We should start charging for Ice cups (Cups of Ice)(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by MemesandSpeech
I said what I said.
I'm getting sick and tired of customers asking for like 6 Venti Ice cups just when I finished making 5 refreshers / frapps. Honestly toss in a dollar or two at our tip jar if you are saving lots of money getting FREE Ice cups at SB then at another place. It's really irritating at times to me -\_-.
dylanveyto154 points1y ago
That’s like charging for water man, it won’t happen lol
laura458453 points1y ago
Some stores do, one of my coworkers went to Santa Cruz, and she said they charged for extra cups. It makes sense, we have to pay for grocery bags already, and sometimes customers ask how much water/cups of ice cost.
sass_mouth3915 points1y ago
Licensed stores do charge for water in some areas
imtheirmom_9277 points1y ago
I work in a LS. When I ring it up, it literally says ..."1@ $0.00" so I don't waste my time.
cookiemonstah875 points1y ago
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it's illegal to charge for water. The stores that do aren't actually charging for the water, they're charging for the cup. There are two reasons this happens. 1. Bathrooms are for customers only and some require a key. 50 cent cup of water = customer, so people have a cheap option if they just need to pee. This is common in urban stores with a lot of local foot traffic. 2. Depending on the area, they charge for every cup no matter what is in it. 10-25 cent upcharge instead of a discount for a personal cup
BiochemistChef14 points1y ago
Makes total sense they do in SC. Water is in shortage and very expensive as a utility there. I've noticed most ice cups go unused so it just helps curb the waste
kaitrsmith13 points1y ago
i live in santa cruz and we have a charge for any cup at all, every drink has a 25 cent fee tacked on
Fhsdankpage1 points1y ago
Damn thank god I don’t live in the Bay Area everything there seems like they gonna charge you just to breath, I’m glad the Central Valley hasn’t gotten to this point
kaitrsmith1 points1y ago
it’s ridiculous
horriblyIndecisive1 points1y ago
Wait what i lived in SC until recently and never had to pay! My store also had a water dispenser in the cafe haha they were probably tired of serving waters.
Millerboycls0913 points1y ago
Except water is a drink.
A cup of ice is a drink component.
caffein8dnotopi8d6 points1y ago
And the cup is the thing that costs money.
adorkablysporktastic12 points1y ago
Starbucks is a mega corp, and you're worried about the 10 cents the cup is losing them?
They aren't going to give you the 10 cents you saved them. How does it affect you to give away cups of water, other than the 10 seconds to fill the cup?
drinkliquidclocks18 points1y ago
Because maybe then customers won’t waste my time making me fill 6 cups with ice during peak
moohooh4 points1y ago
I worked at Starbucks kiosk and they used to charge extra for extra stuff and water but not anymore for some reason. Promoted myself to customer so I guess good for me?
falselycathartic54 points1y ago
my store (licensed) has to charge for cups of water / ice because they’re plastic- it’s only 25¢ but it’s so nice to be able to tell them to go back to the register instead of asking me at handoff
iamnotabarbie19 points1y ago
Yeah I think we should charge for the cup bc at my store we make at least 30 waters at rush (the after school one) we get no labor for it too! It’s much easier if they had their own cups and we just dumped it in. OR if they had a little water/ice area (like a fridge type) so ppl could get their own. I am not 100% sure on the labor thing but from what I’ve been told it’s only from money costing items
caffein8dnotopi8d8 points1y ago
If it’s entered at the reg you should get labor for it.
iamnotabarbie4 points1y ago
Okay good I always try to make sure it’s rung up but my sm said labor/hours is based on money only
pink-smoke3 points1y ago
From what I understand, our system accounts for everything that is tacked on to a drink. So a latte would get more labor than a water, and a Frappuccino with modifications would get more labor than a latte. But everything that’s rung up gets accounted for with labor.
