everytime i make a hot chai latte to standard i get a rush (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by quickthinxallthots
like yes thats what the recipe calls for but i feel like im being a mischievous little creacher serving customers a watered down chai

a lot of people in my district don't make this drink to standard and im one of the few baristas that does. we even have store managers who say to nix the water in the recipe. lol idk but it brings some joy to my day making it correctly and feeling evil over it.

I'm sorry I may be the only one to say this but... the people who don't make it by standard are the evil ones. Those partners are the ones who mess it up for the rest of us and why we continuously get further training on how to follow standard or how to ring things up appropriately for the standard. If everybody made drinks how they were supposed to be I wouldn't have to hear people tell me all day how at this one store or that one barista or blah blah blah blah. Low key is kind of infuriating sometimes. So..... THANK YOU FOR DOING IT THE RIGHT WAY 🥲
quickthinxallthots [OP] 10 points 1y ago
no i agree but i also think it tastes better without the water. i make it the correct way and when i am taking an order i ask if a customer wants the water or not. but when im on bar i feel like im purposely sabotaging someone's drink (even if thats what the recipe calls for) and it makes me feel evil in like, a good way. its a small thing but its the small things that get you thought the day lol

Honestly Starbucks is so cult-like and I think it's inevitable that the shifts give you corrections you just have to learn to nod or say, "I am making this drink correctly, to-standard, it is not me you should be correcting". At one point in time I met this shift who would do that, but she also focused on who precisely was doing something out of the norm and would have barista trainers shadow the barista who was doing anything non-standard.

At first I thought it was annoying as all hell but then I realized she was just suffering from the same problem that you are. I think you guys deserve way better and there is freedom and happiness that working at a small coffee company will bring you. You already have coffee knowledge so you're set, but working for a small business that focuses more on quality than pushing out 20-30 drinks in 10 or so minutes is also very different.

For example, in order not to burn milk, you're only realy supposed to keep the steamer on until the drink reaches 120 degrees, and more than half of the time the baristas at Starbucks don't aerate the milk and put the pitcher down on the machine too soon so the milk is flat and watery.

I quit working at Starbucks in part because I felt guilty for handing out anything there, I knew the coffee beans were already burnt to a crisp, we were always rushed to hand out anything and nobody had the time to make a proper latte, infact most people weren't even ordering coffee to begin with.

I see where you are coming from though, I suffered from the same thing and I got sick of being berated by shifts before peak to make things right even though everybody else did shortcuts daily and I was just trying to keep to standard. Honestly though, the Starbucks standard way of making drinks cannot be quality and I've tried just about every drink on the menu and it is just not as good without the proper tweaks and foaming, LESS WATER..don't get me going about the americanos it is such a waste of good espresso with all that water in there 😵😵‍💫.
Spinelise 3 points 1y ago
This!! You're so right about all of it. I try my best to still make the drinks as best I can, as in aerating, stirring syrups into the espresso so it's not all clumpy at the bottom, foaming milk properly and like if it's not the way it needs to be I'm not afraid of redoing it and letting the customer know- 9/10 times they always appreciate it. But it's become more and more difficult to do this and make truly good drinks when we're constantly being rushed. I love being a barista, but Starbucks is wringing me out. I'm exhausted, even with less hours than ever, and burnt out. Looking for a local coffee shop now and hoping I can get hired at one :/ but it's sad that many in my area actually don't pay anywhere near this $15 wage increase.
Puzzleheaded_Kale613 3 points 1y ago
Yes, it took me forever to save up enough to leave Starbucks! The benefits are what kept me there and now that I can *kind of* afford my own health insurance I was able to rip myself away and quit finally. Small business are tough too if their own way, less pay included- but also less employees and more rights to the tips so you don't have to share with 10+ coworkers.

I hope you do find a place because it is amazing the actual difference you can make in somebody's day with a genuine, good cup of coffee or a speciality drink. You get to make real human connection too, not the forced "connection" that Starbucks makes you have with the slews of people coming in and out of the drive-thru, café or both.

The only advice I can give to you is to keep doing what you're doing because you're doing the most and your best keep fighting warrior barista! Don't let those sticky customers get to you, at the end of the day just follow the Starbucks standard way of making their drink and they are sure to have a 💩 day!
herpaslurp 2 points 1y ago
this is the hill i die on. people can often go to a boutique shop and get something of, potentially, better quality, but they come to us, presumably, for the consistency, familiarity, and ease! that's the whole point of standardization!
dazedinreverse 48 points 1y ago
Im always so worried about the customer seeing me do that even though they get it daily usually and probably know what it gets
ehart0102 42 points 1y ago
Any tea latte should be ½ tea and ½ milk. In the chai, we’re just making the tea portion from concentrate and water instead of brewing with a tea bag.
quickthinxallthots [OP] 2 points 1y ago
ye i know !!! i'm just being a little shitter. i think it tastes better without the water and so do a lot of customers... so when i add the water it feels like im sabotaging a drink on purpose. its just funny in my head, but it gets me through the day lol
Mx0rion 41 points 1y ago
i've actually once had a customer sad that her chai was so "thick and creamy" because somebody was being nice and gave her all milk instead of water as well 😭 i hadn't realized some people would prefer it with water until that day but they exist! so genuinely keep doing what you're doing lol there are people that appreciate you for it
kirari_moroboshi 19 points 1y ago
lmao i remember when i was being trained i asked why we water it down and my shift told me the water "activates" the chai....🥴
7beforeminutes5 13 points 1y ago
I got told that my first time thru training in 2017 and the next drink she had me make was an iced chai…. I just stared at her dumbfounded a minute and asked so how do I activate this one?
fidakitkat 11 points 1y ago
The ice is the water in iced chai
quickthinxallthots [OP] 1 points 1y ago
i'm gonna be frank it doesn't really make sense because ice is a solid and is also added last so it can't activate. i really think the reasoning is just because it's not really a syrup but rather a tea concentrate, kind of the same logic that goes into adding water into a black iced tea.
ice does melt and i do think this plays into the build of an iced drink but it doesn't melt enough to constitute as a substitute for 50% water you feel me?
but my feelings aside, i still make it to standard
BlackberryOpposite31 8 points 1y ago
It literally says that on the box though.
kirari_moroboshi 1 points 1y ago
ah, see i'm in the uk and ours comes ready to serve in a carton that says nothing about it? but that's interesting to know!
thatswackrhi 15 points 1y ago
I think that making all drinks standard is the safest thing to do. Because lets say if you make a chai and you think itd be a “nice” thing to do to make it with more milk than what it calls for, and turns out they dont like milk more than what comes in it. You kinda inadvertently ruin their drink. Same goes with anything in starbucks. I like to think if they want it a certain way theyll ask about it at some point or order it how they want it. So, no “nice” moves that change the composition of the drink for me :)

