgot they can’t have regular milk
LobsterOk1049 7 points 1y ago
Or when regulars who try to get over on the newbies cause they always put newbies on drive and she tries to see if she will get away with asking for two shots in her drink but on the side for cheap everyday
mOoDyPlatypus 20 points 1y ago
Oh, the customer understood, trust 🙄 she knew exactly what she was doing. Then people like her try to abuse the Starbucks customer satisfaction policy in getting what they actually want, but for a cheaper price. Situations like these are why good shift leads and SMs are IMPERATIVE to making a Starbucks a tolerable place to work. If you don't have good shift leads and managers (who don't bend to every illegitimate complaint/demand), these types of people will invade like a bunch of wood roaches.
AcanthisittaLazy2681 79 points 1y ago
the fact theres foam so y’all still shook it 😭 mad respect
SelocAvrap 47 points 1y ago
# Reminder that shaking hot drinks is a safety hazard, and you're allowed to (and should) say no
saltandseasmoke 22 points 1y ago
Honestly for no ice shaken espressos, I just shake them with ice then strain them, then fill with milk. It's safer, it's not too much hassle, it's the same way you'd prepare a cocktail or something without ice. The customer loses a lot of foam that way but like... if they cared about the quality of the drink they wouldn't be ordering it like this in the first place.
meklomaniac 74 points 1y ago
I blame the marketing for the shaken espresso drinks. They don’t show how it shouldn’t fill the whole cup even when made with ice.
Pylon-Cam 52 points 1y ago
The whole cup should be full. If you put in enough ice and shake it well, there will be lots of foam and only a little room at the top for the milk.
drinkliquidclocks 23 points 1y ago
You don’t fill the cup when you make it normally? What?
Coffee-Bae [OP] 24 points 1y ago
Yes. You're supposed to fill it so the milk, not the foam, reaches the top
yesixox -29 points 1y ago
After poring it into the cup it I just dump the foam and add the milk so it's not just foam atthe top
Ordinary-Theory-8289 6 points 1y ago
No don’t do that because the frothy foam from the shaking is the whole point of the drink
Detantevandaisy 3 points 1y ago
The whole point of shaken espresso is that it is not a latte. So if you dump the foam, there is too much milk
ckb999 1 points 1y ago
noooo the only time you should scoop is if there is too much foam to put in any milk imo
yesixox 1 points 1y ago
That's literally why I do it 💀
medusas-garden 58 points 1y ago
If shaken espressos didn’t charge for milk id agree with you but since it does then just save yourself the hassle and fill it to the top. When it was the double shot on ice we didn’t charge for milk and did not fill it up but since its rebranding Starbucks has decided to charge for milk even though there’s probably 4oz or less of milk. Confusing but that’s how Starbucks works. Fueled by greed ofc. These people paid 70 cents for oat milk on top of an already expensive drink so I understand their frustration. Is it annoying and defeats the purpose since it’s mainly ice? Yes but there are bigger things to worry about and you only stress yourself out and make your job harder worrying about it.
cats_with_tentacles 35 points 1y ago
This. So many baristas get burnt out because they are constantly bitter over the rules and customers breaking them... its easier, and better for my mental health, to just let it go
canidieyet_ 18 points 1y ago
this is my mentality now. i used to bust a vein over standards, but i’m just like “whatever, 2 extra ounces of 2% isn’t going to make us go bankrupt” lol

unless the customer is being rude for no reason, then they’re getting “corporate” version of me 😂
medusas-garden 2 points 1y ago
I complain a lot too but jfc you don’t have to be emotionally invested in every drink you make. Probably gonna leave this sub bc it’s just a cesspool of people complaining over tiny things and it just negatively affects your mindset.
Coffee-Bae [OP] 31 points 1y ago
I did say this in another comment but I cant find it.
We waited until they got here and changed it accordingly, but I have been burned to many times to just fill it.
They had ment to put light ice, but clicked the wrong button. I prefer to do it like this, simply because it makes for easier correction.

