Unlawful termination?? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by chronicwh0re
So my fiancé works at a store here in NC and just got terminated because other partners were complaining of him smelling like weed? The manager who fired him stated that because it’s illegal here in North Carolina and against policy that he had to be let go.

Most upstanding companies would do a drug screen. They can fire without cause, just be sure his termination papers don't say drug use, because 1) they have no proof and 2) it might interfere with unemployment (idk). Good luck.

This is kinda weird coming from a Seattle barista cuz like I've literally seen coworkers smoke weed in the parking lot. Just a odd observation on culture

It’s really dumb in my opinion especially since it’s legal to smoke/sell CBD bud, delta-8/10 which also has a smell and still has a smaller amount of THC. But we’re not allowed to wear perfumes, lotions, or smell of cigs yet nobody is getting fired for that. It’s redic

Starbucks does have a no drug policy, but few people actually follow that, but showing up to work high is a much different story, even though again, it happens a lot. So yeah this sounds suspicious. I think the company is finding reasons to fire certain people... which is to say they're finding violations that they were previously letting slide (ie. in my case I was frequently tardy, but kept my job for as long as I did because in all other areas I was a great employee.)

Idk I'm accepting the termination because this job was really messing with my mental health, but I definitely think there's some shady stuff going on with scheduling, hiring, targetting certain employees, terminating for questionable reasons, etc.

I figured they had a no drug policy but he doesn’t smoke to get “high” per-say I know that’s a very gray area for because it is illegal in Nc still, but delta-8/10 and CBD are not illegal and still has a strong smell as well. I know a lot of partners at my own store that come in smelling like tobacco which is also against policy. There was also a barista targeting him specifically, stated he called her a b** Under his breath, and just constantly complaining about him in general. It felt very targeted and unfair for him to be let go this way but ig things happen for a reason.

ok yeah definitely sounds like it, especially when delta 8 and cbd is legal. this was definitely fraudulent.

be careful when applying for unemployment as well, they tried to tell my local office I was still employed with them so I'd be prevented from getting benefits. Hold onto your copy of the notice of termination document and scan it, so you have proof if the company tries to give false info.
