How long before you felt comfortable on bar? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by rascallytrashbergs
I'm new, been working for about two weeks, and after training basically all of my shifts have been spent almost entirely on register, and sometimes I get to take a break from that and do warming instead. I can do some drinks at this point without help, but basically anything on cold bar is still instantly intimidating. My shift lead keeps on trying to get me in for some practice before having to switch me out because we get a rush and are too short staffed for anyone to really be able to help me through it. That, and today I just. Destroyed myself with whipped cream lol.

I feel like I'm generally doing well so far, but I'm still anxious and looking forward to being more capable of supporting my coworkers.

(also my SM, who everyone loved, was unfairly fired shortly after I was hired and we had four people immediately and rightfully quit in protest, including two shift leads, so, you know, its a real time to be new to something lol)

Roughly 3 months, personally. I didn’t even touch bar for a solid 2 months after my training—which really sucked ass, tbh. I worked nights at the time and the closing shift would try to get me some bar time in, but it was never long enough for me to get comfortable w it on my own.

SM threw me on cafe bar during red cup day…by myself…for the first time. I got through that and I realized I handled it a lot better than I thought I would….even though I remember wishing the ground would swallow me whole.

Functional? About two months. Actually comfortable with decent window times and sequencing? 8 months. It really depends on the person and situation. The more you are on bar the better you will get. Make sure to not stay on bar too long at one time if you can help it though! Wrist problems can develop quickly in less than a year.

It took me nearly a year, but my time at sbux has been a disaster. First they wouldn't put me on bar at all, then we had to close down a ton of times because of covid outbreaks. All in all, it took me nearly a year. Shouldn't take that long for you though imo. Not counting all the time I haven't been on bar, it took me maybe 4-6 months. Just be sure to ask questions when you need to and be sure to show that you want to actively learn instead of having them put you on register/dto all the time.

Honestly it can take months. For me, once I started off on bar, within a week I would be assigned to solo bar and I’d have to tell them “uhhh you sure about putting me on solo? I’ve only done this a week.” And they’d reassure me that I’d be fine and they’d help if it got crazy. Weirdly enough it took me like a month or two? I guess my shift managers saw potential in me for bar and now I’m almost always on bar during my shifts. It’s basically muscle memory, not really memorizing the drinks. You just need to do them enough to do it and ALWAYS ask questions!! If you can’t remember how to make a certain drink, don’t be afraid to ask! I was super anxious at first but I was constantly reassured and reminded to always ask (even a million times if need be). Im sure you’re doing well by far but do not feel bad or overwhelmed, just do your best and it will come to you! Best of luck along the way <3

1 month for not needing to ask questions every drink. 2 months for knowing most drinks. 3 months to be sequencing (2-3 at once). (I also started training). 4 would be making them faster (closer to a min per drink) as well as doing more then one. 5/6 would be when you have it mostly or completely down (speed and doing more then one). It may take you longer to get to “the next level” most people get it in a year or less for being comfortable. (For me 3 months) I’ve seen a lot of partners take 4/5 months or more and that’s 100% okay, just as long as you keep trying