At this point I'm making things to standard

FfierceLaw 26 points 1y ago
According to the company, they want and they get a big ol’ cup of oat milk
Sp4c3Kn1f3 25 points 1y ago
if they ask for oatmilk to the top corporate has said to charge it as a latte. Anything over 4oz. They stated it about a month about in the weekly update discussion.
5AV1OR 17 points 1y ago
This is not correct anymore they have released multiple updates clarifying shaken espressos include milk charge and now must be filled to the top of ordered with light or no ice
Sbux_King 8 points 1y ago
Where can I find this on the Partner Hub?
Sp4c3Kn1f3 1 points 1y ago
3/4/2022 5:41AM was when the comment was posted. It’s from Fen herself in response to some people named Mike, Elyse, and Michael.

So it’s under the February 28th weekly update in the partner hub.
she_who_walks 5 points 1y ago
Where can I find this update?? I’d love to see it and be able to print it out for my store. I’m sick of fighting over this….
B0redBarista 8 points 1y ago
Oh it’s actually in a weekly update from March 2021 I believe. I had to go hunting for it to settle a debate at my store. I can’t remember the specific week!

PluralPaul 21 points 1y ago
Please tell me you didn't shake it, unless you shook it with the milk. Hot shots are not to be shaken or the shaker will explode
Coffee-Bae [OP] 22 points 1y ago
We didn't, I've gotten hit before.
PluralPaul 7 points 1y ago
Thank goodness
Coffee-Bae [OP] 8 points 1y ago
Lol thank you for the concern 😄
bedlamboy77 15 points 1y ago
Did not know that....good to know...
canidieyet_ 10 points 1y ago
learned this one the hard way. common sense told me “don’t do it!” but the intrusive “what if?” thoughts won that round
Accurate-Bumblebee14 18 points 1y ago
"The other store just fills it with oatmilk"
vertigo00o 11 points 1y ago
then they can go to the other store? like what 🙃
Sp4c3Kn1f3 16 points 1y ago
Why are so many people doing this? This is a problem for our store as well.
nbanderson32 16 points 1y ago
I’m pretty sure they expect us to fill it to the top with milk.
csaine 11 points 1y ago
It should actually be full. There was a weekly update not long after they put out the BSOSE that when they mobile order light ice or no ice you need to just fill it all the way. If they were in drive or cafe and ordered it you can ask if they just want room, otherwise just fill it.
tittywhipp 10 points 1y ago
....people do not understand coffee. Part of the novelty of a shaken espresso is the cold espresso foam of the shots shaken with the ice. And with milk.....like...omg just say you want sugar In cup.
bedlamboy77 7 points 1y ago
OMG I got this EXACT SAME order today! I asked my shift, "do I fill it up with Oatmilk?" He said, "nope, they didn't pay for more oatmilk." The DTR had to charge them more at the window when they wanted it filled up.
lilisredditaccount 5 points 1y ago
Actually these drinks do charge for milk
Sp4c3Kn1f3 1 points 1y ago
Yes but corporate has stated that we'd have to charge for a latte in this circumstance.
lilisredditaccount 1 points 1y ago
I understand but you wouldn’t be able to change that here because they mobile ordered
OreoBaconFries 2 points 1y ago
you technically could, if you just rang up the drink as a refund and then pressed “exit refund mode” and rung it up the other way then the customer pays just the difference
OreoBaconFries 1 points 1y ago
but anyway, my SM said that if the drink charges them for it when you ring it up normally (the left side being highlighted as default) then they pay for more than 4 oz of milk already so then we would fill it up. however i forgot to check the POS before i clocked out lol
Emarie2200 6 points 1y ago
At my store, we were told to fill the cup with milk when it’s ordered like this 🥲
komjaee 2 points 1y ago
please tell me y’all don’t shake it without ice 😬
Emarie2200 1 points 1y ago
I think depending on the person they might put a tiny bit of milk in it and shake it.
cynicosm 5 points 1y ago
can someone explain to me in technical terms why we dont fill it all of the way? i know why in my head, but i struggle putting it into words when customers ask
komjaee 8 points 1y ago
i just tell people: “it’s an ice based drink. ordering it without ice completely changes the components of the drink. the ice and espresso shaken together make up a majority of the drink with only a splash of milk. if you don’t want ice, a better way would be to order what you want is as a latte without ice. if you’re still insistent on ordering it like this, we will have to charge you for extra milk.”
Fantastic1357 3 points 1y ago
Shaken espressos already get charged for milk though so how would you charge for extra milk?

