A question for those who do tips (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by jelocubes
Do any of you guys NOT round to the nearest dollar when distributing tips?

I'm trying to make a basic android app that does all the calculations for you, and I was wondering if I should add a "Round to the nearest Cent" option.

I’ve never had a store that gave coins as tips, only bills. If that’s what ur asking. When I was doing tips I was taught any extra change went back in the tip jar, after converting into bills of course

I use it to calculate tips quickly and fairly. Someone else on a Starbucks sub shared it a few years ago.

Oh shit thanks, haha. This would’ve been helpful when I was still a partner

We only round to dollars, too much of a hassle to distribute and count out coins, plus no one really wants the .32 cents they would rather have excess change go back in tips for next week and do whole dollar amounts only

I was taught to just calculate and pretend nothing past .xx exists. So rounding down to the nearest cent every time to be safe.

You should be rounding as little as possible. Save your per hour tip rate as a variable with as many significant figures as possible. Only round to the nearest cent when it comes time to actually put the tips in the bags.

Oh sorry, I should've been more specific. I'm asking if any stores distribute coins with their tips, not about rounding the calculations.

When tips are done we don’t give out coins. We round up and down. 19.28=19, 19.50=20.

Yea how I've always done it at licensed and now even at corporate is anything .49 and under you round down and anything .50 and over you round up. Granted there might be a differential at the end where your short a dollar or two or over a dollar or two and in that case we take out of the days tips if we're short and if we're over they go into the days tips.
If that didnt make sense I apologize I'm horrible at explaining things which is why I chose not to be a trainer
