these hardcore forced customer connections have customers thinking we're buddies. they're coming up to me in my car on my half to chat like tim i'm not getting paid rn i don't want to talk to you 🤚😭
friendlySkeletor141 points1y ago
I stared dead in a customer's eyes and rolled up my window silently once. Best feeling ever.
Brief_Coat652676 points1y ago
I hated when i would come to work early to do homework before my shift and customers would not leave me alone. Even with headphones on they would stand there till i acknowledged them.
idkcassie30 points1y ago
i didn’t dare wear headphones because then they’d have the audacity to *touch me* to get my attention when i was studiously ignoring them.
Brief_Coat652614 points1y ago
Yeah it’s total bull shit because they always start like with “o hey you studying” and then want to make jokes about why I’m not behind the counter
accountedthrowaway576 points1y ago
ain’t no way… during your 30??? wild 😭😭😭
livingfortheliquid69 points1y ago
But you wanna date me right? Because you are friendly. /s
mypoopoosmelly6931 points1y ago
the barista that is being paid to be nice definitely wants to sleep with me wtf 🤯🤯🤯
Comfortable-Plane94454 points1y ago
Lol that’s why most at my store park far enough away people wont see them
Ohyanoforsure6 points1y ago
Hands down. I park at the back of the parking lot and sit on my backseat slumped down because I’m not having it. Leave me the f*ck alone.
cats_with_tentacles40 points1y ago
Had a customer see me out in public and ask me to fix his iphone.......... bro??? I am a barista?? And not at work???
Ristrettosharts28 points1y ago
My coworker deadass had an older regular of ours get into the passenger seat of her car while she was about to leave to talk about a MUSIC FESTIVAL I cannot believe it
BatWeary16 points1y ago
i’d literally throw hands. nice barista no more.
donald-lover23 points1y ago
As a customer, I hate the new forced connection conversations at the window. It makes me so uncomfortable and it’s inappropriate. I stopped for a coffee on the way to visit my bf in prison a couple weeks ago and the barista casually asks, “where ya headed?” Peoples lives are private!!

it's not necessarily new, but a lot of stores have been put under extra pressure to force the "third place" feel for Starbucks - we're being told each week about how we should be focusing on connecting with customers, getting to know them, etc. before I worked at Starbucks, I always hated when they'd go out of their way to ask questions and ended up being pretty short with them (hopefully not in a rude way, but I'm from the northeast so sometimes it can be received that way LOL). i hate how we're meant to be so involved and "in-peoples'-faces" just to try to get a good score at the end of the week.
starbucks is a fast-food coffee chain that is desperately clinging to the idea that it can still pull off the small cafe vibe while pulling the shortest service times possible... baristas jobs are basically: connect with the customer on a personal level, but also make sure they've been served within 30 seconds of arriving on Starbucks property
cookiemonstah878 points1y ago
Is it just me, or is the ability to recognize and respond appropriately to "don't talk to me" body language part of connecting with other people?
When I'm working front-end, I can't help but see the "make it snappy, I'm in a hurry" or "please don't talk to me more than is absolutely necessary for me to place my order" body language and I honestly can't force myself to try to connect anywhere beyond just making sure their order is correct as I enter it. I've been told off by my shift for not asking about their days, but as a customer, I honestly hate the artificial "connection" crap, so I'm not about to force it on people who clearly don't want to be bothered.
daisiesanddaffodils5 points1y ago
I'm with you. No amount of threats from the SM could make me try to chat up the irate looking people who clearly just wanted to be in and out. Sometimes providing the best service means providing the service the customer actually wants, not assuming everyone wants to be treated like a toddler on the first day of pre-k.
Bob_Geldofs_Eyebrows4 points1y ago
When I pull up to the window I say Hi! I’m Bob I'm a Pisces And I like chihuahuas and Chinese noodles
geminavis4 points1y ago
i’m so glad i work at a store that doesn’t care about connections/doesn’t force us. i think the best thing to do is read the situation, it’s not too hard to see if someone wants to talk or not! it’s annoying and uncomfortable for both the customer and the barista
faakthisshit3 points1y ago
SAME! Typically it’s no talkie talkie before coffee and fuck off my day is ballz right now!

