Howard (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by goon1975
anyone else think that Howard video we all had to watch was complete BS lollll I could go on about the flaws I saw but it’s kind of a joke at this point. I’ll be quitting soon anyway so I’m not too worried about the NFTs, portable CF pitchers, union busting more corporate bs, etc
Zealousideal-Star448 215 points 1y ago
I agree the video is a parody of itself, South Park doesn’t even have to add anything to make it stupid. The cold foam blenders are a disaster waiting to happen, there isn’t any room on espresso bar for sweet cream let alone the blending thing, plus that has to be charged? We are gonna break them so fast! The nft thing is a joke and ridiculous. He made claims that the apron blend of coffee is going back to the baristas, but didn’t really expand on how it’s coming back to us. He mostly talked about corporate stuff that doesn’t really apply to most partners, as so many of us are new to the company we aren’t able to get bean stock so we don’t care about what shareholders are upset about. And then he went on talking forever about how great Starbucks was in the past and how it was the first in corporate America to do xyz. But a lot of this stuff is now standard in fast food, McDonald’s in my area is giving a starting rate of 18-20 bucks yet I’m here making 15 and change. Free collage is available at Taco Bell, and as for health insurance, you can get that at most retail stores now. The only unique benefit Starbucks has is free Spotify. Howard’s all saying “they have counted us out” out of what? I wanna know when the last time anyone in the corporate office was on bar? When did they last walk into a random Starbucks where baristas have no clue who the fuck Howard is, and actually talk to them about their job? when did they last try to talk to customers through a drive thru head set? Probably not in forever! Yet yea let’s spend our resources on a portable blender! That makes sense!
MonstrousGiggling 37 points 1y ago
I want to stand up and applaud after reading this.
No-Wonder8933 20 points 1y ago
The Spotify isn’t even free they deduct it from your paycheck monthly whether or not you use it. Bastards
knowitallbarista 28 points 1y ago
it's not deducted from your paycheck. It's "added" to your paycheck for taxes on their side, but they don't tell you how it works so it totally looks like that.
0x52and1x52 2 points 1y ago
I mean they do, people just don’t pay attention.
csaine 4 points 1y ago
I don't use Spotify, can I have my money back? 🤣😂
RavenMcG 74 points 1y ago
The cold foam thing just looks like a big fleshlight.
sheep_heavenly 68 points 1y ago
He also just blatantly ignores history for convenience. Healthcare wasn't something he magnanimously gave, it was a key point of contention between him as a new owner and the roasting plant as people who just signed a new contract with their union. It was his carrot to soften the blow when he dismantled the union back then. The same way they suddenly announce new/returning benefits now.
impasse602 39 points 1y ago
You guys had to watch a video?
UserNoUsername 12 points 1y ago
yep, in the “summer training” one of the tasks is an hour long video
cookiemonstah87 2 points 1y ago
Woah, I didn't have that! Wonder if that means I have more summer training to do now...

my favorite quote from the video was “it’s not about the wages.” Howard, honey, it really IS about the wages..
DianaSilverthorn 7 points 1y ago
I read part of dudes book onward, and it just reeked of out of touch billionaire BS like this
neighborrcat 3 points 1y ago
he came from a poor family though :’C :/ /s
Js_On_My_Yeet 33 points 1y ago
I think everyone thinks it's BS. Like we don't need portable cf pitchers or NFTs. We need better pay lol
Forsaken_Town9047 27 points 1y ago
I dont see the cold foam blender practical and we supposed to hold it in one hand while holding the beverage cup in our other hand all while somehow making the cold foam?
violentfemme17 24 points 1y ago
My other favorite part was that we were scheduled 45 minutes to both watch the hour long video and do summer training.
poopylilbutt 2 points 1y ago
That's your manager.
KiwiBeginning4 17 points 1y ago
i refused to watch it
reyviivall 14 points 1y ago
I'm still shocked that Howard straight up misgendered Fen after they introduced him like at least pretend to care about pronouns for the video
nezaket 1 points 1y ago
who?
reyviivall 1 points 1y ago
the non binary shift lead who they had speak briefly before introducing Howard.
nezaket 1 points 1y ago
oh i don't even remember that. you can tell i paid a lot of attention to the video^lol
BatWeary 13 points 1y ago
lol we all turned it on and then just sat and payed games on our phones while talking shit 😂💀 but yes, it’s all absolutely ridiculous
Paid-Not-Payed-Bot -31 points 1y ago
> sat and *paid* games on

FTFY.

Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*

* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
romanianhopscotch 12 points 1y ago
One of the worst parts of the video for me was when people from the audience were called on to basically say corporate “heartfelt” buzz words/phrases into the microphone and then everyone would clap afterward. So cringey and weird.
ittybittybakerkitty 9 points 1y ago
No one in my store has seen it ... When do we have time to lose a partner for 50min that isn't on a break?
UserNoUsername 2 points 1y ago
afaik (this could just be something my sm is ok with) the summer training is supposed to be done outside of a scheduled shift, either come in early, stay late or come in on a day off to do training
ittybittybakerkitty 8 points 1y ago
Nope, you're supposed to get paid for that shit
UserNoUsername 6 points 1y ago
yeah, you’re supposed to clock in and get your money, it’s just not meant to be scheduled.
rlogranite 6 points 1y ago
After seeing the video, I'm buying more Starbucks stonk!!
my_name_is_murphy 5 points 1y ago
I just want my 15 an hour. Everyone keeps asking about it and so many stores haven't received it yet. What the hell is the deal with that? Record profits and no answers.
Accomplished-Bad3856 2 points 1y ago
Ah! This looks like a carrot on a stick to keep you working for another 9 months during unprecedented employment scarcity!
cookiemonstah87 2 points 1y ago
I keep seeing that it's coming in [insert month]. When I interviewed, it was April. When i was hired, it was may. Then it was June, then July... just yesterday I saw August. We've already had 3 price increases since I was hired!

Also worth noting that I live in a high cost of living area but the bucks is only paying $0.50 over my state's minimum wage. I could make $5+ more for easier work at a lot of other stores near me, and I'm only starting to learn that they also provide things like healthcare.

I'm quitting. The bullshit is getting to be too much, and I'm always so damn tired! Now between NFTs and still not getting that $15, I can't even pretend I want to work here anymore.
tiger-paaw 5 points 1y ago
I just recently quit what is this
alanameowmeow 5 points 1y ago
Haven’t had a chance to watch it- but I feel everyone had very different degrees of work environment- some people have a great team with an awesome store manager, and others have to suffer through short staffing and crazy shifts frequently. Not to mention the Karens. So I feel like our personal experiences will have a lot to do with how we perceive the video
kamrissoon 4 points 1y ago
Woah I am reading this and all these comments as a partner that recently quit and I am concerned
Interesting_Winner96 4 points 1y ago

howard schultz... the ceo of starbucks
Prudent_Age_6926 3 points 1y ago
Have not seen this yet, what is NFT? Also a portable cold foam blender, what the hell is that really going to do!?
cookiemonstah87 0 points 1y ago
Whelp. I had a super long reply all typed up (NFTs are super complicated and no one fully understands them), but my phone decided I didn't need to post it! So TLDR: it's a crypto thing that is exponentially more detrimental to the environment than just coins, and people don't even seem to know what they're buying.