And they said in a weekly update that if they ask for light ice to fill it up all the way with milk
komjaee 2 points 1y ago
my store allows us to do it with light ice; without ice is a different story. light ice can still be shaken unlike without which is why we can. that’s my store’s policy, however, each store is ran differently you know?

edit: i remember seeing that in a weekly update too but i don’t remember how long ago it was
cynicosm 2 points 1y ago
do u know when this weekly update was? bc ppl at my store have been making “no ice” shaken espressos like OP has for weeks, if not months now .

edit: not that i don’t believe u!!! just curious if we all missed the memo lol
Fantastic1357 1 points 1y ago
Honestly I don’t remember exactly when it was but I want to say late last summer?

We don’t get a lot of no ice mobile orders or even people asking for them in house but when they do we let them know the whole spiel that it’s gonna be very milky and it’s a safety hazard to shake it without ice so we’ll shake it with ice and strain it but that they’re probably looking for a latte blah blah blah

But we don’t really argue with them about it if they want us to shake it with ice then strain it and give them a ton of milk, and honestly it’s a lot less headache for us that way so we just do it

Now when people order espresso shots and want milk filled all the way then that’s a different story and I would charge them accordingly but they’re already paying like 6 dollars for a shaken espresso with modifications so I’m like whatever it’s not coming out of my paycheck yanno
cynicosm 1 points 1y ago
thank you for such an detailed response!
ThatBichAlex 4 points 1y ago
When someone ask for no ice in the shaken espresso, I put extra ice to shake the espresso and the drain the ice. That way it still fills the cup with foamy espresso. It works pretty well 🤷🏼‍♀️
HoneyMangoSmiley 3 points 1y ago
Nate or Jess just don’t know….. why not spend two seconds to explain it to them? Make it easier to be a partner by actually doing the part of our job where we help customers understand coffee.

When we are haughty to customers for not knowing how our drinks work- that’s such bad manners and doesn’t represent the ones who want to help people find their favorites and make it easy on us because they know how to order properly.

I didn’t know how to order at Starbucks before I worked here- i used to get anxiety that i was going to say the wrong fancy word and the barista would laugh at me.

I literally don’t understand how y’all expect the customers to know how to do our jobs when it takes three to six months dedication to craft to be a solid barista….. they’ve got their whole life doing stuff that isn’t making coffee. Like cut em some slack for Pete’s sake!

We had to be taught the recipe……. Can you consider how uplifting it would feel to help them understand what they’re ordering when it’s a new style of beverage they’re curious about?

Plus they paid for the Oatmilk so they’ve already spent cash towards having a drink with more than four ounces of nondairy milk. I would personally do the following….Kindly: Explain the beverage to them and then there’s an 86% chance they’ll say in their own casual way: ok thank you for being a helpful barista: can you fill it up with milk? I didn’t understand and I appreciate you sharing knowledge with me.

Maybe suggest that next time they get an iced latte with no ice and extra shots???????

OP is wondering what their thought process was and I’m guessing after FOURTEEN YEARS of being a barista - it was something like “this new espresso drink in my front page in my Starbucks app looks so good, but I wanna drink it tomorrow morning so I’ll get it with no ice. I like oatmilk so I’ll choose that as my milk and he likes chai so let’s put some of that in”
Coffee-Bae [OP] 1 points 1y ago
I don't disagree with you at all, I posted this without any explanation because I didnt expect it to be a big deal, it was funny to see and I wanted to share it.