Ruxsti5 points1y ago
Same here, with tax it comes out to 27 cents
kristis323347 points1y ago
I set a limit honestly, (I’m sorry I can only do grande cups) or I’m sorry I can only give you 4 at one time. I hate when they walk up to the handoff and ask for water when we’re busy. I’m like sure buddy but you still need to order it at the register 😈
Responsible_Snow710931 points1y ago
Lol yea sometimes ill be on bar by myself and the customer will come ask for ice waters or ice cups. I have so many drinks in queue and if their water wasnt ordered at the register and not in the queue, then it makes it hard for me to stop what im doing especially since im solo on bar. Why do they pick the busiest person in the store and ask them for stuff? Go to the register person and if theyre ringing someone up, wait in line and theyll grab it for u or just put it thru to the bar
kristis323311 points1y ago
Lol like naw homie I’m not a machine
Responsible_Snow71093 points1y ago
Lol and sometimes ill tell them im backed up on orders but that ill grab it in just a moment. And theyll wait but i dont tell them to order at the register next time because I'm afraid that they're going to take it the wrong way and freak out on me but if I would say that to them I wouldn't mean it in a harsh way I would just mean it in a way like if you order water at the register then it'll be ready with your order when your other drinks come out so that you don't have to wait
deeciphered7 points1y ago
That's when someone with a mobile order goes "I need a pup cup"
Because they can find the busiest person and will somehow always ask them.
Responsible_Snow71093 points1y ago
Lol why do they refuse going to register to put it thru? Or the people that order in store, why dont they say it at the register? Like mobile orders, i understand kind of but even then they should atleast ask the least busiest person in the store or go to register
deeciphered5 points1y ago
The same with pup cups. If you order it at the register/speaker I'm happy to get it for you. If you ask me at the window after we've been standing there in silence both waiting for your stuff to be ready no. You've had all that time to ask me could you not ask at the window or before everything was ready for you to go? Between the speaker and here you decided you needed two more sandwiches a frap, 3 pup cups, a venti water no ice and a trenta ice no water??
cookiemonstah871 points1y ago
I've only been on the floor with my SM twice in all the time I've worked (is that normal? I think I've only seen them about once every other week since I got hired, and they're usually just sitting in the cafe doing schedules or interviews) and both times I was on window. I got told off for adding things to people's orders once they got to the window. I'm not sure which annoyed me more. The customers ordering things at the window, or the SM who I hardly ever see, telling me I'm doing something wrong when everyone else in the store does the same thing and I've never heard any mention of that not being allowed.
deeciphered1 points1y ago
It's technically not allowed to add things at window but also like they want us to have good customer scores and they're not exactly gonna be in the mood to leave a positive review when we send them back through the line to order the rest of their items.
Especially if it's a hot coffee it's just easier to grab it. If it's more than that I'll pull them up and tell them we'll have someone run it out to them so they don't kill our drive times. But we are supposed to sent them through.
The only time I don't mind is if they're hard of hearing or like have a reason why they can't order at the box which obviously situations like that do occur and I get that so that doesn't bother me, but when people can't compose their order before getting to the speaker and decide to only text their coworker/friends/family when in the line between the speaker box and the window it annoys me. Especially when it's food or multiple items or multiple cars do it. It always complicates things.
cookiemonstah872 points1y ago
See if I had known that we're not allowed to, that's fine! But no one ever told me that, and everyone else does it, so I thought we're supposed to until the SM told me off. One was an ice water, the other was something like a cake pop. Not like either took more than a few seconds. I wouldn't mind if my SM had just said "don't let people add things at the window." Also wouldn't mind as much if I actually saw the SM in the store more than once every two weeks. That was my first time being on the floor with them after working for several months!
