i’m a shift at a small cafe only store and we have another shift (just became a shift after 4 years) and she smells awful! one partner said he didn’t notice the smell until i told him to pay attention and he smelled it and he said he thought that was the smell of the pipes backing up with sewage (an issue we’ve had before). another shift has talked to our SM twice and she told us the issue was being taken care of and she talked to the stinky shift but it’s been months now and if anything it’s worse. it’s gotten to the point where no one wants to be in the back room with her and i can’t send 10s and meals at the same time as her and no one wants to bar with her because it’s overwhelming and just an awful experience. customers have called and complained, i hear it all day from baristas and it’s getting to be too much. my next step is the DM and talking with him about ALL the issues with her but would the DM even be able to do anything? can i contact anyone else? it’s really affecting the partner experience and i’m over it

Have you tried talking to the person?
You don’t know their situation, they could be homeless for all you know.
Instead of making it an issue and practically talking shit about this person with the rest of the store, maybe come together as a team and try to help said person?
You’re literally trying to get someone fired for not having good hygiene.

she’s not homeless. ik her situation. i’m not trying to get her fired but she’s been talked to about it and nothing is changing and it’s affecting everyone at work. if we can notice it so can customers which shouldn’t be allowed either

and this partner isn’t a good person anyway. she’s misgendered a trans partner at least 3 times, has said racist things to customers, told a partner her autism was weird, makes mean comments about me, does not do her job, and makes it very hard to enjoy coming to work. people won’t cover shifts if she’s working and often call of if they’re going to be working with her i promise she’s not a victim of anything

One issue at a time and don’t blend the issues. You’ve stated she’s been talked to before, what was said and what was the solution? This is one of those issues no one wants to confront. Hygiene is important, however if she has a medical condition or religious practice causing this, tread lightly and always with respect. It’s really an HR conversation.

she doesn’t have either of those. sm has only said she’s talked to her and doesn’t say what was said or anything so we don’t know the solution but it’s been weeks since she been talked to and if anything it’s worse idk if i should go to hr or the dm

Yikes, it's time for your SM to talk to this person in the kindest way possible. If customers are noticing, that is BAD.

We had something kind of like this happen at our store. The girl was working a second job that requires overnights. It was very taxing as you can imagine, and she didn't always have time to shower between shifts. Someone suggested she bring a change of clothes, I think. I wasn't part of the convo, but the problem has been remedied.

Also, we have a partner transitioning at our store and had this issue. I brought it up to the shift, and they said it could be a hormonal thing. That's always a possibility. Unfortunate for everyone involved though.

the sm has apparently talked with her about already it’s just not changing there’s plenty other issues we could talk to the dm about but i’m trying to hold off until she transfers but the smell is just way too overwhelming to ignore

Ugh that's really all unfortunate. From your comment to someone else, she sounds terrible without the hygiene issue on top of things.

It's part of our dress code not to smell like shit and not have overly strong perfume.
luigigotbigtitties [OP] 3 points 1y ago
yeah ik like we’re technically not even allowed to smell good but we all have to suffer bc she smells awful? makes no sense

my store has had issues with people who don’t have good hygiene, it’s horrid 😭
luigigotbigtitties [OP] 4 points 1y ago
i don’t think hygiene is the only issue it’s her clothes and bo like ik her situation and she has the ability to not smell but she does

She sounds like a person who doesn’t shower due to depression or what not. U should bring it up to the dm and if the dm tells u to just breathe through ur mouth then take it up to the resources. Proper hygiene is mandatory in a food business.

Years ago we all had to watch a training video on how to approach and talk to someone about bettering their hygiene. Not sure if it’s still in the system to watch.
