Can I get fired for being sick? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Apprehensive_Rub_927
Hey y’all so this is my first job and I don’t really know how this stuff works. My immune system is really bad and I get sick really easily. In the past month, I’ve had strep throat and now I have bronchitis which is not uncommon for me because I have lung issues but I’ve had to call out of work a few times and Ive only been working about 3 months now. Ive never had any other issues at work and I always show up and do my job besides this, but when I called out ahead of time for tomorrows shift because of the bronchitis, my manager sounded really annoyed (which I get, she has a right to be). It just got me thinking, could something like this be grounds for termination?

It’s my understanding that if you are absent three consecutive scheduled shifts, they can require a doctor’s note. Assuming you have been there long enough to get the insurance (took about 4 months for me) then you have a legitimate reason (according to corporate).

If you have doctors notes for the days you’ve missed you can’t be fired, but depending on the length of time you need to be out of work to recover, they may require you to apply for a medical leave of absence.

If you live in Wa it might be an issue since it is an at will state.

To be honest, all but like 1-2 states are at will.