cookiemonstah873 points1y ago
I'm short and wear a hat, so it's hard for people to make eye contact with me when I'm on bar. I use that to my advantage. Lol
iamnotabarbie2 points1y ago
I tell them that the person at reg has to get it. Bc then they either have to wait in line or they cut and everyone is mad at them. It honestly really helps bc then the cue doesn’t get interrupted
dkr182928 points1y ago
We should start charging for any drinks with NO ICE/ NO WATER, that should be the next move after the blended drink charge 🤡🤡
[deleted]10 points1y ago
[deleted]
dkr18295 points1y ago
They literally try to rob starbucks for all those drinks without ice/ water and expect us to fill it all the way up. No. I still tell them that we’re not supposed to fill any drinks all the way unless you did ask for extra when ordering. And if they mad at me, I’ll tell them to go to the register and talk to my SM or shift, cause I know either it’s my shift or my SM will gonna say the same thing as I did lol
[deleted]7 points1y ago
[deleted]
dkr18295 points1y ago
Yeah that’s the problem. And another fuckin annoying thing is the lemonade with rasberry and they want strawberry acai on top, and constantly ask whoever took their order to not mix it in even just a bit, or if they’re in the lobby, they will stare at us to see if it mix in, they will ask for it immediately. The thing is they do light ice and the acai is lighter than the lemonade so it always mix in pretty quick if the drink sit there for a while. They even said they have the video of how to make it PROPERLY, I swear if I have to deal with that women and her teenage daughter again, I’ll hand them my apron and let them come in make whatever the clip show :)
venusi_3 points1y ago
we would do that at my location except we know we’d get complaints and they’d send it back. much more trouble than it’s worth in a morning rush.
ovalings28 points1y ago
I hate making 4 trenta pink drinks no berries no ice and then having to fill up a bunch of ice cups. And then when we are out of refresher they get pissed and leave, we have some regulars that ask for a Trenta strawberri acai NO WATER NO ICE NO BERRIES it would be cheaper to get a gallon of grape fruit juice at the store.
leopardsocks4 points1y ago
We have a lady that hovers at hand off and makes u pour it until it’s almost overflowing in the cup 4 trenta no water no berries no ice and then demands uber eats sticker so it doesn’t spill on her. If I’m on bar, I always tell her we’re out of the stickers ☺️ hope u spill it on yourself your horrible wench 😊
moohooh2 points1y ago
Are there grape juice that tastes like starbuck's? I promoted myself to customer and tried purchasing the concentrate but only sold on ebay and expensive af.
makmelaf1720 points1y ago
What about those customers who wait at handoff and ask for 1 think at a time after u hand them their order .. " cup of ice, a straw. 1 Splenda, a spoon, ... oh and I'm sorry but can I get a cup of water too... can u get away from me ASAP
cpv_915 points1y ago
THIS...
Could you possibly tell me ALL your last second needs at the same time. I have like 5 drinks I'm working on and you are killing my times here.
[deleted]11 points1y ago
We have a lady who comes in, every single day. Orders 4 cups of water, no ice. 1 tall brewed coffee. And then asks for raw sugar, a bag, two forks, one knife and one spoon.
I have no idea why my managers still let her do this because she holds up our line every single time
nervousextrovert2 points1y ago
Probably gonna get downvoted but do y’all not ever prep it ahead of time if you know she’s a regular?? Or at least throw everything in the bag when you hear her voice. Like you know it’s her.. idk at my store it was really funny when i would hand it to them before they asked and they make a Pikachu :0 😂
Mea-fae_Owl739 points1y ago
We should! I get just getting a cup of water or ice when you didn’t order a drink with no ice but if you order a refresher with no ice and then ask for a cup of ice then there should be a charge! Any iced drink with no ice… we should charge a $1 for that cup of ice. Other places up charge a drink for light ice.
iamnotabarbie5 points1y ago
I think it’s should be when they order ice on the side kinda thing because they are getting 2x the product. I understand light ice because there is honestly a lot. Ik a lot of ppl would find a way to get around it but we could just make it mandatory to order at reg or something.
deeciphered4 points1y ago
I always get no ice because it takes me forever to drink my drink and it gets watered down. I totally support charging for light/no ice. You're adding additional product and when every car is doing it with multiple orders there's no way inventory will be right because it's hard to accurately account for how much of each item is being used. Its not the standard amount for sure.
cats_with_tentacles9 points1y ago
If starbucks goes to using the reusable cups like they keep talking about, I'm sure there will be a charge for ice and water
verapamil124 points1y ago
I would love to get my reusable cup filled with Ice and not have to waste a plastic cup as basically only an ice transport vessel.
