When I started with Starbucks, I had completely open availability. All times, all days.

I'm now starting a certification program for a medical field job. I'm having to choose between going a few days a week for a few hours each day, or going one day a week for 8 hours that day. I THOUGHT choosing one day a week would be the smarter choice. I'd have completely open availability outside of it, no worries.

I approached my asm today and asked if I was good to change my availability (I probably should have just done it). She congratulated me but asked that I only ask for a partial amount of the day off. She wants me to still be able and ready to work, after 8 hours of school.

I can understand their apprehension a little I guess, given its on Saturday. But I doubt I'll have the brain power after 8 hours of instruction to actually do good work.

I'm pretty pissed. I figured that one day a week would be much easier, but they don't even want to guarantee the full day off for me.

That's all, really.

Just say you’re not available on Saturdays. I’m sure they’ll Be fine on the Saturday and can just schedule someone else

I vote this. It’s one day a week and they have open availability for you the entire rest of the week. It’s a give a little to get a little scenario and they are getting much more out of this deal.

You can change your availability to whatever you want. If management retaliates, call the ethics and compliance hotline.

You can submit an Availability Request, but that can be approved or denied. It isn’t a guarantee and it doesn’t fall under Ethics and Compliance.

I feel like there is a finer line than this. Denying availability isn't an issue, but approving it and suddenly dropping hours down to 1 shift a week could be considered retaliation. For instance.

I understand what you’re saying, especially if the SM didn’t have a conversation about that when they approved the change. I almost always approve an availability change, but I also explain to them that limiting their hours could also limit the amount of time I can schedule them. Understanding how a schedule is made with 10+ people with differing availabilities is important if someone doesn’t have knowledge of that process.

Also no. A chance in availability can lead to a change in hours. Because the barista started the change it wouldn’t be retaliation. Not by the starbucks definition.
