Actually once upon a time had a customer confess to me they had just been diagnosed with cancer. Like, I'd love to be there for you, I really would. But I don't know you beyond your coffee order, so how about we not? I still feel guilty for my reaction, which was basically stunned silence, but I honestly don't know how I was SUPPOSED to react.
jsdod41 points1y ago
"Welcome to Starbucks, how is your day going?" "I got cancer"
How do you move forward from that?

We get people at the drive thru telling us they're putting their dog down, or they just had a parent die...like okay but do you want your receipt?
I'm sorry for the loss, but I just make coffee man.

I’ve had like 4 different people tell me about how their mom or dad or one lady her son had just passed away sometime earlier in the week. When I tell you my heart sinks to my stomach and I don’t know what to do the first thing I say is “oh my god I’m so sorry to hear about your loss” then it doesn’t go much further than that because I don’t know what the heck to say after that. So long story short I’m in the same boat as you my friend.

I am not religious but I asked the lady who confessed her sad thing to me if she was. When she said yes I asked if I could say a quick prayer for her. I used to be hella religious so… idk it seemed right. Afterwards she kinda cried a bit and said thank you, you pulled the heavens down to me right now. It was quite the experience lol

On the same week a regular’s fiancé died. Another regular’s dad died and her son went to the hospital the same day, and later that night another regular said his wife just got diagnosed with dementia. I found it all out on the same day so for my last 10 I just cried a little.

I have my set script when talking to customers, it throws me off when they say anything that's not in my script 😂
vertigo00o5 points1y ago
lmao yeah same the amount i have to say “do you want your receipt or a straw” and “how’s your week/weekend/day going” is crazy and anything off script just messes up my sequencing

this morning a customer made a joke at the speaker box and all i could say was well yeah … haha your total is …

Our window register person could not shut up about the Johnny Depp Amber Heard Trial. Finally someone told them that that probably wasn’t a good topic to discuss with customers 😂

I had a barista ask how my day was going, and I pulled my Sphnyx kitten out of my shirt. Their day got better!
kurokurokii10 points1y ago
I’ve learned I can’t ask customers if they have fun plans because it backfires and they’ll say something along the lines of, “No, I’m going to a funeral” or something similar.
vertigo00o1 points1y ago
yeah i stopped saying that too! someone had their dying dog in their car with them and i had to take my 10 early cuz it threw me off so much 😭😭😭

I've got three solid questions and that's IT, anything else derails my conversations, but luckily enough I tend to have success with just my core questions: How are you, where are you headed, and in response, (if they say work) ask how long they've been doing that/do you enjoy it? If they say school, ask if they have a major/what their favorite or least favorite current class is. Normally by the time they answer their drink is ready

Question as a customer! Do you guys actually like talking to us at the window? My drive thru window people always say “what are you getting up to today?” And my answer is always “oh just running some errands”. Are you guys told to make conversation even if the customer doesn’t? Genuinely just curious. And appreciate all of you!
courtordereddrugtest3 points1y ago
personally, i love it! tbf though, i took this job cause i wanted to be around people lmao. it kinda makes me sad when it’s busy and a customer wants to connect but i have to go take another car ngl
kriska_0135 points1y ago
My favourite question is what they are watching these days. I have a nice list of shows to watch now.
tantelope3 points1y ago
I was training for the first time a few days ago. They put me on window bc that’s the easiest thing to learn. My FIRST DAY. I initiate a customer connection, and they go, “well my husband died…” and start talking for like 5 minutes into their car. I can’t hear fucking anything they’re saying and my manager is poking me trying to get her to leave but I’m just 😯 i don’t even know what to say

i had a customer tell me her brother just died after she had ordered his favorite drink but thought it was gross and wanted a remake (it was like a passion tea lemonade with soy and raspberry).
i was just like oh 😧
flower_garden_4 points1y ago
Oh my God, that is both horrible and absolutely hilarious 😂 I would've been speechless too 😧

Once had a customer admit to me that their mother was dying and it was one of her last days. She mentioned she was getting coffee for the 6 hour drive to visit her before she passes. All I could say was that I was sorry and that she was in my thoughts. I’m not good comforting strangers.

In april 2020 a customer in dt told me her aunt got covid. I said oh no I hope she’s doing alright and the lady just looked at me and said “she’s dead”

That part

I feel like I possibly come off rude because I never ask the customer questions (except the regulars) and they are the ones to ask me "how is your day?". It feels awkward to answer because I have to go "yeah... anyway, what was your drink again?" or "oh cool... um. your total is __. ". I have co-workers who go on full length back and forth banner with customers and as awesome that is to help our "customers connecting" it holds up the line and I'm forced to stand there waiting or be the asshole to say "hey, we have a line of drinks that need to be made and more customers waiting. I need you to start making some of these drinks" or "hey, can we cut the conversation short? I need help on bar".
boib2322 points1y ago
My favorite response to being asked by customers "how are you doing?" Is
"Well I'm here..."

This true for every sellng job 😂

I was in a really good mood one day and talking with everyone at the drive thru and some of them were like real conversational and talking, but I couldn’t hear most of them over the Frappuccino blenders, the music, the ovens beeping, the espresso machines and so on. I always just smiled and nodded and hoped whatever they were saying was positive lmao.
