submitted by Technical-Insect-675
so my store decided to write support all women #mothersday on our cups and apparently a few people called corporate and complained about it being political?? it was my idea and i’m a little nervous about losing my job over it :/ someone please tell me i’m overthinking :,(
rwwhys 190 points 1y ago
I doubt they will fire you because it was done with good intentions. but that being said it could have been seen in a bad way because the the abortion conversation going on right now in the USA
BlackberryOpposite31 61 points 1y ago
Yeah I do think it wasn’t super appropriate given the abortion issues going on right now. I also wouldn’t write anything like that because Mother’s Day can he extremely difficult for women who have lost children or people who are struggling to convince.
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 20 points 1y ago
yeah i guess i just didn’t think :/ it was bad judgment on my part for sure
Accomplished-Bad3856 28 points 1y ago
In my personal opinion, curses upon the whiners. What are the optics on this? If Starbucks fires employees for supporting women does that mean Starbucks *doesn’t* support women or mothers? Seems like an easy message for them to get behind.
BlackberryOpposite31 4 points 1y ago
Starbucks definitely isn’t going to fire them over this and even if they did that wouldn’t mean they don’t support women. It means they don’t support writing messages on cups that could be upsetting for some people.

Yup- my mother died, I'm TTC with no luck after over 2 years... Mother's day is hard enough. I appreciate all the companies the last few years that let you opt out of Mother's day emails etc.
sheep_heavenly 8 points 1y ago
It also carries the risk of misgendering people who would not be considered mothers if they were parents or continuing to remind people who have a poor relationship with their mother, whatever that circumstance is, that today is the day they don't get to celebrate. It's something best left said directly to people in your personal life that it is relevant to, not shotgun blasted into every crowd. Sundays already sucked and yesterday I just wanted to crawl into a hole between a combination of reasons we both brought up.

It is weird and sad that some people hate women so much that they think supporting women is inherently political
Acrobatic_Edge1996 7 points 1y ago
Sometimes people have trauma related to Mother’s Day. And nothing is ever done for Father’s Day, so it should be equal. Either do it for both or neither at all.
[deleted] 55 points 1y ago
It wouldn’t fall on you, it’d fall on your leader who decided it was okay (Also I think it’s okay but it’s Starbucks corp so y’know)
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 27 points 1y ago
yeah it was me who’s a ssv and another ssv so sadly :(
[deleted] 22 points 1y ago
Honestly, I wouldn’t worry that much. They’ll probably just tell you not to do it again
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 17 points 1y ago
the other thing was is that our phone has caller id and it came up as someone’s name so one of the other ssv’s thinks it was someone pretending to be corporate too 😭
Adeptness-Lucky 38 points 1y ago
Wait- so “corporate” called the store and spoke with you about it, telling you they had complaints from customers…? If that’s the case, babe, you don’t worry yourself at all. That’s not at all how this type of thing would be handled, if a customer legit had a problem.
Lordofjones 14 points 1y ago
Corporate wouldn’t call you and tell you to stop, your SM would.
KiwiBeginning4 43 points 1y ago
nothing political about supporting women, unless you're a misogynist
disco_covfefe 3 points 1y ago
not all women are or want to be mothers
reddskeleton 3 points 1y ago
If we’re that deep into misogyny and replicating Gilead, then we’re in big trouble
borrowedurmumsvcard 1 points 1y ago
that’s what i’m thinking. like, supporting a whole sex isn’t a political belief
Eastern_Effective_49 38 points 1y ago
Who tf complained. Customers can be such losers my gosh
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 9 points 1y ago
no literally like bro 😭
nickintheback08 19 points 1y ago
You underestimated this country’s hatred for women
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 5 points 1y ago
yes sadly :(
nickintheback08 7 points 1y ago
I do think the optics of you getting in trouble for something so benign would get a ton of backlash. I wouldn’t worry too much about a few grumpy old dudes.
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 3 points 1y ago
thank you :)
Murder-of-Crows8 1 points 1y ago
It’s not just this country - we are after all third-class beings in this world
ProfessionalRock7940 10 points 1y ago
Big oof. Mother's day is a touchy subject for a lot of people...
cookiemonstah87 10 points 1y ago
Considering Starbucks has groups for partners to be part of including the... I can't remember the name... women's impact group? Is that it? Anyway, I think you're probably fine. That would be like if someone wrote "support LGBT" during pride and then people complained. Human rights shouldn't be a political thing anyway (though clearly they are)
chateauduchat 10 points 1y ago
It seems like so many people nowadays want so badly to be offended. Anyway, I wouldn’t worry about it at all.
disco_covfefe 9 points 1y ago
not all women want to be mothers so conflating those two is problematic imo. I don't think you should or will get in any more trouble based on what you said, but I would be irritated if I was the customer. as a woman in my 30s I am exhausted by constant assumptions about my fertility. I do not want to be wished happy mothers day 🤷🏼‍♀️
beeilluminati 8 points 1y ago
TIL supporting mothers is political lmfao
livingfortheliquid 8 points 1y ago
Well, talking to my mother always gets political, do I understand. /s.
Acrobatic_Edge1996 5 points 1y ago
Honestly I can kinda understand. Lots of people have trauma from mothers, and not every woman wants to BE a mother. Plus nothing like this is ever done for Father’s Day, but it’s the same premise. Doesn’t mean the people hate women, it could just be a trauma thing. Don’t think you’ll lose your job, but also don’t assume.
Mariela_osorio 4 points 1y ago
People called corporate over…cups? Oh my. Oh my goodness. 😭
SimpleRevelation 5 points 1y ago
I wouldn’t call corporate, but I would have had a melt down in the store and spoke with the manager to get them removed. I lost my mom a couple years ago, and with all the Covid deaths & infertility spiking, it wasn’t a good move. I’m going to be honest. It’s a sensitive subject to a lot of us, so be careful who you say it to.
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 4 points 1y ago
honestly with the usual customers we get im not surprised now :(
yarncloudsandcoffee 4 points 1y ago
The intention behind this is really sweet!