[deleted]9 points1y ago
Ya dude fuck you and fuck nestle
blackboynxtdoor8 points1y ago
Do y'all remember I want to say probably right around a year ago where they shipped out cups that were only to be used for ice and water?? They had no logos on them, they were grande size. It lasted at my store for like a week and then the cups just stopped showing up.
rosebudftw7 points1y ago
lmao what?? water and ice should just be free you never know when someone just needs some. everyone agreeing is a weirdo. this sounds very nestle like.
daddyyareenn5 points1y ago
agreed, my store has several houseless people that come in frequently and get both cold and hot water (for making meals) and i think its great that its something we can provide. theyre usually the nicest customers too and all it is is water. im not losing anything and neither is anybody else. if someone is getting water usually i expect just an ounce of patience from them but aside from that theyre doing nothing wrong. ice is just frozen water and the same thing applies.
rosebudftw5 points1y ago
literally. like we make less than $15 an hour why do y’all care? it’s literally water if anything people should have that we don’t have any other decent rights in this bum ass country.
adorkablysporktastic5 points1y ago
This water gate keeping thing really is nestle like. Stanning for a \*mega corp\* is so not the vibe we need in 2022. Give away all the free product. Fill the drink up to the top with refresher. Why are so many people trying to protect SBs literal dimes and pennies? Is it really that bad? When i was a barista i gave zero f's if someone wanted a drink no ice, sure i'll fill it to the top with heavy cream if that's what you want. It's not costing \*me\* money.
cpv_914 points1y ago
You're technically right..
>It's not costing *me* money.
What most in this thread are saying isn't about protecting the
>*mega corp*
It's about the fact that when people cheat SB, the corp can afford the loss because they pass it along to us, the partners, the front line workers. The ones who now aren't going to see the raises that were promised since the end of last year, until August or when ever they shift them again.
Every time, someone enjoys the most recent tiktok hack of a their favorite drink to show SB that they've outsmarted them, try to think about those hard working baristas busting their asses for shitty wages that haven't kept up with the cost of living.
rosebudftw2 points1y ago
no literally when people add on at the window if they paid i’m like this on me lmao
honeybeebi2 points1y ago
*thank you*
honeybeebi6 points1y ago
as a partner at a store near a large homeless population……. can we not do this *especially* with summer approaching
nervousextrovert2 points1y ago
Fr like… just ring it in and you get labor from it but why charge? Why make the CEOS at starbucks richer and richer and keep hurting those who don’t have much? Like yeah lots of people finesse by saying no ice but we don’t know if they’re ordering like that because they want to treat themselves and have *just* enough to get themselves to work or something.. the third place is supposed to be empathetic.
Intelligent-Ad12736 points1y ago
I don’t have an ice machine at home so I usually get 4 venti cups of ice IF they aren’t busy and IF they don’t mind. I also always order at the register or ask for it at the speaker. I don’t think the problem is giving out cups of ice, I think the problem is the customer’s attitude.
RutabagaSoft19734 points1y ago
Howard needs to be focusing on our raises right now.
theepi_pillodu4 points1y ago
So if I bring my own cup, is that fine with you?
Expecting a civilized reply.
iamnotabarbie4 points1y ago
Yeah. Bc it takes more time to get a cup scoop the ice abs put a lid on. If you have ur own we can just dump it in bc you have to take the lid off and on. It’s not much time but we are expected to make drinks in a min or less so it goes a little faster
theepi_pillodu3 points1y ago
Cool. I usually carry my own cups. But during pandemic they told me not to bring my own. Not that the deal is back, I'll start using mine. Thank You.
sadthrow4203 points1y ago
I just wish the burden wasn’t on bar baristas. I don’t mind making the water/ice but not when I have 20 mobile order tickets that came through all at once and cafe orders to be done. No idea how that would work. Hell, have an ice/water dispenser in the cafe!
