Scared I’m going to get fired (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Illustrious_Ad_8643
So i am decently new, I started working with sbux back in January. Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances I have had to call out quite a few times in the past month- I was sick and throwing up one morning at the end of March, two weeks ago a good friend passed away, and then this past week on Sunday I had to call out for pretty much the whole week because I injured my back pretty bad and couldn’t even move. My boss was pretty sweet about all of it and told me to rest, but when I tried to call out for yesterday on Friday she told me to find someone. I couldn’t find anyone so I forced myself to fight the back pain and go in but as I started to head to work yesterday and I got a text in our stores group chat that they needed someone to cover my shift. I kind of took it as they accepted my call out so I turned back and rested for the day. I told my boss I would be back in for Sunday on Friday. However, Today I woke up and they had posted in the group chat that my shift needed to be covered. I called the store and said that I was going in today and my shift seemed relieved but also told me that my shift for today was crossed off and that they must’ve assumed I was going to call out. Now I’m terrified to go back in because I am afraid my boss is going to let me go since she crossed off my shift for today even though I told her I would be back. Should I be scared? How do I calm down.

Update- I didn’t get fired and my boss was actually cool about it.

I don’t know specifically about sbux but almost nobody is getting fired for excessive calling off. Retention is really tough for companies, my partner runs a school+daycare and she would have to close down if she fired everyone who called off after running out of PTO. People call off all the time and she’s forced to ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

Your SM might have just assumed you needed the time off for your injury and planned to try and get your shift covered. These all sound like reasonable reasons to need time off, and if a manager is mad-- they would be making it a lot more obvious. If you feel like you're being retaliated against for calling out, you can always call HR and get it figured out!!

Seriously, we have a partner who we just can't fire. She would only work one day a week, call off half that time, leaving only two people to run the store when the openers leave. But we can't fire her. She literally hasn't been scheduled in maybe a year now, but she is still technically an employee of Starbucks. We just can't actually fire her lol. You'll be fine :)

A partner can get fired for excessive tarries or call outs. If you really think you are going to get fired ask someone if your name has been removed or crossed out in the next two weeks schedule. In the future you will want a doctors note for things like a hurt back (this will also help if the doctor thinks you shouldn’t be carrying anything heavy) or anything involving a medical reason to call out for three days or longer.

Anything longer then 3 days out in a row and you need to call Sedgwick and do a temporary LOA.