If you want a much better explanation that you'll find in this sub, I highly recommend this video. https://youtu.be/YQ_xWvX1n9g

It's long, but NFTs are complicated.
PluralPaul 2 points 1y ago
The man knows how to speak, but I'm hard-pressed to believe that's not all he knows how to do. I would be more than happy to see us implement all of what he said (save for the NFTs), but that's a big IF for a company that thinks we'll completely trust an apology and a "we'll do better" when profits have clearly come first even before I started 4+ years ago.
I'm also upset that I can understand why we'd be the best candidate for implementing NFTs. It's genius and stupid.
cookiemonstah87 0 points 1y ago
I haven't seen the video. Did he explain ANYTHING about the NFTs?
PluralPaul 2 points 1y ago
Not one bit. Only mentioned it's a possibility that they're looking into
RubySapphireSage 1 points 1y ago
I don’t even know what portable pitches , NFTs or Howard video we are talking about , my store is behind .
cookiemonstah87 1 points 1y ago
I'm honestly quitting, I'm done after this weekend. For a number of reasons, but the biggest one is that I can't morally support a company that supports NFTs in their current form, let alone work for said company. I've turned down art jobs (my actual career, Starbucks was a side-gig for me) offering $75/hour or more because they're NFT-related. Why in the hell would I want to keep breaking my body and only making $0.50 over minimum wage for a company that claims to be about sustainability, and then gets into NFTs?

I posted this link elsewhere, but for anyone not sure what an NFT is, I highly recommend this video. It's biased against them, so if you want both sides, you may want to talk to a crypto bro, but it explains them better than anyone or anything else I've personally come across. https://youtu.be/YQ_xWvX1n9g

The NFT thing is ridiculous but I’m not sure why you’re staying with the company if you’re just going to complain when they make our jobs easier? We’ve been asking for CF blenders for hot bar for YEARS.
ckt1138 8 points 1y ago
I want CF gone, I don't want more handy ways to make it. Doubling down on that stupid gimmick add-on is the worst thing for partners. If TikTok didn't turn VSCCF into the hottest thing on earth, then by now we would have likely phased out CF in general.

Funny enough, they never even mentioned VSCCF in the video, only regular CF. "HEALTHIER THAN WHIPPED CREAM" for the two people that ask for regular Cf, sure.
0x52and1x52 1 points 1y ago
we all want it gone but, realistically, it won't go anywhere until customers move onto the next trend (if they ever do). please, by all means, make my job easier.
ilovelimes333 1 points 1y ago
for most of us our stores are super small & the hot bar area is tiny aswell so its not even gonna fit. i think having a blender on hot bar will make everything more chaotic. for the stores that can fit one on hot bar, yall are gonna drop a lottt of things. i need to do my online training thing to see what u guys are talking about tho lmao ugh
0x52and1x52 1 points 1y ago
It's small and handheld just like a tea shaker. People are just hating to hate. It's going to be really helpful I think. So on your bar, you would have 2 steaming pitchers, a tea shaker, and a handheld CF blender. Sounds good with me!
punctiliousobserver -78 points 1y ago
Personally, I think the video was awesome. He made his points revolve around growth, which excites shareholders and the stock itself. The NFT thing is going to be big, look at whats happening already with famous folk like Snoop and Paris Hilton launching their own collections. I just hope he gets creative and decides to hand Starbucks NFT’s out to partners

Edit: Just a personal opinion, & Nfts are relatively new to the masses so I can understand why the incoming volume of down voters may not understand... NFT’s will retire you.
Zealousideal-Star448 38 points 1y ago
Nfts are dead lol. Id rather Howard focus on what partners have been complaining about for years. Cold foam pitchers on espresso bar isn’t what we were asking for. We are asking for we were asking for stuff like more hours, better headsets, drinks that don’t taste awful and aren’t frustrating to make.
Aratoast 24 points 1y ago
NFTs are also fricken *terrible* for the environment.

I look forward to the absolute silence on the matter from Partners For Sustainability.
TransposedApophenia 13 points 1y ago
What the absolute fuck is Starbucks going to possibly do with NFTs? It's a fucking coffee company.

i didnt watch the full thing but i really like howard and im glad he’s emphasizing starbucks’ past and how negatively its moved forward. hes really a guy that has barista interest in mind and i hope he proves that, theyre listening to our input- give it. (like coffee academy) i think alot of baristas are just new and never worked in what starbucks used to be: leadership and growth and coffee knowledge