When we got this drink, we made it like this so that it could be easily modified to their tastes. We put a little bit of oatmilk in it to keep the shots from going stale and then waited so we could get clarification on what needed to happen

When Nate got there, after the initial shock (when he saw it he said "that's wrong"), we walked him through what a Shaken Espresso was and in the process, found out what he wanted. In reality he wanted it with light ice instead of no ice, which we then made - easy fix. If we had made assumptions about what he wanted we would then had to remake/pull those shots again once we talked to him.
As someone who's been a partner for 14 years I'm sure you understand how it can be easier to fix a drink than remake it entirely. I haven't been been with the company near that long, but it has been several years and I know the ropes. Anyone who's been with the company for more than a year knows how often everything changes and how difficult it is to be 100% up on everything. With so many updates that happen so frequently, it's foolish to think that no one will get confused at times. Making the assumption that we fully understand and are constantly completely up to date on standards is something that we all fall victim too and remaining teachable helps break that cycle of false assumptions.
I do my best to make the drinks to standard and keep the customer experience as positive as possible. I think we did due diligence when it comes to teaching about coffee and making Nate happy with his drinks.

Really quick, I want to address the general tone of your post. As I said at the beginning of this comment; this original picture/post was meant to show a funny drink order situation and provide a chance to share some comradery over that. So I was a bit taken aback by the tone in which I read your comment. Perhaps it wasn't your intention but the comment read as condescending, a little rude, and very much like you were jumping to conclusions about me and my store based on a very vague post. Because of this I had to take a moment and rewrote my response a few times. So if this reply seems defensive or irritated that would be residual emotion left over from the first few drafts lmao
Again, I don't disagree with the facts you stated just got a little heated at the way you said them.
HoneyMangoSmiley 0 points 1y ago
I hear you and I appreciate that you spent time penning this thoughtful response. I apologize that my tone came across rude and condescending. I actually rewrote my response a few times to make it less sassy. I had just gotten off a long day at my high volume DT store and I see posts like this as making my job and all other barista’s jobs more challenging because it perpetuates a harmful stereotype that baristas aren’t patient with customers who don’t have how to order. The format of your post is very different from this message you sent me. I would encourage you to reflect on how you truly feel vs how you expressed yourself and why’s there’s a disconnect. It seems like you mean to do the very best in all you do and hold yourself accountable for the results. What if you had posted this with a title like “They got here and asked “why is it empty???” I HELPED THEM UNDERSTAND- IT WENT GREAT!!!”

It’s a huge deal for me to see so much customer bashing on this sub. I’m sorry that I made assumptions based on your lack of context and all caps in the original post. I see so many posts on here like “customers are idiots who don’t know how to order- why do they order stuff they don’t know about.” And without this further context you provided- your “joke” came off like you were furthering this message.

“Love your drink or let us know- we’ll always make it right.”

Sounds like you have done Nate “due diligence” and I appreciate that you took time to make the moment right for him. Can you see how your post without context comes across like you didn’t actually know what his thought process was? Can you see how posting his drink online attached to his name can serve to further the animosity towards customers I see in other comments?
Kittywizarrr 2 points 1y ago
I think it’s Nate’s fault. Jess did nothing wrong
paigemclachlan 2 points 1y ago
Everyone’s in arms about the actual drink but I’m just here thinking about “Nate or Jess” PICK ONE
Imaginarybluntallday 2 points 1y ago
STARBUCKS RELEASED IN A WEEKLY UPDATE (about a year ago) THAT WHEN PEOPLE ASK FOR NO ICE OR LIGHT ICE IN SHAKEN ESPRESSOS THAT WE SHOULD FILL IT WITH EXTRA MILK…. Not saying I agree with this because it’s a dumb way for people to take advantage and not actually enjoy a SHAKEN ESPRESSO, but it is what it is 💀🤡
Regular-Reveal8133 2 points 1y ago
when i get this i straight up don’t make it until they get there and then tell them if i shake it without ice it explodes and make them figure it out lmfao

