Insomnia and opening shifts (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by CoffeeChesirecat
How do you handle opening as an insomniac or even just a night owl? I've had several jobs that required me to work into the night or wake up before the sun for, but at Starbucks I've always been a mid. I'm thinking of interviewing for a shift position, which means I would have to get over my past trauma (for lack of better words) of working odd hours, possible clopen shifts, etc. I swear I'm not lazy, I just have bad experiences of working on this sort of schedule before my Starbucks days.

i have two jobs so i often end up having to close and then go in pretty early the next morning (i also have to leave 45 minutes before my shift). i won’t lie, it sucks, and the free caffeine helps a lot. i live about 27 minutes from my store so if there’s not traffic, i usually get there early enough to make my drink and get a little espresso in me before i start going. if i have trouble sleeping at night, weed *always* puts me to sleep, and helps me stay asleep. melatonin has never helped me very much but it’s supposed to do wonders, that’s worth a shot too! and i set a bazillion alarms to make sure i don’t oversleep. i also have adhd so being on time is really hard for me, especially when i have late/early shifts back to back. but it can be done! also, we don’t think you’re lazy! i am amazed at the people that think working so early is easy. sleep is something i cherish greatly (i’ve had sleep issues my entire life) so getting out of bed is no simple feat for me! good luck ❤️

Thanks! It seems like you really understand. I've had sleep issues my whole life too. Melatonin gets me to sleep most of the time, but I always wake up wide awake in the middle of the night for some reason. I forgot about weed. Recreational use was just legalized in my state, and it has helped me in the past. Worth a try again. It's helpful to know others have a system despite things like multiple jobs and adhd. That can't be easy, but it's encouraging to know it's manageable. <3

yeah, i’d be lying if i said i didn’t cry just about waking up sometimes lol. but it pays the bills. i empathize with the random midnight waking up, that’s something i’ve always struggled with too. good luck!

I've developed some pretty bad insomnia the last couple of years (actually was the reason I downloaded Reddit, so I'd stop buying stupid stuff on Amazon when I couldn't sleep😂). Its gotten to the point that I need medication if I want to fall asleep before 3am or 4am. I was using ZzzQuil and Benadryl, but my doctor said the ingredient that makes you sleepy is being shown to give you memory issues when used everyday. So now I have a prescription. I have to make sure I take it and go to bed at a certain time or I won't wake up on time when I'm opening (I have to get up at 3:15 to be at work at 4:15). It also took a couple weeks to get used to and not be groggy the next day. I started only taking it when I didn't work the next day until I could guage how it made me feel. I'm hoping the insomnia is just part of the severe anxiety I've been dealing with and will go away soon, but for now its working and I'm able to go to sleep and get up ok.

Damn. I take benadryl all the time for allergies, now I know 😭

Thanks for your reply. I didn't know that about Benadryl and Zzzquil. Good to know because I gave used them to get to sleep in the past. That was at the height of my sleep issues and anxiety. Just a really stressful point in my life. Starbucks is so much better than the jobs I've had before, so I'm hoping that helps get me up in the mornings too. Good luck with your own insomnia and anxiety. I definitely think the two can be related.