Best example is I thought i was being nice by foam blending a iced matcha to better incorporate the powder. Turns out the person LIKED the matcha chunks. So weird, but in the end it was my mistake for assuming
quickthinxallthots [OP] 3 points 1y ago
completely understand! i try not to assume drive through drinks but if people come inside i might ask if they want to try something different/suggest something bc it'd be easier to remake it if they don't like it lol
thatswackrhi 2 points 1y ago
i love poking people and seeing if theyd be willing to try new things. recently the college where i live had graduation, so we actually ran out of all our refreshers! Had to tell the people we were out before their order started. I did end up convincing to get quite a number of people to try the blended strawberry lemonade (i also suggested raspberry in it bc thats how i like it) and it was so fun and a lot of people were super happy and surprised !
Enough_Raise_7167 2 points 1y ago
I never put water in chais and I use the foam blender to make iced matchas... I thought I was being nice. You've given me a new perspective. Thank you.
WesternEvery1779 6 points 1y ago
It's one thing to make something incorrectly on accident and another to serve someone more calories, carbs, sugars without telling them on purpose. Obvi a lot of our customers are coming in to be super indulgent but some are not.
feisty314 2 points 1y ago
This. My husband is diabetic, and if the carb content of something he is served is significantly different than what he expects, it can mess up his blood sugar the rest of the day.
MonsteraNSFW 5 points 1y ago
ME TOO lmao. I usually don't bother but if you're rude...you get the standard and you can't even complain. C:
Pontiff_Pineapple 14 points 1y ago
What if I’m nice and want it made to standard?
quickthinxallthots [OP] 1 points 1y ago
i make it to standard regardless but i try to stay in the habit of asking customers if they want the water or not. if a customer is rude i don't ask lol
herpaslurp 4 points 1y ago
some people like the chai to have more "bite" without being sweeter and that's what adding water does. it comes down customer preference at the end of the day. do they want a "creamy" chai or a "bitey" chai 🤷‍♂️
quickthinxallthots [OP] 1 points 1y ago
i see! we've been having a lot of customers complain that the chai isn't as spicy as it used to be. i hope my watered down chais are fixing that!!!
Acrobatic_Poetry3217 3 points 1y ago
During rush I can feel their eyes on me, as I water down their chai. A bunch of people order it without water tho, so thats fine. But if I like a customer, I try to do something little 'extra' for them like a full chai or a nice drizzle patern
dankmobile 2 points 1y ago
this is exactly how i feel LMAO “mischievous little creacher” really sums it up
ittybittybakerkitty 2 points 1y ago
I also feel evil with standard chai but Americano too 🤣
katevendetta 2 points 1y ago
Ha I worked at a grocery store Starbucks and they just decided at some point not to make it correctly and I always did and it irked me so bad when customers would bark no water! While I was putting the water in it
board-certified 2 points 1y ago
the way i cheat to make this drink is i do half cold filtered water/half milk in the steaming pitcher then i steam it on extra hot (because our hot water spout is like 180). It honestly makes the perfect chai latte. and it’s so much quicker than walking over to the hot water spout.
quickthinxallthots [OP] 1 points 1y ago
that sounds interesting but theres also this nice feeling when i pour the milk onto the watered down concentrate and watching the foam sit on the water for a moment before it sinks....... i would miss that
Dzfranken 1 points 1y ago
Makes it less spicy
Broad-Flounder-4971 1 points 1y ago
I always hated sbux chai and now that I know the recipe I’m like ah. It’s the water. I know it’s like a concentrate, but like…why water when milk, you feel me? But I have had chai made by my desi friends so I’m a little bit of a chai snob. More spice 😤 without more sugar also!

absolutefoo 1 points 1y ago
wait so what wouldn’t be classified as standard 🧍🏽‍♀️ like how could u mess it up 😂😂
Nearby-Philosophy-25 21 points 1y ago
They’re saying people in their district exclude the water so it’s just chai concentrate and steamed milk. The correct way is to fill it up halfway with water and chai concentrate and the rest with steamed milk
bigtittym1lf 0 points 1y ago
chai… gets water?
quickthinxallthots [OP] 1 points 1y ago
they are 50% water 50% milk! water activates the chai so water = spicier chai, 100% milk = creamier chai. this is what i learned from the comments lol
bigtittym1lf 2 points 1y ago
WHY DIDNT I LEARN THIS WTF
lanastan4everlolz 0 points 1y ago
i was told during training that the chai doesn’t get water anymore so i’ve never made it with water… nobody’s ever complained so idk
quickthinxallthots [OP] 2 points 1y ago
they are 50% water 50% milk! your trainer was wrong i'm sorry!