Our store stopped allowing ice/water in sizes larger than grande since it was eating up too much of our time/cups? Some baristas give out trenta water anyway, but I think it’s setting a bad standard for our customers because “well last time they gave me a trenta water!” Too bad, baby, I’m more stubborn than you are so you’re losing this battle!
cookiemonstah873 points1y ago
The ones who order a trenta strawberry acai with no ice, no water, no berries and a trenta cup of ice... I feel like we should be charging for two refreshers at that point
giuseppinameurer3 points1y ago
Come on man. Chill.
djk11012 points1y ago
Idk man, I’ve never had an issue or complaint with people wanting ice or water. Even the large orders. I’d only be annoyed if they’re insisting immediately that they get it, while I have other drinks to make. But that’s an attitude issue, not a free cup of ice/water issue. I’m happy a place exists that people can go to get water or ice for free. Yes it can be an inconvenience, but I’d rather it inconvenience us, than incur a charge on customers and become a barrier to others who are less fortunate. Even $.25 can be a cost someone has to consider if they can give up on dire situations. I think the benefit outweighs the cost to workers personally.
Aliciarox111892 points1y ago
It should all be available to order on the app at least
garbagecandoattitude2 points1y ago
Starbucks is never going to charge for ice or water. It was massive bad PR 20 years ago: https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2001/sep/26/september11.usa3
BeautifulSoul2121 points1y ago
Panda Express charges for ice water.
Tania12901 points1y ago
I was told that if we ring them up, our store gets reimbursed a minimal amount for every water or ice cup.
dallizzlee1 points1y ago
I don’t know why it bothers me SO much when someone orders a drink with no ice and a cup of ice on the side. Like, why do I care? Starbucks is expensive AF and the company sucks so please get all you can from them…. Why does it irritate me so much?!
dakokopuffs1 points1y ago
i don't really care as long as they're rung up so labor is accounted for. BUT i do think that if someone orders a drink with no ice, we should be able to say no if they ask for a cup of ice on the side.
Honey_Ginger1 points1y ago
I've gotten to the point where i try not sweating the small stuff, corp isn't going to come personally celebrate me for saving them a few cents or having the best times, so I'm whatever about it, i give the amount of effort they pay me for. 💕
venusi_1 points1y ago
DUDE SOMEONE WOULD GET FUCKING UBEREATS ICE CUPS. 6 Trenta ice cups, same person, every friday night 5 minutes before delivery orders close at 9:30. it’s so horrible and we’d have to decide if we wanted to use 3 of the 2cup bags or one of the ginormous 6/8 cup bags… ALL FOR SOME ICE??? please just get up and go to your grocery store it’s like $2-3 Plwase.
tinydesthique1 points1y ago
i think it should be limited to one per person, per hour. i wouldn’t charge for a cup of ice/water tho. i get it can get out of hand, but if i were a customer, i also wouldn’t wanna pay $3 for water. so i guess 1 cup of ice/water per person, per hour would be more beneficial and maybe they should pay if they order more than one. so it really depends.
badatlife151 points1y ago
Similar idea, but I think there should be a charge for ordering something at the drive thru window.
Hazel_is_Trans1 points1y ago
Mt store been out of ice for weeks
Willing_Adeptness_401 points1y ago
Some stores do charge the cup fee but that’s only 10 cents lol

Necessary_Low9390 points1y ago
There should be a policy that iced water is medium size only.
And why are those people that ask for cups of water mad rude lol
badatlife153 points1y ago
I would agree, but living in AZ I understand why people want larger sizes, especially our homeless population.
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
Do all food places give free water? Just wanna know this.
badatlife152 points1y ago
I don’t know I hate drinking anything but bottled water so I rarely ask. Last summer they tried doing these water only cups that were somewhere between a grande and venti and people would definitely ask for a bigger size. I don’t know the solution but it seems like a very small thing to be concerned about.
Necessary_Low9393 points1y ago
I honestly don’t mind it if they are nice about it and get on line for it.
rosebudftw1 points1y ago
this is a policy at my store we order water cups
Necessary_Low9390 points1y ago
Like if u r nice I don’t mind giving u any size. It’s those bitches that say make it a venti and no thank you. Like bitch we sell bottled water too if u gonna be a cunt bout it. And what’s the deal with the getting it by the bar? Did they think we will charge them? ORDER IT AT THE REGISTER SO I GET A TICKET