One of our local stores does inspirational messages in the AM; like “be kind” or “have a great day!” (Really generic, positive messages) I would love to see some more specific for the timing, like “enjoy summer” or something. Idk. It’s sweet though!

And as a customer, I feel like this is something I’d read from an uptight person who wanted to police someone for trying to be positive.

If you only approached it with good intentions, then let it go. Its a learning experience :)
tbb10 4 points 1y ago
It could come off as political because it’s Mother’s Day and not women’s day also saying support ALL women could be interpreted as support her no matter what, right or wrong and simply for her gender, and not for the person herself.

You should always stay neutral and not say/post/ do things that might trigger/offend people no matter how extreme you might think they’re being. It sucks. But that’s business
Tallgothwife 6 points 1y ago
Thats just objectively wrong. Early on in the pandemic we had a sign that only said “Please do not scream at your barista, they are going as fast as they can” and people called corporate and complained because we were telling them to stop screaming at us. After the sign was taken down we just started kicking people out, it was about 30 people in the next 2 months.
pervasivebarrier 3 points 1y ago
lol rip bozo
v_is_4_violet 3 points 1y ago
Oooh please let them do or say anything about this. I will support the fuck out of you... And I'm most certain your fellow partners here will too!
v_is_4_violet 3 points 1y ago
If possible... Keep your phone on you and record any conversations about this. It might be your biggest defense. It could be with a boss you like... You can never be too safe. They're all you friends and here to support you until they're not.
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] 2 points 1y ago
i’m supposed to go talk to my SM about it today and i’m slightly worried 😭😭
Mission-Accident-917 2 points 1y ago
friendly reminder dont do anything fun a customer will act like something nice was a personal attack
Murder-of-Crows8 2 points 1y ago
Overthinking it. I get feeling crappy about it not turning out as you had hoped but please don’t be so hard on yourself. You are certainly not the first to think of an idea that failed or was misconstrued; you won’t be the last. It’s not your fault that people these days are simply selfish, entitled, ridiculous babies. Just remember this when you’re at the other end. Always be kind.
Magnumxl711 1 points 1y ago
I'm guessing all of the callers were men
Technical-Insect-675 [OP] -1 points 1y ago
i wouldn’t be surprised :(
lilkiosk 0 points 1y ago
If a partner at my store who is gay can write flirty things on the cups of any and all male customer he finds attractive and not get fired, I think your job is safe. But yes, I would say that given the current political situation and the sensitivity surrounding Mother’s Day in general, it would be wise in the future to just be more cautious! But I still commend your efforts for trying to connect with customers :)
VictorianLibra22 2 points 1y ago
That’s inappropriate for any partner to be doing (writing suggestive messages on cups of customers they find attractive) Asking for trouble imo
lilkiosk 2 points 1y ago
Oh I agree - guess that’s a disclaimer I should have mentioned. Wrote this more as an eye roll type thing. I dislike the coworker for it - it’s uncomfortable
Mundane-Ocelot5817 0 points 1y ago
Holy shit, you can problemetize anything. Celebrate whatever you want. STOP bowinf down to the outspoken minority. In fact as soon as you feel you might be doing something people will be against..... that's your que to speak out and follow your heart. This is madness listening to the bleeding hearts, they are hiding behind fake outrage.
Santhat42 -13 points 1y ago

Probably not the best place to make a comment like that after the post mentioned something related to women's rights....
Santhat42 3 points 1y ago
