I prefer this to being at the store for longer and getting paid for less time, to be honest.
bekalh4 points1y ago
yeah sometimes if I’m scheduled for 6 hours I just leave 10 min early so I can just leave without a half😂

reclusivegiraffe [OP]-9 points1y ago

BenignRaccoon1 points1y ago
Homie, when i worked at sb i was working quite literally a maximum of 3 hours a shift 2-3 days a week (and that was with full availability).

What's wrong?
UserNoUsername19 points1y ago
5.75 hours. effectively working for longer than a 6hour shift while only getting a single 10 minute break, rather than being scheduled for 6 hours and receiving a 10 minute break as well as a 30 minute lunch break
Outrageous_Sorbet_7216 points1y ago
my manager does this so that the baristas get more hours - having a 6 hour shift means you’re only on the floor for 5.5 hours as opposed to a 5.75 hour shift where you get paid the full time you’re there. also it means less lunches for SSVs to have to fit in. i much prefer it this way.
RinnTheOtter-2 points1y ago
That logic sounds flimsy, you’re assuming you can’t schedule longer shifts due to breaks taking up hours, which they don’t. And in terms of SSV’s jobs being made easier, funny how they still get scheduled 8 hour shifts…
Maybe we should just cut the SSV’s shifts down too, that way their job will be even more easy when they don’t have to worry about running their own halves 🙃

True. It sucks theres no 30 and a 10. They do get paid 5 hours and 45 mins tho rather than being scheduled 6 hrs and taking a 30 cuz then they would be getting paid for only 5 and a half hours
gingergal-n-dog2 points1y ago
I lhad an sm who scheduled like that exclusively to avoid meal breaks. It was awful, but ssv kinda liked it. I understand a single break period sucks, it's another reason to unionize. That shift ahould have a 20 minute break period imo. You can always ask to come in early. With the callouts you might be able to get more hours and a lunch period. Tbh I'd s be most annoyed with the time frame all fking day.
uwumoment6 points1y ago
id rather do this than sit and be unpaid for 30 mins of my time
moohooh5 points1y ago
Looks about right for starbucks lmao. They scheduled me for 4hrs a few times. Glad I'm out
HSinvestor4 points1y ago
This is literally every shift I've had for the last two months.
newday20012 points1y ago
maybe your shift might be understanding and give you a second ten if you ask nicely. these shifts arent common at my store luckily and there's a couple of shifts that will let you get an extra break, especially if you get brain fried easily like me.
Igottajumpthruhoops1 points1y ago
If a shift is 6+ hours then you’re required to take a 30 minute un payed break. 10a-4p you end up being paid for 5.5 hours but required to be there 15 minutes more.
Also managers schedule like that for several reasons, the most common is again related to the breaks. If everyone was having to take a 30, managing the breaks in at a reasonable time for each employee becomes difficult without causing a gap in coverage.
If you’re complaining about the length of the shift: I hate to break it to you but that is the standard length for non managers. Think about it like this: Store open 5a-9p so shifts become 5-10:45, 10:45-4:30, 4:30-10:15. Open, mid, and close become ~equal shift lengths and no breaks required leaving gaps in coverage. It’s also convenient to meet a standard of 20 hours for each employee. 4 shifts puts you a 23 hours which nets you all benefits and keeps you part time.
If you want more hours then the recommendation is to offer to pick up more shifts either at your own store or others nearby. And sometimes the easiest way to do it: show up with hat and apron and say “Who wants to go home?” As long as the shift/manager are cool with it I can guarantee that a majority of the time some one will take the offer.

> minute un *paid* break. 10a-4p
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

This seems very normal for my store. This is every shift I’ve had since I came back from Covid in the beginning of February, and I work 5 days a week

I have personally had to fight with every store manager I’ve had to maintain my 8 hour shifts, to the point of talking to the DM and being told that 30 hours is considered full time, which is BS
nutria_twiga1 points1y ago
I take it this isn't the usual thing for you?
My store, you get this or you get 4 hours.
Necessary_Low9391 points1y ago
In my state u get a 30 for even working 5.5 hrs.
Decent_Wall13801 points1y ago
that’s all i ever get. i’ve only ever had two lunch breaks in three months with the company
mozziemozzie1 points1y ago
it’s 6 hours….
ringronies1 points1y ago