petrifying

One time, a guy came in being kinda weird. I'm talking looking around a lot, being obviously nervous about stuff, and walking the perimeter of the lobby. We had never seen him before but had to be nice because money. It was late enough that no one else was in the cafe, but there was still some time before we closed. We didn't say anything. Just watched him in case he decided to be a problem.
Anyways, I'm close to the end of my shift and there isn't much to do, so I am near front wiping stuff down. He comes up and starts talking about houses in the area and property, which was a little odd but like...whatever. I just politely tell him that I don't really know and that he can check online. He mentioned that he was traveling in his car and was interested in buying property. Again, I let him know that there are websites for that. I take his order, and he goes and walks around the lobby until his drink is done.
When he gets his drink, he starts talking to me again and will not leave me or my now GF alone. I have a bit of a break from him when I clock out, but as soon as I get back out there to get a drink before leaving, he is at it again. Now talking about weirdly personal stuff that could be taken in a sexual way if you squint. When I have ordered my drink and am waiting at the counter for it, he asks me if I want to see him sometime. I just very bluntly tell him that I am gay. He talks about being disappointed but says he figured I was??? And then he starts to grill me about being gay and how maybe I'm not. I ended up staying until it was time to close cause I didn't want my now GF up front alone with this creep and knew the other two were busy with closing tasks in BOH.
Some customers are a whole piece of work.

nah the way i'd probably write an incident report about this - he made you uncomfortable even on and off the clock. my store has recently gotten into the habit of making incident reports of anything and everything (nothing absolutely ridiculous, but something like this would absolutely have been reported, especially because something like \~75%+ of the partners at my store (including myself) identify with the lgbtqia+ community)

bruh this shit happened to me too i wanted to scream but i felt forced to smile and chat bc i was still in my apron

Coming from a medium-ish town of about 100,000 people and working at the second most popular of four locations, it basically made me feel like almost like a celebrity. I swear I couldn’t go anywhere without being recognized by someone to the point where my friends literally timed how long it took before someone recognized me. The record was 15 minutes.
cookiemonstah876 points1y ago
I'm so glad towns are close enough together here that despite only being a 10 minute commute, I don't live in the town I work in, and I don't spend any time in that town aside from the occasional grocery trip before heading home. I've never seen a customer out and about, and I'm convinced they wouldn't recognize me without my hat and apron, anyway
n2bxl3 points1y ago
LMAO for me it was always the question of “are they staring because they’re not sure it’s me or do they just like me?”
galaxydisco173 points1y ago
That's how I feel in my town aswell.
beeleanza7 points1y ago
We have one that is so 'comfortable' that he will try to walk behind the counter to talk to us- and I'm the only one that is like you're too fn close man
RubySapphireSage6 points1y ago
Yes , how rude do you have to be to disturb someone on their UNPAID BREAK 😭. Yes I’m gone be the one to say it leave me df alone
fluffyfunfetti4 points1y ago
The worst is when they hold up the line and talk their mouths off to you nonstop and expect you to answer back while you’re busy trying to take their order and make their drink
Caramelcedlatte2 points1y ago
Yessss….. that’s so annoying
rlogranite-54 points1y ago
Be nice to your customers, and they'll tip you better.

I am always 110% sweet and I only ever get maybe $3 in tips max a day (not that I take that home. We split the sum of a week amongst everyone which I assume is protocol). And our entire district has a shortage of venti cold cups, so just imagine how that’s been going. (It won’t be resolved for the rest of the week, most likely, and people are like 75% understanding, but people who aren’t will ruin your entire morning)
