Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

I haven't seen many people mention this, but isn't it infuriating that corporate in Seattle controls the thermostat of every store? (self.starbucksbaristas)

It's insane that Seattle controls the temperature in my store in Texas. I can't name a day where I worked and didn't have sweat DRIPPING down my face because of how hot it is in my store. We can't lower it by more than 1-2 degrees, and I know corporate doesn't understand the heat of texas. I'm angry that we can't control our own temperature y'all. It's insulting.

I can't even imagine what it's like in Texas. It's bad enough at my store here in Ohio where it's kept close to 75 Fahrenheit. Just...why? It's uncomfortable for the customers, too. But I guess they want to save on air conditioning rather than make anyone comfortable.

Oklahoma store here AND I have hyperhydrosis (sweaty bitch disease). Every day I wonder why the thermostats are not at least separated into regions… I have been sweating my ass off since March and now everyone else is too. Especially on ovens!!

My store got a new manager last year, and he bought (with his own money) covers for the thermostats. Mind you, nobody had EVER touched them before. Lol

So one day I asked him why he put them on, and he said to ensure we don’t mess with it. And I just said, You realize that all you have to do is tell us not to touch it, not that anyone has even bothered to, or has the time to mess with it. And also… you do know that is controlled by corporate, right?? He said nothing. When the tech came to repair our AC around thanksgiving, he said that our store was the first store he’s ever seen with a cover in all his years working on Starbucks stores. I lost my shit when HE told my manager, You know this doesn’t do anything, right? And then just picked up his tools and left. I still think about that tech sometimes. Lol

It's already in the 80s with 90% humidity when I go in to open. I live in a swamp, Louisiana. We start sweating immediately. Another reason to unionize? Local temperature control??
Busy_Calligrapher994 9 points 1y ago
it has been so humid in my store and i’m concerned if we aren’t able to cool it down more over the summer we’re gonna have mold problems :( ice melts in drinks so fast and condensate immediately it’s crazy

Put a hot sandwich on your temp sensor lmao that’s what we do
xCherryBombshell 6 points 1y ago
As a fat person sweat drips into my eyes constantly and burns them while I work.

Literally like Satan taking a piss in my eye.

And I'm in Canada. Bless you lol

I'm always fascinated at my store by the difference in temperature in the cafe vs behind the counter. It's easily a 10 degree difference, and of course the thermostat measures the temp on the cafe side. My guess is it's a combination of the sun rising on and hitting the bar side of the store most of the day, and all the machines and such running. We're all sweating our asses off as customers complain that it's too cold.

In vegas our store doesn’t have ac because “the ceilings are to high”

Have all your friends and neighbors call Starbucks corporate and complain about how hot in was in that particular store when they went in to order a coffee.
It might work to lower the temp in store and your friends will get an apology and money loaded onto their card for their trouble.

Starbucks listens to customers, not "partners".

Your SM can just email in and get the like base temperature changed. Our store does it twice a year to keep it reasonable temp.
Sirmarchboy22 4 points 1y ago
What...? We control our air in my store. We have a limit we can go to each way but yeah...
[deleted] 3 points 1y ago
Every single retail store I’ve worked at has been controlled by a phoenix headquarters. There were many times when I worked at Petsmart where we had to shut down our grooming salon because it got too hot and HQ refused to turn on the air conditioning
copicking 2 points 1y ago
It's ridiculous, especially because of how humid it gets in Midwest stores; I can't even imagine how bad it gets in the south. How can they expect us to move quickly for drive times when our pants are sticking to our legs with sweat?
FfierceLaw 2 points 1y ago
Wait - is that true? I had a family member doing an internship in the Pacific Northwest and it was impossible to find an apartment with air conditioning. Those folks out there just don’t do air-conditioning. No wonder they have no heart for us Southeasterners. This would explain so much

Wow I'm so sorry. As someone in WA state the heats always on and it's awful. Also, they control our store lightshere. WTF

Partner in Seattle here, the store temps are shit here too
jesthere 2 points 1y ago
The high temperature today in Houston was 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
OcelotSad6385 2 points 1y ago
Yes, the temperature is controlled and you can adjust it +\- 2 degrees, but you shouldn’t be uncomfortable. If you are, create a ticket under HVAC\inconsistent temperature. There may be something wrong with your system. If the system is operating as designed, it could be your sensors need to be relocated to get an accurate space temp. Most stores have at least two HVAC units- one for the lobby and one or more for the production space. Why, you ask? Because Starbucks know those areas have different needs, especially due to the heat load from the equipment behind the bar. If it doesn’t get better after the service call, ask your DM to loop in your FSM- they can investigate further.

Trust me, no one wants you to be sweating and uncomfortable. It’s silly to think that Starbucks would intentionally do that to you- what purpose would that serve??

Ask for help.

Interesting, I'll have to try that, thank you!! I've brought it up to the shift leads and they all agree it sucks that we all drop sweat all the time. I'll ask my manager about it!!
OcelotSad6385 2 points 1y ago
Definitely loop them in, but you can create a digital ticket yourself- be sure to be really specific in the notes- i.e. too hot behind the line, thermostat says it’s X degrees, but partners are too hot…etc. There’s a QRG on the hub on how to adjust the temp. Sometimes people mess with it too much and press the wrong buttons and it ends up in override, which effectively makes the system think you are closed, so the AC won’t engage, no matter the temp. Might be something to print and post by the thermostats!

Im in a PA starbucks. At my store, the lowest u can turn down the thermostat is to like 68 or 70. But like 71 or 72 for the highest and that shit can get pretty freakin hot at my store with 71/72 degrees. My shift always keeps it at its highest at thay temp. And we sweat our asses off and one of us always goes in the back and turns it down. My manager is pregnant and even shes like fuck this lol im turnin it down. Like my shift thinks that she can just boil all of us and control how we all feel that day which is dying from heat exhaustion lol wth

Brief_Coat6526 1 points 1y ago
Especially if you work in the RGV
darkwolf523 0 points 1y ago
Oh boy. I didn’t know that. I just got used to it and never said a word 😂 😂 the more you know
Hoax_Pudding_Cup 0 points 1y ago
Everytime I walk into the back I have to grab a jacket because it's fucking freezing in my store.
Bhaisaab86 -7 points 1y ago
The first think I do when I go in is set every ac the lowest it can get. When customers complain it’s cold I explain corporate controls it. When partners complain it’s cold, I tell them to work harder and stop standing around.