kikuuq 2 points 1y ago
Actually legit had a customer ask if they could do the brown sugar with no ice and had to explain to them that the drink is almost entirely ice. I got a cup to show him how much it will fill without the ice and he changed his mind pretty quickly. How funny tho that this post showed up on my feed when this almost happened to me not even 40 mins ago 🤭
maderpater 2 points 1y ago
I don’t get why they don’t just order a latte then😅
Coffee-Bae [OP] 2 points 1y ago
Lattes are almost a dollar more expensive
Astrovite 1 points 1y ago
It's like people who order a tall refresher with no ice, then a venti cup of ice, and I'm guessing pour the tall into the cup of ice.
yudans 1 points 1y ago
Just fill the rest of the way with oatmilk?
laurenredz 1 points 1y ago
That second drink gives me anxiety lol
cory_putnam 1 points 1y ago
New policy makes us fill drinks like this to the top now.
-beam-me-up- 1 points 1y ago
Dude we have biodegradable cups now so thos would just straight up melt through the cup like...
Vicasux 1 points 1y ago
Why didn’t you fill the cup with oat milk? This is a genuine question... They don’t know the policy I don’t blame them for thinking it was going to come full. :/
jdbrougham 1 points 1y ago

gilbasrevenge 17 points 1y ago
You’re being downvoted but same because these customers clearly want a drink filled to the brim without paying for ice and you know what? I’m too busy and don’t get paid enough to have this argument over and over
gilbasrevenge 12 points 1y ago
Not to mention, we ultimately have to “make the moment right” for them so they’re *going* to get what they want either way
geogrokat 1 points 1y ago
Exactly! Idk why Im getting downvoted so bad
AIchemiIIa 9 points 1y ago
Right like we're going to have to do it anyways when they get there and get all snippy with the "ummm why isn't this full 🙄"

But I always only fill the no ice ones to the top black line and fix it if they ask bc it rlly does feel wrong to give them so much milk

For inventory reasons this is wrong, if you are adding more milk you have to mark it out. They paid for the amount of milk that goes into a Shaken esp. Which is not the same that goes into a latte.
logiwave 11 points 1y ago
This is incorrect, if they ask for extra milk in a shaken espresso they need to be charged.
Mcbennski 3 points 1y ago
Adding as much milk as YOU want vs what THEY want is the problem here. OP wouldn't have known if they wanted it filled to the top or with room until they arrived. It could have easily been an issue either way. Easier to leave it empty and fill when they arrive.
Necessary_Low939 -5 points 1y ago
For those saying this get milk to the top line… no this drink only gets light milk. It was like this when I made it in 2014. The new drinks are different, like the brown sugar shaken espresso do get more milk, but those are the new drinks. This old ass drink doesnt.
cpv_91 1 points 1y ago
All the shaken espresso drinks when made correctly get 1/4 of milk per standard.

Look at the recipe cards available on the partner hub or ipads.
Pristine_Business -15 points 1y ago
i mean i kind of get what they’re saying. even without ice the milk should be to the top black line.
Coffee-Bae [OP] 10 points 1y ago
Good to know people are still taught these drinks wrong
spook-1 7 points 1y ago
It was in the weekly update a long time ago, you’re supposed to fill the cup🫠
Coffee-Bae [OP] -6 points 1y ago
You're supposed to fill it so the foam isn't to the top but the milk is. That does not apply to Shaken Espresso's with no ice. So kindly. No 💙
spook-1 16 points 1y ago
I can find the week it was posted in the update for ya :) It specifically says for mobile, you fill it to the top. for cafe, you ask the customer how they want it.
