managers never on the floor(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by TheWallTheVeil
Hey everyone, I'm just curious about the actual job of a shift manager. I've been a partner for 6 years now and I temporarily left for about 8 months. After covid lockdown and especially now I find that managers are literally never on the floor or barely here for the most part. I'm not sure if what their job entails has changed over covid but from the moment I started, mangers were required to always on the floor in the morning, during peak and a little bit after before going to the back and doing their other manager duties. I didn't return as a shift this time around but I find that most of the managers duties seem to fall on the supervisors. And none of the supervisors here are older than 21 and just don't seem to have a great grasp on their duties either. I'm not sure if it's something to bother bringing up to the DM but it's really frustrating as a former supervisor to be trying to help these poor, young supervisors when they lose control and the shift is super disorganized.

That is NOT normal. As a SSV if I’m not on the floor I’m placing an order, doing inventory, putting away an order, doing a food pull, organizing BOH, etc…But, y’all actually have SSV’s that aren’t on the floor during peak???😳 I’m always consistently running around (especially during peak) making sure we are caught up with everything, that partners get all their breaks, etc that I usually skip my own breaks. I’m sorry that your SSV’s aren’t doing their job at all. That sounds awful!!! You’re supposed to be planted in the FOH during peak, not in the back……

I'm not talking about the shift supervisors being off the floor or at home 99% of the time, my post is about managers never being present or on the floor.

OH, apparently I can’t read, I opened today so my brain is only half-working😆 Well, to answer your actual question after rereading…Usually my manager will help if there’s a shift that wasn’t covered during peak specifically, but otherwise they are not directly on the floor. Although, our store is an older one but very busy so there’s always a looooot of manager stuff they’re doing, especially with the schedule and all. Sometimes I don’t see them at all for a few days, but then again I have a wonky schedule since I have free availability. My SM isn’t lazy at all though, just really, really, REALLY busy and they always help if we need it and they happen to be there…Sometimes they sit in the cafe and do their manager work and sort of keep an eye on the flow of stuff.
But yeah, a lot of responsibility falls on us. I’m surprised that SMs used to be on the floor every day, that’s crazy! I see mine a few times a week lol…tbh it sounds quite nice having the store manager around like that for peak specifically.

Sbux managers fucking off in the office all day who would have thought

Exactly. My managers only job is basically to suck up to the district managers and regional managers that come into our store because we're a training store, otherwise she's getting paid to do nothing. Meanwhile as a shift supervisor I'm only getting 25 hours a week which is not enough to cover even the basics.

My store is lucky if we even see our store manager lol. She's always an hour late for her shifts, claiming she's cutting her own hours so she doesn't have to cut anyone else's. When she is in the store, she's on the computer the whole time, not just during her administrative day either. I've been at my store for four months and I work 4-5 days a week almost always during peak and I've worked maybe 3 shifts with her actually being on the floor lol. Pretty sure Sbux managers get paid to do nothing since shifts pretty much run the store and anything we don't place an order for is on auto order. Schedules every week are copy pasted so not really sure what our manager does all day??? Seems like this is the standard for most stores.

I feel like they could cut the cost of the entire manager salary at this point and start giving full timers 40 hours a week instead and still end up saving money

My manager works occasionally but most of the time they sit in the back playing games on their phone

Ours does the same thing, if she even shows up for her shift but is never even in uniform. We just went to our Dm about it 💅 plus a lot of other things

Before my old store closed we all collectively wrote letters for the district manager about our manager and she got fired. Unfortunately she had already left the damage she did and the store couldn't stay open because of it. A manager from another store tried but it was too late

Our SM loves to be on the floor with us, jamming out to good music and joking around. We all work so great as a team and it’s because our SM treats us like equals as much as possible.

Store Manager? Mine works on the floor. Is usually in the store for 40 hours a week (occasional out of the store for meetings). Works at least one weekend day, works most peaks, unless it's the day they close. Most the SMs in my district work the floor. My old store's SM didn't work on the floor as much, but was doing out district manager's job.
