My manager asked me, "Why is it important to always follow beverage recipes exactly"? I got to answer it, but he was not satisfied. He said I should look at the bigger picture. I don't get him, I just answered straight forward, can you give me an advice? (self.starbucksbaristas)

What exactly did you say?
You follow beverage recipes so the drink is consistent no matter where you go to get your drink. Theoretically a mocha will taste the same regardless if you are in London, Sydney, Seattle, or Hong Kong.

I said, "following beverage recipe is important because it is the standard and will serve as a guide when crafting beverages". But it seems that he's looking for a different answer.

You want the customer to have the same drink experience no matter which store they go to. I've had this conversation with so many new people who want "improve" drinks and make them the way they feel is best.

Also, every time you ring up a beverage in the POS, the appropriate components are costed out. For example, ringing in a grande mocha means the system accounts for the correct size and cost of the cup, lid, milk, mocha, shots, milk and whip. If partners are deviating from the recipe, the system is unable to keep track of costs accurately. Add this up millions of times all over the world and you’ve got a problem.

I have a manager who asked me the same thing yesterday. Their desired answer was "consistency".

But they're also the same person who walked up and put a spray bottle on the counter, and then 2 minutes later grilled ME about leaving that spray bottle on the counter.

So, not very consistent.

Thank you for responding partners! Hopefully I'll pass my certification and got my name badge.

i always think about consistency and health issues. if someone has diabetes and they order a drink they should know how much insulin they need because the drinks are standardized. or if they have a heart issue they know how much caffeine they’re getting, but that just helps me stay on it and not guess on bar. i think they’re looking for consistency
